I've been keen to try this place for awhile but I'm not always in Milford but today was the day! Sushi Milford has a number of different hot meals & sides, as well as their sushi, which can also be ordered as platters if you need an event catered. My first impression was a very well presented, clean and airy shop with cute plants & ornaments throughout. There is bench seating by the window and a couple of tables outside and magazines to keep you occupied while you wait. Upon entering, I was greeted by a very cheery girl whom promptly took my order & thanked me. I arrived back within ten minutes after picking up a prescription and my meal was packed and ready to go. I had the salmon sashimi donburi ($14) and the presentation was exactly as the photo suggested on the wall. A good amount of veggies and fresh succulent sashimi on top of delicately flavoured sushi rice (I ordered non spicy so I could share with my little one). I would have rated them 5 stars but there was an over abundance of sliced red onion on my don and more importantly, they use the little packets of wasabi instead of mixing it fresh themselves. Their sushi in the cabinet looked very tempting with an assortment of options, standard flavour combinations and their own varieties. Not the cheapest for sushi but the value of their donburi bowls definitely compensate for their sushi prices, in my own opinion anyways.

We picked up dinner here the other night: small family takeaway set, teriyaki chicken option. The…read moreflavours were superb; the chicken itself was especially good. On the tray were spring rolls, gyoza, deep-fried prawns (shrimp? I'm one of those hillbillies that never knows the difference), sticky rice and delicious teriyaki chicken. There was also a pack of sushi (6 pieces I think) on the side, as well as a small salad with dressing. At $29 it struck me as a tad on the expensive side, as the amount of food wasn't stupendous... but then again sushi is generally an expensive option, relative to what you get.

We were looking for a place to eat on the way out of Auckland. It's been awhile since I've had…read moreMalaysian and I'm always a sucker for a good laksa. A quick search brought up Gu Xiang Malaysian Restaurant. It's in a random small strip mall that also has a few restaurants and a Eastern Fresh grocery store. We dropped in on a Wednesday (around noon) for lunch. The place has plenty of tables and it was about half full. Completely full of Asian clientele. The servers speak Cantonese and English. Service is good here; just catch the waitress attention and you can get refills on your tea and water. The menu is massive; appetizers, noodles, noodle soup, fried rice, nasi lemak, dishes on rice, pork/beef, chicken, tofu, fish (market price), prawns, squid, vegetables (seasonal price) and others. All the meat and vegetable dishes are very pricey. - 2x Roti canai (#116) ($3.00 NZD each) - thought these come with a curry sauce dip but nope. You just get the roti canai. These were greasy but had some sweet tones to it that I wasn't expecting. Order this with the chicken curry ($12.90 NZD) instead. - Loo mai gai (#9) ($5.00 NZD) - this was pretty glutinous and had a thick, sweet oyster like sauce. We were intrigued by the photo of it on the wall. Just average. - Curry laksa with chicken curry (#21A) ($13.90 NZD) - the broth was creamy but not very spicy. I'm pretty picky with my laksa; this was better than I expected it to be. They throw in two types of noodles (thin vermicelli and yellow lo mein), tofu puffs and bean sprouts. Get it! - Seafood noodle (#20C) ($11.80 NZD) - the broth is sweet and tasted like wonton soup broth. You get yellow noodles, mix of seafood, bok choy and bean sprouts. Definitely a Chinese influenced dish. Pretty mediocre, nothing special in my books. - Hainese chicken on rice (#31) ($11.80 NZD) - the chicken was hot and tender. Came with delicious side of rice, a vegetable soup and chili garlic sauce. Simple but satisfying. Stick with the Malaysian dishes. Good portion sizes. 3.5 stars.

Great chicken laksa, very authentic Malaysian food for the soul together with the rest of the menu.read more

There were a lot of choices for soups. They also had many spices and sides to add to your food. I wouldn't say the portion sizes were the best but enough to fill you up for sure. Aroy is a Thai eatery that opened recently in Ponsonby. Located on Ponsonby Road, it is sure to be a hit - especially with such delicious, well priced food on the menu! Chicken with oyster sauce stir fry and a side of rice only costs $12 and the portions are huge. I had it for lunch one day when I was starving and it still managed to beat me. Luckily this just meant could have the leftovers for dinner! Two meals for the price of one - bonus. The staff at Aroy are all incredibly well spoken and friendly, and are happy to take phone orders to ensure your meal is steaming hot and ready when you come to collect it.

Here they have both doner kebabs and kebabs on rice (my favourite) as well as charcoal burgers (beef, chicken and vegetarian) and a kids menu. If you choose to dine in Charcoal Burger also have the option to have an alcohol beverage with your meal. This I have never done as I have always taken my meal away, however the number of times I have driven past they have always been busy. There is both street parking and parking behind the store available for customers. It is located in a rather awkward position though. They are on the main road right by the lights, so the entrance is quite hidden beside the store and a set or terrace houses. I think this place is a good quick meal option if you're in the area, however I wouldn't come out of my way to dine at this take out joint.
