Although Reyim means 'friends', this synagogue is anything but. My family was a long-term (over10 years) member of Temple Reyim. However, when our local school district illegally (as ruled by state and federal departments of education) gave confidential information about my minor child to the media, and another Reyim member published that information on her website and falsely claimed I belonged to a racist, anti-Muslim organization, these 'friends' would not do a thing to help us because it was a "personal issue".
The woman who published my child's name, my name, and our address on the website village14.com did so because she did not like my objections to anti-Israel material my child received in her high school history class. As a result, she as well as school administrators decided to 'get back' at me via illegal actions and false claims. Their acts endangered my children's safety, destroyed my professional and personal reputation, and caused untold havoc in my family's lives that we are still dealing with several years later. (In addition to the website, the Newton Tab also published the confidential information and false claims).
When I asked Rabbi Berman - a former attorney - to call a congregant to ask for a referral (not for free help, but to find an attorney in that field of law), he refused. He literally would not lift a finger to help us. At the same time, he invited us in to talk about our 'feelings'. Considering that our children's safety was at risk, my husband and I had neither the time nor interest in discussing our feelings with a 'rabbi' who refused to make even a telephone call in response to an attack motivated by anti-Israel beliefs. I will add a link to the documents attesting to this within the next week.
We never heard from the rabbi or anyone else the synagogue ever again, until I wrote a letter expressing our disappointment. My family was then told we were no longer welcome as synagogue members.
This is not the first anti-Israel action the synagogue has done - they also reneged on an offer to hold an exhibition of The X-Ray Project, which shows the effects of worldwide terrorism. The committee involved said the project could be viewed as partisan, even though the terror depicted was not specific to Israel.
So if you want pretend 'friends', want to be without support at one of the worst times in your life and when your children's safety is threatened, don't mind being kicked out for mainstream pro-Israel political beliefs, and put up with hypocrisy at all levels (the synagogue insists they support Israel despite all the evidence that they don't), this is the place for you. Otherwise, another place of worship might be more welcoming. read more
