From the outside the place is inviting with even a sign by the entrance. The decor was very eclectic. I was immediately greeted and seated. While waiting for my friend I was served water. It was lunch hour (until 3pm) so all dishes offered on the lunch menu is $12.99. I ordered the Massamun curry. First, the portion size served wasn't as pictured in the menu. The curry visually had disproportionate protein/veggies ratio to curry broth where it seemed like they served the last serving of the pot with only a few veggies, 3 cubes of potatoes. The peanuts should have been slightly blanched as they were too hard/raw. The beef slices were dry and tough. The rice was very dry, not fluffy and tasted like it was a day old. Must have been an off day but considering the drive from VA Beach plus my friend and I were eyeing and wanting to try this place for some time now, it was subpar to our expectations and what other reviews reflected.
Sam served us and was absolutely so welcoming and kind! I can't believe it was the first time I had ever gone in here. I feel like I have been missing out. The food was delicious. The portions were big. I loved the home-y feel inside. I loved the recommendations that Sam gave us to try and the spices he brought out. He explained everything and with context of his childhood home back in Thailand. It felt very warm, very VIP, and the food really was delicious.
1st time ordering here, but I didn't eat inside; Maybe next time. I got the duck curry, which to me was bomb. I really like the Thai tea too. I would recommend level 1 spice to start out though if you never tried it.
I can see why parents are regulars here! My family stopped in here earlier today to celebrate my mother's birthday, and it was a great choice. The noodle dishes are exceptional. In addition, our server was focused and friendly, making sure to provide us with water refills frequently (which was especially appreciated given my slight overconfidence in terms of spiciness level). Finally after telling her it was my mother's birthday, she came out with a fried banana dessert! Here are some of the flavors I got a good taste of: Pad See Ew (Chicken) - 4.5/5 - Delectable. I loved the addition of carrots to this dish, and the thin cut made the flavor a perfect garnish. The spiciness was not very evenly distributed throughout this dish though, making each bite a bit unpredictable. Fried Bananas with Honey - 5/5 - A chilled banana interior enclosed in a warm, flaky dough. Maybe the best thing I've ever tasted. I will be ordering this every time we come in the future. Excited for our next trip to Portsmouth!
So it's date night and we choose. Thai Basil. Not very busy but it's early on a Friday night. The service is really nice and friendly. We ordered an appetizer of pot stickers. Very tasty. Good job. Needed a little help so we added some spice. I ordered a medium heat pad Thai with chicken. Ok medium is pretty good intensity. I love spicy and this is just about close to all I want. Delicious flavor and a lot of food. My wife ordered pineapple fried rice with no spice. Delicious flavor. We mixed them together and it calmed the spice down and was incredible. This place is great. We will be back. We saw a lot on the menu to try for next time. We ordered Thai iced teas. Oh yeah.

The staff is nice and made me laugh, felt like being served by aunties. Ordered: veggie eggrolls: crunchy, perfectly fried, veggies could use some more seasoning, dipping sauce was sweet and tangy pad gra pao: was thinly sliced and not ground as advertised, the flavor tasted more like garlic with brown gravy panang curry: big portion of curry, soup was a little thin but had good portion of chicken and veg, hot and spicy as advertised lard nah: the wide rice noodles were old, as evidenced by the dry texture and broken appearance of the noodles and were not as flavorful as they could be. Overall this place was okay. It serves up traditional American Thai foods as well as fun seasonal dishes.
Delicious food, good service and a variety of options. I come here everytime I visit my cousin and his family who lives down the street from here and who regularly come here on the weekly basis. I look forward to coming again.

We grabbed food to go so I can only comment on the food itself. We got chicken basil fried rice and chicken pad thai. Our order took quite some time to be prepped despite the restaurant being nearly empty. It sounded like there was some confusion with the online orders so that might've just been a one time thing. I thought the food itself was decent, but nothing extravagant. I've had basil fried rice plenty of times before but the one I ordered here didn't taste a lot like basil. It tasted more like Thai fried rice. The pad Thai noodles were also cut extremely short which I've never seen done before. The portion sizes were great though- one serving was enough for 2 meals!
First time in, but masaman curry was YUMMY!!! I got Level 1 with chicken. By the end, my nose was running. I need to learn to make this. I need moar!! Nice staff, too.

I was almost done eating when I looked down from my computer to see this roach in my food. I immediately spit out whatever I had in my mouth. This is absolutely disgusting. This was my first time trying Thai Basil and I will definitely not be back.
Lovely restaurant on High Street. Very friendly and efficient service and a warm welcome from owner, Mel, who has decades of experience in the hospitality industry around the world. She is attentive to every detail. Excellent menu selections made from freshest ingredients. The lunch specials are impossible to beat: complementary hot and sour soup and generous portions for a very reasonable price. Summer roll appetizer was beautiful and delicious, too.
Stopped by on a rainy day to have my Thai fix. Their food was ok. Everything was spicy as warned on the menu and the server. Orders came out quickly also. The green curry not pictured was very watery and hardly had any meat inside. The salad I ordered was the highlight. My dining companion had the fried tofu for appetizers that disappeared in 5 seconds. I am presuming it was decent. Parking can be challenging but can be found on the street. Interior is nicely decorated for a date night out of sorts. I wouldn't go out of my way to return as there are other establishments nearby with better flavored food. read more
Cute place! But food had no flavor. Chicken was tough and extremely dry in my Panang curry. The rice that came with it looked and tasted like it was old, I had to scrape the top because there was an odd grayish texture on top. I have the picture of the rice before I scraped it off, but feel bad posting it on Yelp. The panang curry was watery. Staff member was friendly . Parking was fine. Gosh, I was really excited about this place, I've been wanting to try Thai Basil for years, but I'm not in Portsmouth much. Sad. read more

I tried real hard to contact the owner to explain my concern but no luck so I will have to make a negative review even that i am usually don't give a bad review to any restaurant.I felt like they took advantage of me maybe the service was busy preparing to go home even that I went an hour before they close. After living in Hampton Roads for 8 months, we had yet to order Thai Food! Went through Uber Eats to have Thai Basil delivered, after I found it had relatively good ratings compared to other options in the area. I started off with the shrimp summer rolls to accompany my chicken and rice soup, whereas my fiancé ordered the Dan Dan noodles and a Thai iced tea. Thank goodness we had the iced tea - both of us ordered our dishes spicy, and it was beyond anything our palates could handle. The Drunken noodles weren't as oily as other restaurants, which I appreciated, but between that and the soup, our mouths were numb upon first bite. It was rather an unpleasant experience, and we're unfortunately too afraid to dig into our leftovers. That being said, I wish the restaurant would offer levels of spice, since the food was fresh and flavorful (or what I could enjoy of it). read more

Went to Portsmouth with two friends for lunch with the intention of one restaurant and then we saw Thai Basil and decided to try somewhere new. And, we were all so happy that we did! The Crab Rangoon appetizer was delicious. I really enjoyed the dipping sauce that came with it. And, they were fried just right! I ordered the Cashew Chicken Spicy and it was spiced just right! My friends really enjoyed their Drunken Noodle with Chicken, too! The ambiance is awesome, too, from the flower straws to the extra napkins folded in a glass for presentation! The staff were friendly, social, and funny, as well! Oh, and the chicken soup that came with the meal was yummy, too! Prices are reasonable, too, at $9.95 for the lunch menu items. Try it! read more

I ordered from grubhub and the food was amazing. Delivery is always sketch but everything was hot and cooked perfectly. I ordered Pad Woon Sen which I always order so many fresh veggies with a hint of ginger, phenomenal. I also got fried bananas which are a favorite of mine. We ordered take out $60. worth the food. We did enjoy our appetizers. The dinners were probably really good but it was too hot (spicy) to eat. The option was 0-4 for hotness we chose 1 HOLY CRAP!! I can't imagine it any hotter we couldn't even eat any of the meals. It's a real shame it looked great too bad! So then today I called Thai Basil 1st the girl was rude she said there wasn't anyone in charge there at this time n she didn't know when she would be in n she was too busy taking an order to take my name. I'm just shaking my head this is crazy. That's how this place operates so I'm not sure we would try again. Thank you for your time. read more

I had been meaning to stop in this place for months. Was actually on my way to another place but they were closed on Christmas Eve so we ended up here. Once we arrived we were immediately greeted and sat. It was only two other parities so it was pretty empty. Great ambiance very pretty decor. We ordered our food immediately and it came out quickly. The crab rangoon were some of the best that I have tasted but I thought the price was steel for the size of them. I would have thought 8 pieces would have been better since they were so small. The pad thai and drunken noodles were a great value for the money. The portion sizes were big. The food was amazing. Very fresh tasting. We will definitely be back. Plus they are on all the food delivery sites so takeout is an option read more

Ordered Drunken Noodle take out. They say good things come in small packages but, for middle of the road drunken noodle, this portion size was way too small. There was such little food in the box that I feel like it must have been an over-site by the chef or half of my drunken noodle is somewhere on the kitchen floor. Anyway, for $13 I am left hungry. Flavor was pretty decent. 6.4 out of 10 by portsmouth VA food standards. read more
Amazing tasting food. We went at lunch -seated quickly. We ordered summer rolls, spring rolls, and I got the drunken noodles with chicken and tofu. The food came out super fresh and hot. The noodles were cooked perfectly, and since this was out first time I started with level 2 spice out of 5 - it was super mild. It was weird that entrees didn't come out at the same time, but it gave my dish time to cool down and finish our appetizers. The ladies that served us were super sweet and nice. Great to see this addition to downtown Portsmouth. read more

This is one of my favorite Thai restaurants in Portsmouth. They have an amazing chicken pad Thai and drunken noodles. The staff there are SO friendly and they are very quick with making their food as well.
