Nice opening hours and a rather swell alcohol section for all your house parties !

Walkden Town Centre (formerly known as The Ellesmere Centre, but many places still use the outdated…read morename, probably down to habits) is the main shopping centre serving Walkden town centre, while it isn't the largest of shopping centres, it does have the largest Tesco Extra store in the UK, this does take up the big bulk of the shopping centre, at least the indoor part anyway. I think the name change was to add the outdoor part of the shopping centre too. There is a lot of car parking, the indoor area is unusual in the sense that instead of escalators, they use travellators, I much prefer these as they are more accessible for all, and look better too. Public transport links to the centre are OK, I do find it annoying that the 36 and 37 buses which are both on the Manchester to Bolton route, which calls here, actually call at different stands at different ends of the shopping centre, I do think having a small bus station would be easier, as it means having to go to one specific bus stop, rather than being able to wait at the same stop for multiple services. Stores located here include Marks and Spencer, Aldi, Poundland, Pets at Home and Boots, there is also a small number of banks and a Post Office. Food retailers located here include Subway, Nando's and Domino's. 3* - Not too bad, it is nice for a small town like Walkden, the lower floor on the inside part of the mall does seem to be pretty empty as many retailers have moved to the outside retail park area or the main road.

Tesco was completely rebuilt and revamped - though it does feel very clinical and a bit like the Hive out of resident evil at night... It's already attracted new custom - Costa Coffee - which is great! They seem to be doing fairly well too. There are always people inside and hopefully this will inspire more custom from other businesses too. The banks have moved and now have very shiny new spaces; HSBC, Lloyds, Halifax, Santander. The market hall is also revamped with a bigger and better area. There's a good selection of stalls from handbags, to a card shop, to a clothes shop, to a fancy dress shop, to a Polish food stall, to a pet items stall AND best of all.... the old school sweet shop! However, it does cost 10p or 20p to go to the toilet but they are well looked after! He found them on there, but apparently there weren't any in store, he checked a number of flavours, but to no avail, it then came up "No Location" which Keith explained they may be a new product that just hasn't arrived at Tesco yet,. Although I was unable to purchase my "Perkier Bars" I just wanted to say a big THANK YOU to Keith, he is a credit to your store, and shows what customer service is all about.

I've been to many many asda's and unfortunately this is probably the worst I've ever visited. The…read morelayout is not very intuitive and at times is very messy and disjointed. the staff are not very approachable and their product knowledge is actually quite dire. If you need help you have to track down and pin down a member of staff and even then they'll probably abandon you for longer then necessary. The stock levels are often inadequate and unpredictable. The checkout is slow and you don't often get any help with your packing etc. The toilets have dire lighting which is supposed to deter anti-social behavior when in fact it just makes it very unpleasant for the non anti-social customers and they often stink too. The baby changing room is stagnant and smelly and if occupied you're advised to breastfeed your child in the ladies loos! Also note this branch of Asda has no cafe facilities.

By now we all know exactly what to expect from Lidl. This store is located slightly away from the…read morecentre of Bolton and also its retail parks, meaning that it's not mega busy and actually quite quiet during the day. Which is good for me because I find doing the weekly shop a tiny bit stressful. Just like all the other Lidl stores, there are loads of discounts all over the place and more sweets and chocolate than you could ever possibly want to eat. I always find the packing area at these supermarkets quite stressful. There's not enough space for all your items and you generally, to avoid a making a scene, have to throw the items straight back in the trolley without packing them. It's all quiet annoying really. It's like the staff were desperate to get me through the till quickly despite the fact I was the only customer in the store?! Hmph.

The selection in most areas is fine, and I do like the fact they have Amazon Lockers here which is the one big plus compared to Sainsbury's across the way. The central location makes it easy to access from Bolton town centre, as it is a stone's throw away from the train station and nearby retail park, access as a pedestrian can be a little tricky as it means having to walk the whole length of the road outside, it's a shame they haven't made a cut-through which would be easy to do for any reputable construction company. It was a little hard to find staff members on the shop floor, perhaps this is due to ongoing social distancing guidelines due to COVID-19 as I have begun to notice this more often lately, even at other supermarkets. 3* - OK, worth an upgraded rating.

It is also just across the street from Sainsbury's as well as some other stores. So it is fairly central and hard to miss. The traffic in the car park is a bit of a nightmare... taxis waiting, cars not being able to get by because of the awkward shape of some parts of the car park. That is one of the reasons, I can't give the place five stars. However, there is a car park below the store that doesn't seem quite so busy and is great when it is pouring down outside. It is a paid car park... we missed that the first time, but fortunately it was such a quick trip we didn't have to worry about a ticket. Oops. There is a petrol station, which might also be causing some of the traffic problems. There is a covered area where you can wait for a taxi, but it doesn't seem to be large enough. There is an ATM as well. Another complaint I have, the large spinning doors to the store. One of the reasons for parking below the store... not having to put up with the spinning doors! There always seems to be someone who doesn't know how to use it and the whole thing just stops. Not to mention carts and this contraption are just not a good combination. They have a cafe and while it is cheap, I think I would prefer to pick up a snack at the deli or bakery at the back of the store. The store is always super busy and can make a quick shop a bit of a challenge. I do like their bakery and actually think they have some better looking (and tasting) dessert options than some of the other supermarkets in town. I also like their deli... really I like the part next door where they are baking pies, pasties, and sausage rolls. They always have fresh pasties and sausage rolls... sometimes they are still warm! Their pork and cranberry sausage rolls are my favourite! I think their produce area could use a bit of work as sometimes it looks a bit of a mess. I also tend to skip the frozen section. There are usually queues at the tills, but the staff are friendly. There are usually a number of self-checkout machines that are not working, so I usually skip the self-checkout here. Overall, there are some great parts of the store, but I wouldn't consider this for my normal, weekly shops.

They did have some good deals on milk, this wasn't any specific brand but it did seem cheaper than I've found it anywhere else, by some difference too, it was around 27% cheaper here than many nearby retailers at £0.79 for around 2 litres. The store did have a lot of empty space, it did feel clean but it felt more like a pop-up shop than anything, the doors going into the store felt old, unwelcoming and narrow. The big bulk of items were unbranded, there weren't many things worth shouting about other than the milk offer, the staff seemed disinterested and were just standing around near each other with no acknowledgement of customers. 2* - I'd come in here for milk, or perhaps a look around every now and then, but there are many better similar outlets in the area, if you're looking to go in one or even two shops, I'd give this a miss.
