You will find this mural on the side of AJ's Lounge, which touts itself as the oldest African American lounge. It overlooks the businesses private parking lot, so parking to get a closer look is relatively easy under normal circumstances. However, there is some massive road construction going on in front of the lounge, making it difficult to get to. I had to park a couple of blocks away and walk.
This mural is the work of artist Linette Bledsoe, who painted the piece in 2013. It is in pretty good shape, especially considering its age. It depicts a man who is wearing a sunglasses and hat, while playing the trumpet. The figure is set against a gray background. He has orange, blue, and black waves coming from the trumpet in a whimsical fashion.
It is a simple mural and is very nice on the eyes. It is very detailed and I really like the shading that Bledsoe uses. The mural's theme is fitting for this lounge because it is well known to host live jazz/trumpet performers.
Anyway, as with most murals that I have visited and reviewed, this is not a long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. So, you may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other attractions in the area, or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip. read more
