There was a saying you can "get anything on Joseph avenue". Joseph avenue in it's heyday was predominantly of Jewish settlers from eastern and southern Europe. The community thrived. But through the years, attrition, cramped conditions, people started moving out of the city, many to the eastern suburbs, many to the Brighton area.Just a few blocks south of the Temple was where the riots of the 60's started. Today Temple B'Nai Israel sets vacant, in rough condition. However it has been named a historical site and is being considered through funds to be redeveloped as a museum or arts center.

Nowhere else could you find a more wonderful, caring, warm group of people! Beth David is also the perfect size; it's not at all anonymous (quite the contrary), but it has enough of a critical mass.
