Tesco Filling Station

Just outside the centre of town and next to the large Tesco store, lies this filling station. It…read morehas about 12 pumps and has one of the cheapest petrol prices in the area. The queues into here can be massive which affects the rest of the traffic nearby. Several times I've had to abandon hope and drive on! (It hasn't helped lately that several pumps have been closed.) Like other typical garage they also sell a limited range of other goods, but you're better off going across the other side of the road to the main Tesco store if you need to get anything. There is also an automated car wash. The staff are friendly and other than the queues I've no problems using this filling station.

However they are attached to quite a large convenience store which carries a good range of items, (there is some parking available if you are just buying from the shop rather than getting petrol). They also have the added bonus of a Post Office which is definitely a lot more convenient than having to use the one in town. There is also a cash machine, which is a definite plus. It's always a busy place.

Go
Welcome to the future! Forget queueing up at the pumps or the cash registers to pay for your fuel,…read morejust go to Go! If you haven't been to one of these garages yet you're missing a trick! The fuel is as cheap as any of the other garages out there and you can be in and out in 5 minutes, plus it's 24 hour! The reason I used this service was because the other garage I go to was closed as it was after 11pm. The self service machines are easy to operate and while you're filling up your car the touch screen monitor plays a video explaining where your fuel was sourced from and how it got to you. I actually found this interesting - turns out Go provide the fuel for all of norther Ireland's buses and train so it must be good. There's loads of pumps so you won't have to wait and as previously stated the fuel is exactly the same price as the high street rivals (Tesco's, Asda etc). I can't think of a reason not to give Go five stars!

You can choose from Greggs bakery, The farmers market, Chopstix, Burger King, Subway or Lavazza. I recently ate at Chopstix and found the dishes were pretty soggy with congealed sauce around the honey pepper chicken I ordered. I definitely wouldn't eat from it again in a hurry. I went upstairs to Lavazza and had a coffee after and this was much better. Lavazza has a really strong unique roast which always hits the spot when running low on energy. This Applegreen has some nice picnic tables outside and a mini kids play area. Theres also a large parking area for lorries and larger transportation.

It is definitely not the nicest or stock the best food or groceries, or even offer the best services. But if you lived in east Belfast I cant think of a filling station that is better value. You'll find it has most of the goodies, drinks, household items and magazines that you would expect it to have. In the past they have had a couple of thefts in the shop from some youths with nothing better to do and at the counter where you pay they have some pictures taken form CCTV footage of youths stealing. I used to enjoy jokingly enquiring every week how the investigation was progressing!!! At the end of the day, most of us need petrol. For me I like to pay as little as I can when i fill up.

It was en route to work at the time and seemed to have the best prices. A couple of years down the line it still has the best fuel prices and remains very busy. Likewise shop part is unchanging, just a limited selection of food and household items. You can always get a pint of milk in this one, but most certainly not anything healthy like fresh fruit or vegetables, but really, that's fair enough for a filling station first and foremost.

Fresh made stew, lasagne, pasta bakes you name it they have it all very cheap. My personal favourite is the hot chicken baguette a large sub filled with sliced southern fried Chicken breast and all the salad that will fit in only £3.50 and prepared in front of you fresh. Also worth mentioning is the coffee from the machine inside is decent, freshly ground beans and only £1.50. The ideal spot for a quick cheap lunch on the road.

The other two are Maxol stations with modern Spar stores joint on whereas this garage is a little bit old school, with a smaller more personal local shop attached. There are six pumps here selling unleaded and diesel, they also have a vacum service as well as an air machine for altering the pressure in your car - the air machine takes coins (20p) so there's no need for tokens or to even go in to the shop if you wish to use this service. The shop is paypoint friendly meaning you can top up your gas and electric here - they also serve a small selection of hot pastries and everything else you'd expect from a local corner shop. There's often great food deals on - the counter next to the checkout has the best bargains. The staff are fantastic here, always ready for a chat and generally pretty chirpy! It's next door to a chippy and a chemist too! No ATM at this garage but they are okay about using card for smaller transactions! Needs modernised slightly but does the job just fine!
