And I like old-school. Very reminiscent of Stewart's (they were the days), Green's has a little line of retro tills just as you walk through the door. Beyond this are aisles upon aisles of every kind of food you'd expect to find in a grocery store. Some of the stock is slightly different to what you'd find in Tesco etc. - they had rather a lot of Scottish biscuits and shortbread for example. Nice. The highlight of my visit was the pic n mix section, and this was really old-school. More old-school than I initially realised. Having selected my sweets and lumped them all in one of the plastic bags provided, I headed towards the till and set the bag down. "Oooh, they need weighed love", said the shop assistant, and marched off towards the pic n mix section, with my sister and I hot on her heels. "Sorry, I didn't realise!", I explained, but she wasn't fazed in the slightest. She placed the bag on a set of scales (yes...remember those?! They even gave you a little sticker to put on your items), and headed back to the till. I apologised once again, saying I hadn't realised that the shop was quite so nostalgic, but she just laughed and said, "Ah, this is Green's after all!". I appreciated that. Rummaging through my purse, I produced three pound coins, ready for her to inform me of the price. "£1.64 love" came the unexpected statement. 'Sweet!' (in more ways than one) thought I...it was a heavy bag, and I was prepared to pay quite a bit more. It really was the icing on the cake, so to speak. Happy days...until *someone* ate all my pic n mix, that is. Grrrr. Just means I'll have to pop back someday...

Green's is somewhere I have always walked past in Lisburn, but not gone into, until recently…read more It is a proper wee old fashioned convenience store, something that you literally never see anymore. A thought flashed through my head for a second, wondering how in the world they would get any business, what with the huge Teso superstore in Lisburn, until I took a good look around, the place was absolutely packed. Then I took a closer look. The prices were very, very competitive. I don't know how they do it, but it's a brilliant thing, to see a shop like this nowadays, and not just some generic supermarket. It doesn't look that big from the front, but it's like a tardis inside, with lots of aisles and even a coffee shop in there! There is a huge pick and mix section (I resisted temptation with all my willpower!) and lots of brands you wouldn't often see in the supermarket, including lots of household names, all stacked neatly, with labels facing the front, with great care. I will never bypass this wee shop again!

Although it isn't as big or with as wide a range as the Lisburn store, it still has pretty much everything you could need. The store is always clean and tidy and the shelves well stocked. It offers a wide variety of frozen food as well as general groceries such as bread and cheese. The prices are very reasonable especially the own brand range which also offers very good portion sizes. It has great special offers on a regular basis and if your shop total comes to over a certain amount they will deliver it to your home at a convenient time. The store is well laid out and the staff are helpful.

And so far, the shop is yet to cement itself into the N.I shopping calender. Perhaps it is that there are only a handful of stores around the country, or perhaps it has something to do with an unearthed national hatred of Sainsbury's partron and all round healthy Jamie Oliver. Nevertheless, it is not a regular grocery visit for many people. This I cannot really understand. The store is huge. Both it and B&Q are considered the "anchor tents" or the big major shops to non-building folks. Yet any time I've been here, this store always seems strangely quiet. Tescos, Asda and even to an extent M&S have found themselves embraced by the NI shopping fanatics, yet this store always seems to be trying to beg people to come in, and very few do. This is nothing to do with the store itself. It is s terrific spot for shopping. The food is great, particularly the fresh meat and the staff are always more than obliging to help you. Although the prices are a smidgen above the prices of Tescos or Asda, it is a very nice shop to be in and the restaurant that they have is always well stocked and the food is as good as you are going to get for a restaurant in a shop. The clothing end is fashionable and the cds and dvds are all up-to-date and occassionally very cheap. I think Sainsbury's has quite a long way to go before people really trust it and accept it over Tesco or Asda. Poundland has only come to NI a year or two ago and people have really taken to it. Perhaps no-one will ever take to Sainsbury's. I can't really work out why, but I'm going to blame Jamie Oliver.

The fact that it's about 15-20 minutes outside of the city centre means that it's only really people passing on the motorway that would stop in for a shop, or people living nearby. The store offers a huuuuge deal of selection. I dropped in with some friends recently as we had driven up from Dundalk to acquire the makings of some mojito cocktails and some scrumptious food for dinner. It was very handy for us coming off the motorway and there were miles of parking spaces available. The staff were friendly and helpful too, no complaints there. This store also stock clothing and homewares. An epic store for it's sheer size.

I'm a fan of their vegetarian foods and Sainsbury's own brand items (love Sainsbury's Nut Cutlets and veggie mince). They have the best labelling of all the supermarkets with all their own brand products clearly labelled as to whether or not they are vegetarian or BUAV approved (not tested on animals). In addition their brand match scheme ensures you don't pay more with Sainsbury's than with another supermarket. As per Sainsbury's website "When you buy ten or more different products, we'll tot up the comparable brands in your basket. If you could have paid less at Asda - even because of the deal - we'll give you a coupon for the difference off your next shop." I always use my brand match vouchers at my next Sainsbury's grocery shop. Plus their wine selection is superior to all other supermarket selections. Quality store with unbeatable prices, pleasant to browse and lovely, helpful staff. Perfect. At Christmas and New Year Sainsbury's have a special range of fabulous food you can order and collect in store, I would especially recommend the: *Three nut roast with cranberry sauce *Butternut & mushroom en croute *Limoncello buche de Noel If you want indulgent, treat foods try Sainsbury's 'Taste The Difference' range. The supermarket has all the stuff you would expect and more, and is a good place to get all your weekly shop done. They have a very large fruit and veg section, complete with salad bar if you are that way inclined, with a very large delicatessen meat and cheese counter. The store also has a large range of magazines, books, CDs, DVDs and games, and is always worth a check for a better price if you are about to buy a recently released item from HMV. As for the rest of the store there is a large range of everything as you would expect. The store has its own cafe which is good for pacifying those who have been dragged along or those who have worked up a hunger in their arduous shopping trip! The store also has installed self scanning machines, which is a real boost to customers as they can get in and for a few items much faster than in the past! Crowded at lunchtime on a weekday, we managed to nab a table when another couple finished their meal. It's super busy and inside, it's full of gourmet delights. Anyone who thinks Northern Ireland doesn't have good good needs to come here. Smoked salmon on toasted bread, hard Irish cheese, crunchy baguette, sliced turkey, even chilli sauce and something called "black butter." Oh, and wine. You can't have a midday snack without wine, right? Much/most of the food here is quite local (the wine is Spanish) and the staff are helpful. Check the "sandwich board" out front for specials. An Italian section with lots of varieties of pastas and sauces. Cookies from Italy and limoncello! There is a very small Mexican section, which in my opinion was pretty darn good for being in Ireland! They had tortillas, various dry chilies and hot sauces. Lots of cookies, candies, jams and jelly's and a very large tea selection. The cheese case and deli were loaded with so many choices, it was hard to choose! You can order food and eat at tables that are just outside the front of the store. A definite recommend but if you're a foodie, be prepared to be dazzled!
