My meal was really tasty and tasted very authentic. The tofu was also very good! I also had the Thai tea which was delicious. The restaurant itself is really nicely decorated and the service was fast. We made a reservation to sit at one of the Thai Tables, even though there is a hole underneath to put your legs through so it isn't really a traditional "sit-on-the-floor" type of situation. The only complaint I have is that meal sizes are a bit too small for the price. I don't have the largest appetite in the world but I still left feeling not 100% full. But maybe that's just because my meal was good and I wanted more of it

FOOD: If you've been in Thailand already, this place is a direct ticket back ther. If you haven´t, it is the perfect occassion to start diving into the culture. Portions are good and the quality of the food and taste reaches the expectations. I try a different dish every single time but I highly recommend the Pad Ka Prao with chicken. TIP: Pump it up by asking for an fried egg on top! PLACE: This is not a romantic place or area, so don´t plan your 1 year anniversary here. But it is the perfect place to have a quick lunch if you live or work in the area. Sabai Jai is my number 1 lunch place during work days. It is a restaurant for such occassions and not really for nights out or special events (bear that in mind). There is also a lot of parking available all the time and an Ubahn stop minutes if not seconds away. The restaurant is also very traditional, just watch out for little thai traditions here and there. SERVICE: I am still not sure about how friendly the staff is, but then again my expectations are pretty low in Germany. Somehow I feel they are always off in space instead of focusing 100% on the customer and a smile here and there would do no harm. However this is part of the whole experience at this restaurant. So - follow the stars of yelp and get surprised. To me Hoang Mai is one the most authentic Vietnamese restaurants in Hamburg. Uuuugh, its ugly here. First problem - the door is closed. In general you enter the restaurant via the shop beside. Hey if you solved this problem, the spartan interior and green walls may make you think "am I right here". YES YOU ARE!!! The waitress suddenly turned up, presented the menu. Asked If we are in first time. Explained all options of the menu (in really perfect German). Some of the food is vegetarian, but can be ordered with broth. In this case, broth is made of bones - no longer vegetarian at all. Good to now but anyway - bone broth, sounds really good! YOU ARE RIGHT HERE!!! Because most of the people here are Asians. One more point to assume the food is authentic! YOU ARE RIGHT HERE!!! Because the taste is mmmmmmmm really incredible. But don't let that stop you from treating yourself to the most authentic and delicious vietnamese food you'll ever get this far away from Hanoi. And boy are you in for a treat. The food is amazing! Flavourful with a home cooked vibe to the dishes, served with fresh and fragrant herbs, spicy chilies and refreshing drinks. Satisfaction guaranteed! The service is efficient, friendly and accommodating. I once turned up with a friend of mine minutes after closing and they still served us and where so nice to us, even though we stalled their much deserved closing time. Thank you once again! The decor used to be typical to Asian Street Food restaurants (very basic) but they changed all that and redid the restaurant. Purists, regulars and people in the know may shrug off the redesign but I think its great. Hopefully people whom are not accustomed to asian Street Food won't be dissuaded by the backroom flair any longer. The little trip to Jenfeld is time well spent. As a tip, get there on a saturday or sunday morning. The place is bursting with people from all walks of life. Asian families dressed to the nines, groups of young people looking a little hung over from last night, old wrinkly asians all busy chatting away and most likely me, taking the whole scenery in, slurping my jumbo Pho and just being content. Food are traditional Thai staples, all executed in high quality, and at decent value. Delicious! BTW when they say spicy, they don't mean Thailand-spicy, which is senible, but if that's what you are after, be sure to tell them. Good little selection of wines, too. As of June 2023, the set menus didn't seem to offer much additional value, you might be better off ordering a la carte as we did. Liked it a lot, deserves more traffic as probably the second Thai restaurant to be taken seriously in Hamburg, now.
