The service was beautiful--lasted about 1.5 hours on a Sabbath morning. They asked visitors to introduce ourselves and when it came time for yahrzeits, they asked all who were honoring one to stand and say the name of the person. The melodies were fairly traditional and I could readily participate. Afterward, at the Kiddush, several people welcomed me and I felt very comfortable. Really a lovely synagogue to attend.

Being a B'Nai Tikvah member has been my favorite part of living in Carlsbad. Rabbi Ben has done a…read moreterrific job making B'Nai Tikvah the kind of place where you look forward to coming after a long week to leave your phone in the car for a couple of hours and unwind. A more down-to-earth and inclusive temple you will not find. My kids love coming to B'Nai Tikvah's family-friendly services on Friday nights. The kids can be themselves: participating actively in the service or playing with other kids in the play room as they choose. Also, chocolate chip challah, treats, and juice/wine for kiddush. The congregation is small enough that we knew all the regulars on a first name basis within a few months. My kids mingled comfortably with the other kids and adults alike. Naomi does a great job with the Hebrew school on Tuesday evenings as well. We've gone to a few B'Nai Mitvahs here and they are well-prepared and confident reading from the Torah. My kids love being Jewish and my 8-year-old has an advanced appreciation for her age of the Jewish community's unique importance in promoting freedom, tolerance, justice, and the sanctity of life.
