I called a scheduled appointment for a blonde balayage and haircut.
I was quoted around $168 to start.
When I arrived the stylist, Eryn, told me that she could do blonde but that it would be messy due to the fact I had natural root regrowth, a few splotchy patches of previous brown box dye that didn't get fully removed when I used a color lifting box (no bleach or ammonia) 2 months before.
I agreed that the condition of my hair needed color correction, so when the stylist suggested that we do full brown color to blend my roots and mid length of my hair along with a partial blonde balayage, plus a treatment for my hair because of hard water. I agreed to go along with the plan and the $329 cost because I thought that was reasonable for the number of things she would be doing.
The major problem was that my partial blonde balayage was grey when I turned around and the brown color, she was way darker than expected.
I was shocked and was polite to my stylist when she asked if I liked it, I said yeah, I mean I'm guessing the grey color will hopefully wash out due to the hard water I have at home.
I was hopeful that with some time, the grey color would just go away, so I tried not to react right away.
When I got home, I bawled my eyes out, I couldn't believe I got talked into $329 and came home with grey streaks of hair and red brown roots.
I called the next morning and asked for the stylist to try again because my hair was grey, I didn't like it, and it was way too much money to not be happy with it.
Eryn said she would talk to her manager and let me know. She got off the phone and the manger, Janet, called me back maybe an hour and a half later.
She told me that Eryn told her I didn't bring in a reference photo, which I did.
She called me a gas lighter and told me to look it up.
I was astonished by the way she spoke to me. I remained as calm as I could because all I wanted was for this "$329" hair to be somewhat better.
I asked if she could just add in a few more areas of brighter blonde to help get it closer to what I wanted.
Janet said she refused to put blonde in my hair because, in her opinion, it was too damaged, and she wouldn't risk my hair falling out.
I told I didn't think my hair would because it's only had two things done to it in the last 2 years.
I told her I didn't really have the $329 to do my hair this way but that I trusted them to give me blonde amidst the brown they said they had to do, BUT IT WAS GREY!! I asked if she wouldn't fix it if she would at least do a partial refund of the extra money, I originally didn't plan on spending there for something like this.
She told me it was my choice to spend that much money and it's not her problem what my financial situation was. She said she had mouths to feed, and so did her stylist.
I asked if she'd be willing to fix my hair in several weeks after my hair had time to rest. She said that I would never be able to do blonde in my hair unless I waited 4 to 5 years for it to grow out natural.
I asked what she was willing to do if she's not willing to do blonde. She told me she could do darker, tone it again, or tone it more gold.
None of this is what I wanted, and she knew that. I asked if she could just fix the grey color in my hair. She said if I could be at her store in 30 minutes and that she didn't have time to take me any other time.
I got myself and my son in the car and drove to get from Willmar to New London in under 30 mins in hopes that she'd see my hair, get a look at it, and to be kind enough to admit it was really bad color wise.
She looked at my grey hair and said it wasn't grey. She asked me what I washed my hair with that morning, and I said my Nexxus shampoo. She said that's why my hair is grey because of the shampoo I used and that I shouldn't have washed it for at least 3 days after the color.
I showed her my inspiration photo that I showed her other stylist, and she tried to tell me that all the blonde balayage pictures of Pinterest were A.I. created and not possible.
I let her put a toner on my hair, wash, and blow dry it.
Having it toned, just washed, or both did make the hair look a little bit better, but it is still hideous in my opinion for the cost it was, and the way I ended up being treated.
This is speculation, but I think Janet has enough of her own clients and is tired of fixing her other stylist work.
She said herself that she doesn't care whether or not I'm unsatisfied and leave a bad review.
