Gah! What's everyone's beef with the toll authority? When I went, things were smooth sailing. I do…read moreresent having to pay tolls in general, but these guys made it easy. Their cameras and toll tags seem to do all the work. As long as things go well, they seem to go very well, but when they go bad, they go horrid. I was driving at the speed limit, and getting passed like I was standing still. Speed limits seem to be a mere suggestion along most of the toll road. Houston drivers know better than that. If you're paying to use the roads, I guess you can drive it like you stole it. Some of them probably did. My favorite thing about the Harris County Toll Roads is the cars - when you see the dropped lowrider with the spoke rims that stick way out and the fur on the inside of the car jammin' some DJ Screw while sippin' on some syzzurp, you know you rollin' Clutch City.

I recently received an unexpected invoice from the Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA) for…read morenearly $500. When I contacted their team, I was told that invoices are not sent until a "significant" amount has accrued, and that there is no guaranteed notification cadence-- by email or by mail--on a regular basis. They verified over the phone that they had not sent me a single notice since 2022. This means that drivers can unknowingly rack up toll charges for months or even years without receiving any notice until a large balance suddenly appears. In my case, I had not received a single invoice or late notice since 2022. Then, out of nowhere, I was sent a $500 bill with less than 30 days to pay it. Every other Texas toll authority and basic service provider that I pay on a regular basis--utilities, rent, even smaller toll systems--has a simple notification system. HCTRA's lack of one makes it extremely difficult for people to pay their bills on time and puts customers at risk without fair warning. This practice feels outdated, poorly managed, and unfair to the public. HCTRA should be required to send toll notifications regularly--monthly, quarterly, or at the very least, when a balance first appears. They told me I could have "checked their website at any time" but they just officially took over as the operators of TXTag this year. How was I supposed to guess where to go and when to pay my bill? Seems unethical and like a bad choice of a company to operate our toll roads.

I set up auto billing on a credit card. After the first bill I see an $8 service charge. I try and…read morelog in to change it and am unable to enter and receive this message "Access to www.houstonwaterbills.houstontx.gov was denied. You don't have authorization to view this page." I verified it was the correct site and tried again. Same result. I went to chat and asked to change payment method. After 7 minutes of verification they said I they could not change payment method and said to call the main number for help. I called and said I wanted to change payment method. Again, after all kinds of verification I was told I had to change it online. After trying several times with the agent online I was told the site was down and to try back later. I guess when you are the only game in town then customer service really does not matter.

Another day, another boil notice from the City of Houston. Yet again, the City of Houston has…read moredropped the ball, and can't provide Texas' largest city with clean, safe drinking water. Apparently the pumping station had a power failure (thanks Ercot) and then the backup generator failed. Nobody seemed to notice until it was too late, and water pressures went below a safe threshold. Remember during Snowvid in 2021, Valentine's Day, Winter Storm Uri, when they couldn't keep the taps flowing? Yea, that sucked, and people died. Remember in 2020 when a pipe burst, and they had a boil notice for the entire city back then too? Get your act together. The trust that the public has in your water utility is going down the drain. I'd drill a private well in my backyard if they'd let me, but I don't think that's feasible. In the mean time, we're going to the store to get more bottled water, and boiling everything that comes out of the tap.
