I was surprised at where it was located and wondered how many times I may have passed it by during the day time; but at night, the synagogue is noticeable and unmissable from its glowing stained glass windows. Amazing! This is the last remaining free standing synagogue in the city (Detroit). Anyone in the City, if you work there, or if you are visiting, or planning a meal or afternoon in the City, should not hesitate to attend services for Shabbat on Friday evening or Saturday morning. I'm not Jewish, but about a year ago, I introduced my kids to Jewish culture through the Maccabeats' YouTube videos. When I told my kids that the Maccabeats were coming to town, they were super excited. When we arrived for the concert, we were greeted by a woman who said she wasn't Jewish either. She welcomed us and answered my questions about how we, as non-Jews, could respect Jewish customs. All the Jews we met were very welcoming also. My girls had a wonderful time dancing with the other kids; one of my kids even sat in an older girl's lap. It broke my heart to hear the Maccabeats talk about some Jewish kids' challenges attending schools with few, if any, other Jews. My kids and I say "Shalom aleikhem" (i.e., peace be upon you) to our Jewish neighbors.

Sure, I learned how to read biblical Hebrew in the 2nd grade, but I was never taught the meaning behind it. Instead of making me appreciate where I stood religiously, it made me want to be less observant. I didn't pick up an interest in Judaism until high school when I had no commitment to a religious education program. The only thing that keeps me coming back is Cantor Greenbaum and his unique voice that lends itself to the chanted prayers. Other than that, I'd easily join a different synagogue.

It is a very friendly place with great clergy (Rabbi Bob Gamer, Cantor Sam Greenbaum and Rabbie Emeritus, David Nelson) and helpful office staff. Members are encouraged to wear nametags on Saturday morning so that people get to know each other. There are frequently kiddush lunches after services. There is a first rate pre-school plus a Hebrew School that seems to get better every year. While there is a large older contingent, there seems to be a growing number of young families becoming active. Worth checking out!

Being an out of state Jewish college student it can be a little lonely when your family is far…read moreaway. When I go to MSU Hillel it really is a "home away from home" for me. Most of the friendships that I have made at MSU are from Hillel. I have met Jews from all over the state of Michigan and suprisingly a lot who are out of state students like myself. Every time I come to Hillel at MSU I am just amazed at all of the wonderful programs and events that they offer. Throughout the week, they have events such as broomball, bowling, lectures on Jewish history/politics,cooking and volunteering programs such as Tzedek and Teva that are very involved with the Lansing/East Lansing community during the year. Every Friday night, they have Shabbat reform and conservative services. Even if you are not in the mood to attend a service you can go to their delicious Shabbat meal every Friday night. During the major Jewish holidays they hold services and serve high holiday meals. Once a month on Sundays Hillel holds a brunch with all of the Jewish favorites such as bagels, lox, cream cheese, brownies, and kugel. WHO COULD ASK FOR ANYTHING MORE? In addition to all of these wonderful programs, Hillel also offers an alternative spring break trip and 2 Israel Birthright trips (winter and summer) during the year. I can not end this review without giving credit to Robyn, Cindy, Audrey and all of the staff of MSU HIllel who are so welcoming and friendly and create these amazing programs mentioned above. They are always there if you need someone to talk to or even to just say hello. MSU Hillel has to be one of my favorite groups to be apart of on campus. I look forward to coming back for the rest of my time at MSU.
