I've read some reviews about Menaul that were negative. While I can't speak about the school now, I…read morecan only speak about how it was when I attended from 82-86. I found my voice here. Class sizes were small. We didn't have iPads or computers given to students. I had great teachers. Appreciated dedication of teachers, some I am friends with today. I learned strong work ethic. Appreciated all the kids that left home and lived in the dorms. I didn't. We had mini weeks that were educational. Choir took us to AZ where we sang in Presbyterian churches and stayed with host families. We were the school cleaning crew. Back when I first started going to school there, I worked on campus in the summer to earn money for my tuition to help my parents. Because classes were small, many of my friends are from when I attended there. Many return for homecoming. Many are still involved on the board or alumni committees. We're a family. I'm so grateful for everything I experienced and learned there.

I did not attend Menaul School; nor have any of my children. But, having said that, I still believe…read morethat I have an outsiders' perspective of the school's history and a general educational outlook for students attending Menaul School. What makes me even slightly knowledgeable about Menaul School? My viewpoint comes from working in the Menaul Historical Library of the Southwest, which is housed on the Menaul School campus. In that capacity i have met a number of very successful adults who have attended and graduated from Menaul School. I have read the extensive history of the school (opened in 1896). I have watched the students - both local and international, both day students and boarding students. I have read the school's written history and what this educational institution has accomplished in presenting well-educated, interesting and capable adults to communities around the world. We need more schools that are capable of educating well-rounded contributors to our world. Menaul School is a school that does. Menaul School is a co-educational, college preparatory day and boarding school for grades 6-12. If you are looking for a small, but excellent educational opportunity for your children, don't hesitate to put Menaul School on your research list. (www.MenaulSchool.com) Come visit the campus; meet the staff and instructors; walk this beautiful campus in the heart of the Land of Enchantment. The best future opportunities for your children lie in a great education - they will get that at Menaul School.

I have a young, gifted child who is not in a gifted program. Teachers cannot understand him, and…read morethe work he gets at school is absolutely insufficient in every way. Kumon makes him more of an independent learner, and lets him work at whatever level he is at. If he's lost or confused, there is help, he can go back, he can change direction of what he is studying with Kumon and then return to his problem area when he is ready. We have been there about 1.5 years. Susan Howell is the owner of the franchise and is not only a wonderful person, but is very hands on with what is going on. Most of the people working there are very good. We haven't had a problem except when my son was adjusting to the program - which took a few months. We have done both Math and Language Arts, and are currently only enrolled in Math due to time constraints. Susan is always willing to work with a family in whatever way will help the child, which is her main concern. When we arrive, the kids are usually focused, quiet, but generally happy. I don't see melt-downs or sad faces. I think that the crew is optimistic and positive in their interactions with the children, and it shows in their attitudes. Don't get me wrong - teaching discipline with young children is sort of an upward climb. But the folks at Mrs. Howell's Kumon treat discipline and good work with nothing but praise. I have not observed any problem or any hard sales of anything. I would say that the biggest problem we have encountered is with my son's giftedness, in that too much repetition is not really the best for most gifted children. However, Mrs. Howell is ready to accommodate to individualize the program for the child, and in our case, we are fortunate to benefit from her experiences as the mother of gifted children. Thank goodness we have a positive, educational choice with some truly professional people in Albuquerque!

The math program that APS adopted was not sufficient in developing numerical fluency, and Kumon has supplemented this need beautifully. My daughter is gifted in cognition and critical thinking, but her math calculation achievement test scores were average. I am so glad that my mother (a veteran teacher) suggested we start Kumon to scaffold her learning. She has managed to do well on curricular / district / state testing; and most importantly, she has confidence when solving math problems. On a personal note, Susan and her team are so very kind and patient with my family. Over the past three years, they have allowed us to go on hiatus while taking a long family trip, as well as cater how many pages we do a week depending how busy / hectic our lives are. Susan is extremely responsive to all my questions and emails. I am always saying how grateful we are to her! This evening my daughter had to stay late finishing up a test, and they couldn't have been kinder to us. I am so glad Albuquerque has this beneficial resource in our community.

I will say prior to my son…read moreattending this place we had the worst experience with the public school preschool program and special education classroom. At the previous school my child was hit by a teacher and we created an investigation. So I wanted my child to be in an educational system in which I could have access to video monitoring services and one that held teachers accountable. So I as any parents of a little one I was skeptical of every place that I went to observe and I ended liking kiddie academy because of their philosophy, rules, and how they hold teachers accountable. My child has a few couples of days getting used to his new school and he did bite a child one day and got suspended. However in no time he learned to get a long with the rest of the children and be friends with children. I saw my child grow as the little butterfly he is and be confident in his social skills and educational journey. He was able to graduate from pre-K with his peers and do the summer program as well. He loved it so much that me that he is in kinder he tells me he misses Kiddie academy friends and teachers. The team is amazing and wonderful and I will forever be grateful they took care of my little one as one of theirs.

Despite the multiple discussions with management and staff, my 2 year old son continued to be bitten. The management had an attitude of "kids will be kids" and not an attitude of how to make sure he and the other children were not bitten. One or two bites may be a toddler behavior but not 32. The lack of care, or plan put in place was the reason we had to disenroll. It was not fair to my son to go to school everyday in that type of environment. The only reason I didn't give it one star was because there were a couple teachers I liked at the school.

ca. 630 BC the Assyrian King Ashurbanipal became indeed the most powerful ruler the world had seen…read moreuntil that age. Before him, rulers such as Sargon the great (Akkadian), Gilgamesh (Sumerian), and even Hammurabi (Babylonian), although having conquered more land, and having done it before him, couldn't even come close to his greatness. The reason - he became the first ruler of an empire to recognized the value in learning how to read and write. He fell so in love with acquiring knowledge, so much in love with the written word, he decided to collect copies of all the clay tablets around the known world - an impossible and insurmountable task, but one the benefits of which still impact us today, for his was the idea, in his megalomania and in all his power, of building one of the first (and greatest up until then) libraries in the world - the Library of Nineveh. Today, we are not emperors, kings, or queens, but we hold equal, if not more, power, as Ashurbanipal understood it. Power does not reside in arms, and armies, or in brute strength; power resides in the mind. True power resides in knowledge - for a man, or woman, can move armies with just words. A man, or a woman, can change history by enlightening people's minds with his/her acquired wisdom. Following the great tradition of the library of Nineveh, or the great library of Alexandria, the Zimmerman library at UNM offers a gateway to pure, unadulterated wisdom. I particularly become fond of its Center for Southwestern Research archives collection. Here, not only will you find documents that retrace the history of the region since before the arrival of the first Europeans to the new world, but also more contemporary elements, elements you're probably reading about in class, or would just love to touch and hold in your hands. While doing research for a film I'm working on, I got to touch a 500 year old Spanish book of records with the genealogical information for the first village Founded by free and escaped African Slaves in the new world (in Mexico), a village probably founded before the birth of The United States itself. I got to touch and analyze the records of a store clerk that sold items to the Confederacy, as well as letters, the actual letters, by Coretta Scott King, the honorable Elijah Mohammed, Rev. Ralph Abernathy, Rachel Welch, and many others historical figures we only read about or watch in movies. The items in their collection are priceless. They are items that should be housed in a museum - and eventually will be - in the mean time, if you're a student at UNM or just someone like me, traveling from place to place while working, make a stop at the Zimmerman library a priority. As a matter of fact, if you visit New Mexico for it's history whether Anasazi, Pueblo, Spanish, or Western, and you don't visit the Zimmerman archives, you're doing yourself a disservice. Additionally, Samuel, Chris, Nancy, Marnie, and the many other archivist working there are some of the most amazing most knowledgeable people you'll meet in New Mexico. They have incredible passion for what they do and are more than willing to help you with and accommodate any request - I can truly say, out of all the great times I've had in 5 months I've spent in New Mexico, I've had the best times researching the UNM archives at the Zimmerman library thanks to them.
