The congregation and community are invited to actively participate in the sustainability of the gardens and make it even more productive by warmly embracing the garden volunteers and taking active responsibility through the contribution of time, talents, or financial resources for this very special venue. Christian's from all religious affiliations are actively called to service by volunteering their time, talents, and resources to make our world a better place for all of us. If anyone LGBTQ+ is reading this...I have been a part of and led at MANY similar churches…read morenationwide with great worship, youth group, and evangelical-style preaching. Most are not LGBTQ+ affirming but are what they call "welcoming." I thought this was one of those types of churches. My wife, kids, and I were recommended this church by one of our friends. She said it would be a good fit for us. At that same time, another mom of our kids' friends invited our kids to a movie night and told them to invite their parents to come along. It seemed great since more than one person had recommended this church to us, so we went with our kids. We attended the movie night and a couple of Sunday services, and our kids loved the youth group, so we wanted to give it a shot. Unfortunately, it turns out that the mom who invited our kids to the movie night did not know we were a gay family. We showed up and sat by her and her husband, and two days later our friend came over very upset. We asked what happened, and she said the couple that invited us to the movie night were deacons from the church and also her neighbors. They had realized at the movie night that we were a lesbian couple with kids, and they informed our friend that we were not welcome at the church and that we should not be attending. I got a call right after that from the church after filling out a visitor card, and I told the lady on the phone what happened. She said she works closely with the pastor (I forget her title,) and said that the pastor would want to speak to us about what had happened. I contacted her again when I did not hear anything back, and she told me she did tell the pastor about the incident, and that he would be calling us, but is very busy. .... I quickly realized it was a call that would never come, lol. We had to tell our kids that we needed to look elsewhere. I am happy to have found an affirming church that we love and are very involved with, but in case any other LGBTQ+ individuals, families, or allies are looking for a church in this area, I wanted you to know what happened. No matter what their beliefs are, I do not believe this is how Jesus would have wanted a family seeking a church to be treated by DEACONS in the church. I was the daughter of a mother who was known worldwide in the Christian world as a leader, speaker, and president of a Christian organization, and a father who was an elder, nationwide leader, and board member, so I was appalled at how church leadership handled this.

We are so incredibly thankful that we found Christ Lutheran for our children! When considering…read moreprivate schools, we visited several local campuses and were overwhelmed with a feeling of safety and belonging when we entered Christ Lutheran. The staff are kind, committed, and caring, and the campus itself is beautiful with a large grass soccer field and full track, lots of outdoor play space, and a calm and inviting vibe. It immediately felt "different" when we walked into this beautiful school for the first time. The wonderful families that welcomed us made it feel even more like a home. One huge benefit of a K-8 school is that kids get to avoid a lot of the akwardness of middle-school because they continue right on from preschool through 8th grade in the same environment and with the same group of kids. That continuity takes away a lot of the stress and anxiety that middle school can impose. We also love the quality of the education here - our kids consistently test in the top tier of local students and are accepted to academically rigorous magnet and gifted programs for High School. Some really cool things about Christ Lutheran include the amazing trips students take as a class - 5th graders go to Astro Camp and spend two nights there learning about astronomy and science up in the mountains of Idyllwild. 6th grade does a 3-night trip to an outdoor education center where they hike, learn about the natural world, zip line, and make smores by a campfire. 7th grade travels to Catalina for several nights where students explore nature, kayak, snorkel, and learn about our unique coastal California ecosystems. And 8th grade spends a week visiting Washington D.C. and New York City, going to pretty much every major monument, memorial and landmark, visiting the smithsonian and congress, civil war battle fields, and even seeing a live show on Broadway. We are thrilled with our Christ Lutheran experience and the safe, academically rigorous, and nurturing environment that it has provided for our children. My family never expected to be at a private school, but looking back now I wish we'd found Christ Lutheran sooner. If you are looking for a safe place to send your kids where they can grow and thrive in the South Bay, this is your best bet. Our experience with this school was extremely disappointing. LGBTQ+ students did not feel welcomed or safe. Instead of creating an environment where students could learn and grow, the school treated harmless self-expression as something inappropriate. Students who were simply trying to be themselves faced constant scrutiny, disciplinary action, and pressure to hide their identities. We also witnessed another transgender student eventually leave the school after experiencing similar treatment. One of the most concerning aspects was the constant monitoring. Certain students were watched far more closely than others, their belongings were searched, and their online activity through school resources was monitored. Physical contact by staff sometimes occurred in ways that made students uncomfortable, and there was little sense of privacy or trust. Beyond the treatment of students, the quality of education was also disappointing. The curriculum felt extremely limited and did not adequately prepare students to understand the world around them. There was very little emphasis on learning about different cultures, perspectives, or real-world issues. Instead of encouraging curiosity, questions, and independent thinking, the school seemed more focused on enforcing conformity. The school environment often felt based on fear rather than support. Students learned to stay quiet instead of asking honest questions or expressing themselves because they were worried about getting into trouble. This school may appeal to families who specifically want this type of environment, but families looking for a school that values inclusion, academic growth, respect, and emotional well-being should carefully consider other options. Every child deserves to be treated with dignity and to receive an education that prepares them for the diverse world they will live in.
