I'm new to Newport and a temporary resident. I went into the store knowing simply that I wanted a bike to commute on and take off road on the weekends. Dan was very knowledgeable and quickly helped me find the bike for at met my requirements. He also did a great job working within a price range I was comfortable with. Fast forward to my first post-trail ride. I think I got the front brake a little hot, but when I came to ask Dan about checking it out, he looked it over and surfaced the brake pads for free on the spot. Furthermore, following my next outing, Tom, the owner, overheard me talking about wanting to race the bike before they could get my replacement pedals in (I broke one on a rock), and he quickly had Tom, the technician give me a set of good loaner pedals for the race. Today, I picked up my new pedals, and Dan installed them on the spot for free. In closing, I want to say that this shop is top notch and run by a group of knowledgeable folks who ride what they sell, know how to stand by their products, and are always willing to carry on a friendly conversation when you stop in. I've bought a Specialized cruiser and some helmets here. I was surprised their prices are quite competitive with the online outlets, so it's an obvious choice to buy local. Bike and helmets have been great. I also once asked about servicing an old bike, and they were honest with their assessment before doing the work (I ended up not spending the money / time on it). read more

I would have normally gone to a Middletown bike shop, but 4 broken spokes forced me to find a shop closer to home for a new wheel. Ended up okay - price was lower than quoted and service was good. Only issue with 10 Speed is they never seen to have the right parts available. Took 7 days for turnaround. On another occasion, I sought a chain cleaner when they discovered they hadn't reordered any after selling their last one. For a shop that has a lot to begin with, it seemed a little off. Shopping for an electric assist bicycle. I called to see if they were open. The curt response was "we're open". That should have tipped me off. When I went there I was never treated so rudely I believe in my entire life.. I live about a mile away and was walking. On the walk home I met several friends and when I told him of my experience a universal response was: oh my god they're so rude". When I got home I told my wife. Same response "their obnoxious". Apparently they're quite well known. So I'll be shopping in a neighboring town. What a disappointment read more

I used to go here when I was much younger. it was the first bike shop that outfitted me before i took my first solo bike tour around SEAsia. I didn't have a lot of money, and very limited knowledge(then), and ALL the guys here took care of me (it was a diff owner and diff atmosphere. it was terrific). Since then I have lived in plenty of cities and countries where I understand bike and bike shop culture too well. I am a city and touring country cyclist. I love anything bike related. So entering a bike shop should be an experience of welcomeness and kindred spirit (sharing that love-of-bikes)... I went in here a few times to try to find lights during winter and summer, as I only visit here when i visit my family in town. They seem low on things way too often in winter, which is fine. I get it, they are seasonal. Upon many visits i get very mixed reviews from the guys working here. One older gentleman who I later found out was the owner was a little too arrogant for my liking when I tried to find a solution for a lost gift credit voucher. Ok, i get it guy, you run a business, be a little bit more sympathetic and friendly to your customers, particularly when we are locals. I mean your staff tries, but you don't have to be such an indifferent 'tough guy'. The shop guy tries to make it up to us when the owner walked outside, which counted in my book (for the guy, not the owner or store). Needless to say, I won't be going back here. If i need anything I will go to the place on West Broadway, It isn't about the cost, or quality of the items. It is the poor atmosphere this place gives off. I was in town once for a conference, and thought a bike would be the perfect way to see all of the grand old homes sprinkled about. After researching online, I uncovered this shop, saw that they rented bikes and headed over. Upon arrival, I found out that they don't rent bikes in the off season. It didn't say that anywhere on their website, or outline when the "on season" is, so it was a total let down and waste of my time. It still doesn't say anything about it on their site, so if you're in town at a time that may not be peak tourist season, you'll want to call first. read more

I stripped out the threads on the left side of the bottom bracket of my 2000 Specialized Enduro Expert. Mechanic said only solution was to buy a new bike. I said how about new frame and ill put all my components on it? They said your bike is so outdated you would be better off buying a new bike. New bike =$3,000 A friend of mine said go to ________ in Middletown (other shop) .They sold me a "repair bottom bracket" for $35 and I am off riding again. Too bad, I had always made an effort to go to 10 speed spokes and give them business. Shop around first people. read more

Bottom line: the owner is an ornery man who evidently doesn't need more business. First time visiting a bike shop on the island, I just needed to pick up an inner tube. I got inside the doorway and waited patiently while the owner chatted with a regular. I couldn't get by them, but noticed his assistants standing idle waiting for someone to help. I asked (to anyone who could hear), "where can I go for inner tubes." The owner snapped back "Just hold on!" A couple of his assistants stepped up to see if they could help. Thanks, but too late. We were staying nearby to celebrate the 4th of July AND my daughter's 5th birthday. All my daughter wanted was "a bike with pedals" so I did some research and ordered a Woom bike online. While putting the bike together in Newport (the day of her party) I had a very difficult time putting on the pedals. It got to the point where I forced the right pedal onto the left pedal arm (stupid me) and I was afraid I was not going to be able to get it fixed in time for the party. I drove the bike over to Ten Speed Spokes and told them about the situation. The were able to force the right pedal off and put both pedals on properly! I was so relieved! They were happy to help and didn't charge me anything for their effort and I hadn't even bought the bike there. My daughter could not have been more excited when she saw the bike... pedals and all! read more

Ten Speed Spokes is a top notch bicycle shop in Newport. I first went to the shop with a tubeless tire issue, it wouldn't hold air. They attempted to figure out the issue and took time to discuss what they had done, but the problem went unresolved. They called the manufacture and resolved the issue. After the tire issue was resolved they even trued the wheel for me at no charge. My next visit to Ten Speed Spokes was for tools. I had decided to attempt the replacement of my bikes drive components myself. The tools came quickly and the technicians in the shop were helpful with tips and info to make the job easier for me. Once I finished the work myself at home I brought the bike in and asked them to check out my work and adjust the front derailleur. They did so with out hesitation and did it on the spot. I asked how much and they said no charge! They just wanted my business as a customer and I appreciated their excellent assistance. I bring all my friends interested in mountain or road bikes to this shop. Anyone who wants expert advice and friendly helpfull assistance in cycling should visit Ten Speed Spokes! To everyone who had a bad experience there, you should have probably asked to speak with the owner to correct any issues you may have had with his staff. He has always gone out of his way to make sure every customer is fully satisfied with purchases, service and anything else in his shop. I've recently been making the rounds at all the local bike shops. I have found Ten Speed Spokes to have consistently great customer service... the guys that work here are super nice and helpful. My first experience here was when they assembled my Trek beach cruiser. Price was under what other bike stores in the area quoted me for, and turnaround time was about a week. Since then I have been back to purchase a basket, which they installed the hardware for on my bike at no extra charge. I have also rented with them and the process was super easy - we were in and out in just a few minutes... then even had an appropriate bike for the 6'3" boyfriend. This will definitely be my go-to local bike shop. read more

Tom and the team at Ten Speed Spokes were incredibly helpful and knowledgeable when it came time for me to select and purchase a bike. Two weeks into riding the new bike, it started having issues with the front shock. Tom did not hesitate to engage the manufacturer for possible replacement. TSS went above and beyond my expectations to fix the issue in a timely fashion. The environment is very open and friendly. *Yelp would not allow me to give 0 star rating* I live in Newport and was hit by a car riding my bike in the beginning of July. I took it to 10 speed spokes telling them I had been in an accident and needed the bike to be assessed for all damages and repaired. It took them two weeks to put a new front wheel and saddle on the bike. I was told ALL the damages had been assessed and repaired. I was also charged for a $35 dollar "Check over" fee that insured there was no additional damages to the bike. Well guess what? I went to ride the bike and noticed the entire front was off center. I could clearly see the front fork, breaks, and headset were completely bent. I brought the bike back and asked how they did not see this during the "Check over" they performed? They didn't even admit or apologize for lying about the work which was not performed! At this point I would have taking my bike to a different shop however the insurance had already payed for the initial repairs. They took the bike back said it would be fixed and they would order a new front fork that should arrive in a week. I called today a week later and was told the fork is unavailable and they still had not ordered anything??? I went in took my bike after being at this shop for 1 1/2 months and will have it fix at a competent bike shop. The owner did not even apologize for the gross mismanagement and terrible work performed. Not to mention the SAFTY RISK in claiming my bike was road ready when the entire front was still bent!!! Please if you need bike repairs DO NOT bring it to 10 speed spokes. The staff are clearly untrained and not certified to work on bike repairs. In a busy town like Newport RI that has had multiple bike related deaths you think they would take servicing bikes more seriously! Long story short, -Took 1 1/2 months to get bike back which is still not repaired -Charged for "check over" work that was never performed -Safety risk to ride bike when it was claimed to be road ready -Owner showed no apologies for the horrible work and service read more

Don't take your bike here. I brought my bike in for a tune-up and specifically asked them to look at the brakes and tighten them. 2 weeks later, I rode the bike and discovered that the brakes were nonfunctional. I took the bike back for repair. They replaced the cables but did such a crappy job that the brake cable kept sliding out of the brake tunnel. These guys took my money and are incompetent. SUCK. read more

After being totally ignored for about 10 minutes, although I was sometimes waiting just a few feet from him, I left. My husband bought me a beautiful $400.00 bike and one hour after riding it the chain broke... so when I took it back, I realized how horrible the customer service is. They were too cool for school to be nice to me. Except for the adorable young man (about 15 years old) who could not have been nicer to me... he needs to work somewhere else! Excellent mechanics! They know how to keep my road and mountain bike rolling like new and that's saying a lot for the mountain bike. That thing can take a beating. They work hard to find a bike that fits the rider and what the rider wants. Prices may be a little higher than online but its worth it when you consider the knowledge and support that comes with every bike they sell. Beware of busy summer hours since tourists can swamp the staff who are working the shop floor AND the workshop. This can create a bit of a wait since they take time to ensure everyone through the door is treated right. This place is a definite two thumbs up! read more

The bike I got at Ten Speed Spokes was a Trek road bike - clean and in good condition. I've rented bikes in four cities (this being the fourth) and Ten Speed Spoke's day-rate was higher than two of them (in Florida and in California) and lower than one (in Illinois). The bike from Ten Speed came without a flat kit, no computer and no choice of pedals. Those aren't things that are necessary - I still had a great day - but I'm glad I didn't flat and note that the other 3 locations all offered me SPDs or Looks as part of their rental package and the bikes came with basic-function computers and repair kits. (In fairness, when I told the guy at Ten Speed I wanted SPDs he said he could do that depending on how long I wanted to wait.) I took the bike offered with baskets (that kept slipping off my toes). But, here's the kicker, when I brought the bike back I asked what their hourly or partial-day rate was if I wanted the bike again in a couple of days - no such thing. Day rate only! Booooooo... So, bottom line, good quality bike that could be better equipped and day rates only. Next time we're in Newport, if the weather's beautiful, I'll go back to Ten Speed Spokes - as long as I've got all day to ride. read more

My wife and I rented two comfort bicycles (TREK, 7-speed) to ride along the Newport coastline on 10/4/13. Bicycles were not the most expensive or the newest model but well maintained and quite adequate for relatively flat terrain along the coast ("Ocean Drive"). Our leisurely ride (AARP pace) included a quick visit to Fort Adams, 10-minute scenic breather at the Brenton Point State Park and a few gawking stops at mansions. All for ~$15/person @$7/hour rate plus tax for two hours of terrific ride. I would surely revisit this friendly store and go for a longer ride next time. Highly recommended for casual and frugal cyclists/tourists. read more
