Thai Noodle house was a low-key Thai restaurants in Merimbula. Being the only Thai in town, I was a little worried the food would be merely mediocre (with no local competition to keep them honest). But I was pleasantly surprised to find that the food was actually quite good; and the prices were also very reasonable for the area.
The place seems mis-named. They did offer Thai noodle dishes, but they also offered a wide selection of Thai rice-based dishes and curries; they even had a few Chinese dishes. I tried the following:
-- Panang chicken curry: A thin sauce but very fresh and tasty; chicken and veggies were cooked perfectly. Spicier than expected and a large portion
-- Pumpkin curry with prawns: (Off the specials board) Delicious and hearty; the pumpkin was just slightly al dente, which was ideal for me. A large portion again. Definitely a repeat order, even though the sauce was also thinner than I am used to.
Thai Noodle house doesn't have a liquor license, but they do allow you to bring your own in. (Conveniently there is a liquor store about 50 meters away.) Strangely, Thai Noodle charged us an extra $3 fee per person for this privilege (So let me get this straight - I get charged a beer "corkage" fee? even though I bought and opened my beer myself?.. and they didn't offer alternatives we could buy in the restaurant? I don't get it).
Our service here was also a little strange. Our waitress treated us oddly; almost like we were asylum escapees. She kept giving us weird looks and treated us with kid gloves. I have no idea why; our group was large but polite (if slightly boisterous).
If I had had more time in Merimbula, I would have liked to visit Thai Noodle House a few more times to sample more of their broad menu. The food was good enough that my nits were easily forgiven. read more
