I sometimes get my waxing done there if I'm due at the same time as my hair. Purple is the main colour scheme with large guilded mirrors on the walls, shampoo, conditioner, hair spray, gel, brushes and hairdryers for sale, the chairs are comfortable and conversation flows. A good selection of magazines to catch up on the goss. The opening and closing hours are not set in concrete so it's best to phone and make an appointment.

Staff at the The Palladeum specialise in head massage (which let's face it, is half the fun of a salon visit). Your visit begins with a chat and consultation, then it's onto a quick shoulder rub which sets the scene for relaxing and 'me time'. Be prepared. If you weren't aware of the shoulder rub, it could be awkward! Owner Meshelle is great at what she does and often takes part in fashion week shows; also this is a Redke salon. The Palladeum's soundtrack is always outstanding, as they invest in specialist recordings. It ranges from reworked dance classics to somewhat ambient music that again encourages relaxtion. Open from Wednesday through to Saturday, with weekends being super-busy.

However, the resident hairdresser at Kudos, David, is definitely a good choice. He used to work at SAX along Unley Rd until he recently opened up his own place. The interior of Kudos is very appealing. It is black and white, with minimal decorations and a red couch. Oh and the chairs. When you are having your hair washed you get to sit in chairs that give the rest of your body a massage. I didn't think there was anything better than a head massage at the hairdressers, but this is it. David always gives a good haircut. He is also amazing at dying. Once I decided my pink hair needed to be blonde. I proceeded to sit at the hairdressers for three hours until I had an amazing white blonde colour! Another lady works out of the hairdresser, doing manicures, spray tans and waxing. This means you don't even need to leave the shop to have the works!

Nick does the men's, and Silvia does the ladies', but either are fine to give you a trim when you pop in. During the course of any haircut, they will invariably receive several visits from friends or elderly locals. On my first trip here, while Nick was cutting my hair, a tiny old lady came in to bring him some biscuits she had made. She only spoke Italian, so Nick chatted with her for 15 minutes, hearing her usual stories and filling me in. She took a liking to me and "bella" was bandied around, while she showed me how she used to be a great singer. I also got to hear about Nick's family and his kids' careers. He's a reflective sort, often stopping for a moment before making a statement about life that you appreciate, because he put real thought into it and because it's a sensible truth. Their prices are very low, but remember to bring cash. I come here for a lot more than a haircut, and that's a good thing too, because with all the distractions it takes quite a while!
