We'd passed the pub a number of times before while out walking but yesterday decided to stop for a drink and something to eat. We had a hot salt beef sandwich (a pub speciality) and poached fish of the day. Both meals were good. I also had a pint of Hobgoblin ale (not great, but drinkable) and a second pint, of London Pride (very good). The staff were very polite, friendly and helpful. What I particularly liked about the King and Tinker was that it hadn't been modernised or made to seem fancy (the dreaded 'country pub & dining'). It was just how typical country pubs used to be, with photos and pictures of local interest on the wall, regulars sitting at the bar chatting with each other and the staff, and no piped music playing. It seemed like it was more or less the same as it would have been 30 or 40 years ago, except for the fact it offers a full food menu, which many pubs didn't in those days. We enjoyed our visit so much we made a note to come back again when out walking in the area.

The mustard to go with the chips hit harder than a pimps slap. The chicken sandwich my friend got was good. Chicken very crispy and joined with chips. I went with Gammon steak with peas and chips and it was a good pick. Then to close it up we went with several pudding options and tea to cap off a great meal. It is situated right on the edge of the forest, on the eastern side of Waltham Abbey, and offers a large number of different ales and ciders, as well as an extensive menu of mostly pub-style meals (burgers, roasts, fish and chips etc.). I had Captain Bob ale (locally brewed) and it was excellent. My wife had Woodbine Racer (also local) and that was very good, too. We then had our meals (fish and chips, and a burger), which were reasonably priced, especially in consideration of the quality and generously sized portions. It was noticeable that the staff were very helpful, even offering to bring more drinks to us, rather than have us go up to the bar ourselves. The bar manager (or possibly landlord) also took time to tell us about some of the ales and ciders they had on offer. The pub itself is a characterful 19th-century building that has been nicely refurbished, and there is outdoor seating available. Perhaps the one thing that was a slight disappointment is the fact that the pub, which I had imagined as being in a quieter location, faces a rather busy road, with traffic racing by almost constantly. But there's nothing that can be done about that, and overall this is a great pub that I will certainly be visiting again some time, when out walking in this part of Epping Forest.

I was shocked, and pleasantly surprised on a recent visit, to see that the old pub had been demolished and replaced by a very nice building. I am supposing that the Health and Safety squad got in there. The garden, at the rear, overlooks wonderful fields and woodland. Great on a warm evening sitting out there with a pint, or two, of McMullens real ale. The pub is in the middle of Epping Forest and can be hard to find. It is worth the look. One funny thing, which hasn't changed over the years, is a large tank full of water with a chain hanging into the water. On the tank is a sign saying 'Beware of the water otter'. Needless to say, kids have to see this otter and pull up the chain. On the end is a kettle LOL.

I had vegetables au gratin - broccoli, carrots, aubergines (eggplant to my american friends), bell peppers and onions, drowning in a rich cheese sauce topped with breadcrumbs. Heaven in a bowl!! There was a lovely salad on the side along with a generous portion of coleslaw. There's a nice selection of homemade desserts as well, which seem to change every week.
