I lived in Canada for five years, and one of my weekly guilty pleasures during my first winter there, was takeout Thai Express. Pretty much every Sunday that it dropped below -20 was a Thai Express night. To say that I'm overjoyed that it's come to London is a vast understatement. Even though this branch is closed on weekends, the fact that after moving across an ocean I still live within their delivery radius makes me giddy.
Now, don't get me wrong. Thai Express is not high-end Thai. I'm not even sure, in the grand scale of things, that it classes as good Thai. BUT it is the ultimate fast-food, take-out, cardboard-carton expression of North American Thai, and I think they know that. They even had an ad campaign once about how it's pretty addictive, and it's true. It really is. It's your favourite quick and cheap burger joint, not the Gourmet Burger Kitchen, and now it's over here, and I love it.
My order is normally spicy Pad Sew Beef with extra egg and peanuts (at the bar), or Red Curry Chicken, or if I've had a particularly crappy week General Thai Curry. The latter is a completely Canadian invention, and it's basically small battered pieces of chicken in curry sauce on rice. That sounds not great, but let me tell you, it is entirely great. Especially when it's so cold outside you're in fear of losing a nipple. Thai Express is kind of junk food, but if you need to put on an extra layer for comfort and to beat the winter, you can't do much better.
Pro-tip: If you're vegan, don't waste your time here- head up to the vegan Thai place in Boxpark, which is very much a solid equivalent, is where I was going before this place opened up, and arguably has better Pad Thai. read more
