Thayer has been my management company for 10 years and they have been responsive and responsible. I live in a 100+ condo unit association in 100+ year old buildings and there's a lot to deal with in terms of maintenance and safety. Someone is always mad about something (I'm reading some of these other reviews) but I think some tenants and owners forget or don't care that there are hundreds of other owners and residents whose needs and wishes may be different. Overall Thayer does a good job of enforcing rules and making sure things that need fixing get fixed. They have surveyed owners (most don't respond apparently) and I haven't had any issues with management personalities but I also don't break rules, get fined or act like I own the entire building. I'd recommend them. read more

Since 2016, Thayer & Associates has been my management company, and I'm so glad! They have provided a welcome contrast to our previous management company. I've been a long-time owner-occupant in an old, multi-building condo complex that needs ongoing work. This is not just my investment but my home, and I have seen a great improvement to our property since Thayer took over. Our Portfolio Manager is responsive, patient, and level-headed. He has consistently guided our property through important capital improvements that were long overdue. He takes owners' needs into consideration and tries to reduce costs while balancing that with the long-term needs of the buildings. He works to communicate and explain large upcoming projects to all unit owners so that we can plan accordingly. Based on my experience, I can recommend Thayer & Associates. read more

This is an illegal practice. Avoid at all costs as a tenant and property owner. They tried to raise the rent 40% with under two weeks' notice, which is illegal in Mass (not to mention the myriad of illegal construction practices happening in our building that's dangerous to workers and tenants). Instead of responding to emails, calls, visits, and negotiating, they went to court, and their lawyer (who didn't even know what case she was pushing) literally got laughed at by the court for how blatantly in the wrong her side was. Embarrassing! It cost them tens of thousands of dollars of missed rent (as the court found we were entitled to that) and legal fees, and was such an icky experience for us. Hands down, the most incompetent and irresponsible people I've ever had the displeasure of having to come across. Edit to the response: Well folks, another example of Thayer's unprofessionalism on full display. Violating building's rules and community standards that compromised the safety of other residents? Such a blatant lie... and the first I'm hearing of it (not to mention the building didn't even have community standards). Such fiction. Really no clue what this man is talking about, but that would be a record response time from Thayer! Buddy boy, you should work on communicating with your clients this promptly (they take weeks to respond to anything, and they literally couldn't even find a full version of their own lease for us to sign for months). I'm sure you'd have less horrible reviews that way, and then you could take that time to actually try to do your job. We beat you in court once for your abusive practices (all very well documented). Do you need us to take you back there and beat you again over this slander? The compromised safety would be when your construction (done with several violations of city ordinances) causes carbon monoxide leaks over triggering four excavations and visits from the fire department. Or how about that time one exit was shuddered due to a construction project, then that same week a 5'x5'x5' foot pit was dug in front of the doorway to the only other exit, so we had to buy a plank of wood so we could enter/exit our unit? That's what is unsafe. Interesting how this man immediately disparages everyone who leaves a review with an attempted character assassination. Absolutely no accountability and no integrity. But with Thayer, that is their MO for everything they do. Take your business elsewhere, people. Jeez, what a bully and a menace! read more

The person you hired to do the plumbing work on the sprinkler system components in front of my unit left my stairs and walkway a complete mess this afternoon. This is unacceptable. I'm currently sending you close to $700 a month and you hire people that are incapable of cleaning up the mess they made in front of my front stairs and walkway? Totally unacceptable. Update 4/13/2021. 24 hours later and you still haven't sent anyone to clean up the disgusting mess your plumber left on my walkway and stairs. Next step will be to contact Maura Healey's office again. read more

If you want a property manager who talks about his ideas but refused to conduct a survey to know what the owners think. If you want a property manager who focused on big projects because he gets a percentage and ignores small projects. I wish I had found these postings before buying my condo under Thayer management. It's been a nightmare dealing with them since my purchase almost 3 months ago, I've had the unfortunate experience of running into all the issues that I'm reading here: - non-responsive communication (SLOW response to email and no call back EVER on phone messages); - no back-up other than the 1 person you're supposed to deal with (who takes ages to get back to you); - liars: even after you get through to the person and get a "promise" that he would look at it, you don't get back anything for days or until you call again - extremely rude and bordering discriminatory behavior; - incompetent and unprofessional property management team They make you feel like they have complete control over you and you are too afraid to make waves so you can get what you need. It amazes me that such a company can continue to operate like this. Thanks to Jen S for posting a link for complaints to Institute of Real Estate Management (although some folks in this firm sit in high positions of the local Boston and New England chapters of this Institute). Their website boasts recent awards such as Portfolio Manager of the Year, Manager of the Year, and Certified Property Manager of the Year. My experience so far has been completely contrary to what these awards convey/imply. read more

Totally useless property management. I smelled gas in our laundry room, so I reported to the "manager" Norman Gopin. Sounding irritated that I called, he told me that he has nothing to do with it and I should call the gas company myself. When the gas company called to reiterate what I had already told him he thanked them and said he would try to get somebody out the following day to look at it. Norman has also in the past sent threatening email to all residents regarding the disposal of garbage at the dumpster, assuming that it was somebody who lives here. The turnover of property managers for us through Thayer and Associates has be a revolving door in the last 3 years, and we have yet to have any sort of pleasant interaction with any of there reps. Mr. Gopin could use a few training classes in IPC skills as he does not really know how to speak to people. read more

I wish zero stars was an option because 1 would be too generous. Don't let their website fool you; they absolutely do not ensure or prioritize the highest quality living experience for their "customers". I quote "customers" because Thayer & Associates treats you as though they manage you, even when you are the owner of your property and pay a mortgage and condo dues. You have an issue in your unit/building? Don't bothering calling them, they will intentionally ignore you until you go away. Those condo dues you pay each month? Who knows what those are put towards since their buildings are not cleanly by any means. If you're thinking of buying at a property they manage, run. read more

The management lady can't reply my email in the timely fashion, did not return the phone call when I left the voice mail and refuse to see me when I walked into the office on Mass Ave. The reception lady told me to book an appointment. I told her, how can I make an appointment with someone that does not reply email (for a week) and does not return the phone call. It is after numerous persistent phone calls that she decided to pick up the phone. All I need is to ask her one simple question. I also asked to speak to the back up or the manager who should be able to help me, and then, the reply is that there is no such thing; the lady is the only one. OMG, this is super rediculous. So, if the lady decides to resign, then, no one knows would know how to handle the business. I was in complete frustration. read more

Thayer has managed my condo building for many years apparently well, but I was very disappointed with their recent handling of a personnel issue. In brief, they dismissed an apparently well-liked employee and provided no details in response to multiple residents' questions regarding the cause for dismissal. Thayer claimed that potential legal liability prevented them from disclosing any details, but this claim was not convincing to several residents nor substantiated by a professional legal opinion. It would be unfair to assign full blame to Thayer for lack of transparency, as my condo association's trustees are equally culpable. With all due respect to another Yelp post regarding Thayer, my building is very clean, very quiet, and staffed by very nice people. Our superintendent is very capable and effective (but he was here before Thayer took over our building). If you are considering Thayer, I would recommend talking to residents at several properties that they manage, examining any variations in management structure at the different sites that might account for radically different outcomes, and getting clear documentation on what their policies and responsibilities are with respect to basic issues like personnel management and accountability to residents. I have lived in my condo for some time now and I feel like all of the issues we had before Thayer & Associates took management over have been taken care of very timely and non-disrubtive. I have emailed their office once or twice and received an email back very quickly with an answer and an estimated date of when my problem would be resolved. The contractors brought onto our property have been respectful and diligent. (unlike others before from our old management company) A maintenance worker even helped me get something out of my car with no hesitation when he saw me struggling! Now that's something! I would def. say I have had no issues with them since they have been working with my building and it's been over 2 years. read more

If you ever have a chance to rent or purchase a unit managed by this company, I have one word for you! DON'T!!!!! The people at Thayer are rude, uncooperative and border on the illegal! I've had problems with this firm before but, just recently, I've had an experience with one of their property managers which hit a new, all time, low! Kirsten's her name and pain is her game! I rented an apartment managed by Thayer & Associates for a little over a year. The property was well-maintained and I had no problems with responsiveness when I had something needing fixing or questions. My interactions were always polite and timely. WORST EVER, horrible management! Thayer manages condos where we live. We are very disappointed with the firm and staff. The handling of multiple issues confirms consistent disrespect of owners' rights and lack of focus on owner / customer service. Their primary concern was mostly financial and legal - i.e. how to protect their own interests and push costs of any issues or damage to the owners. Thayer & Associates (Thayer) has managed my condominium for many years & they are an organization of competent, professional staff...from the property managers to the accountants, to the on-site maintenance personnel. Some of the negative posts on this website are suprising & don't seem representative at all - I suspect some people are taking out personal issues on Thayer...possibly based on the enforcement of condo rules & regulations or Board decisions, that Thayer had no control over and had to enforce because that's their job. If you choose Thayer your property management company, you will find that they are reliable, knowledgeable, and there when you need them. They have their phone number posted in every building of my complex because the want residents to call them about any problems or questions. They respond REALLY quickly to urgent/emergency calls, at any time of day (in the evening they have an answering service take your calls and notify them of an emergency, even if it's 1am). And I've found that for non-urgent questions, they typically respond within 48hrs which is reasonable. Thayer is also great about advising the condo board & allowing the Board to be as involved or un-involved as they want to be in managing the condo. Thayer leverages their years worth of experiences with contractors to the benefit of any property...it's really helpful to have a property manager sharing their knowledge with Board members so that the Board can make decisions that are in the best interest of all residents at the property. Most people living in a condo managed by Thayer have no idea how much work they do "behind the scenes" to make your condo run smoothly. In my time on the Board of my condo, I've worked with many of Thayer's staff and had good experiences. We even had one property manager donate some spare plants from her own yard for us to plant on our condo grounds - that's just above & beyond! There's not much more you can ask for from a property management company...they do their job well, they're pleasant to deal with and they're actually good people too. read more
