Tesco Express on Chell Street is probably the nearest big-name convenience store to the city centre, other than the large Tesco in Hanley, there's a surprising lack of supermarkets in the area, which meant I had to walk here due to wanting to visit on a Sunday, where bigger stores are required by law to close after a certain time.
The store is fairly modern and still feels new, there is a small parking lot outside.
I came in just to get some milk to take back to my hotel room, I was able to get what I was looking for and find it pretty easily.
The checkout area seemed quite messy and unable to cope with much demand - the shopper ahead of me ended up scanning her items on the self-checkout and walked out without paying. She was not challenged by any staff member or security. This also meant one of the few checkouts they had was out of order, as she had scanned items and there was no staff member on interested in dealing with it so the next customer could use that same checkout again.
There's a small parking lot outside the store and it is served by a bus stop nearby - although services are very irregular.
3* - OK, decent for essentials given the shocking lack of alternatives nearby. The rating is more down to how useful the store is due to a lack of alternatives rather than it being all great. read more
