A lot of the corner shops in Cathays have historically stocked a very limited range of non-premium brands at fairly expensive prices - knowing full well that most students don't have their own transport and aren't willing to walk a long way to do supermarket shops. Tesco Express, however, was probably a shock to their system - giving many local shopkeepers a bit of an incentive to lower their prices and really think about what their customers want. So while few people want to see Tesco push out local shops, it has probably made them offer a better and more competitive service. This Tesco is inevitably very popular, not only with local student residents but also with workers in the area at lunchtimes, so it gets really heaving at times. It's often difficult to park outside, and inside the queues often snake right down the middle of the shop.

Right, so talk about THIS Tesco: The main problem with this place is how busy it gets. The middle aisle is impossible to shop in during busy times because that it where the queue stretches down. I recommend doing the first and third aisles first then joining the queue and shopping as you queue. It's sneaky but it'll save you time! My favourite thing about this otherwise generic store is that the man who served me was basically ignoring me. That sounds weird, doesn't it? But he was ignoring me because he was having a little flirt with the server next to him, and it was the cutest thing. I will keep coming back to see this story unfold.

It stocks bread, milk as well as other essentials and also has a good range of magazines. The staff are polite and helpful and the store is usually quite quiet although you can expect the occasional que at the post office. Prices of diesel and petrol here are a little above what you would pay in town so it is worth noting this if you are filling up.

Convenient for the M4 and A470 and not usually a queue. Inside the shop there's a good range of those emergency sorts of breads and milks and sweets that will save you actually attacking ASDA. There's a car wash (never been in there - isn't that what rain's for?) and air for your tyres. I love the usual staff in here, sometimes I wonder if they affect some different wacky personality for each customer to avoid boredom.

Despite the name of business, they do the full range of car repairs and servicing here. They also do MOTS. It's a family run business, and the service is faultless. I would have no hesitation in recommending them. I have never felt that they were ripping me off or taking advantage because I'm a woman!
