Amazing spot to grab a coffee! Such a great vibe from the staff who wanted us to try it all!…read more 2 espressos (for comparison), the very unusual iced coffee with coconut water, and a flat white later we were properly caffeinated and ready to start our day. Cafe Secreto is an amazingly small, intimate coffee shop near the "Largo do Machado" Metro stop,…read morewith friendly staff and good quality coffee. The baristas are friendly and some speak english fluently, while others have a basic english proficiency - You will be able to communicate if you do not speak Portuguese. The owner who brought this unique cafe to life can often be found there, and the entire staff have a love for high quality coffee. Be aware, the actual location can be a bit hard to find. It is down a corridor/alley that has many small businesses along it which is only for pedestrians/for walking. The cafe consists of a long bar, with a few seats, and the baristas (usually anywhere from 2 - 3) working behind it. Upstairs there are a few small tables that are great for enjoying with a friend or getting a bit of work done. Outside, there are a few tables as well. The drinks are of good quality. One of the baristas told me about how most of Brazil's good quality coffee beans are exported to other countries, so they go through a special coffee bean roaster based out of Sao Paulo(? can't remember exactly) that is known for acquiring high quality beans. They have typical lattes, espresso, and cappuccinos, but also inquire if you are interested in being more adventurous, in some of their more unique drinks (ones created by the cafe). I tried a coconut water with espresso iced drink that was delicious and refreshing. Also they have hibiscus tea which is refreshing on a hot day. They have a number of pastries that are more specific to Brazil, and a small oven in which they warm things fresh. They also have a sourdough toast with butter that an expat recommended (sourdough is not common to Brazil and is an unique offering). Prices are reasonable, with drinks from R$5 - R$10. They do have Wifi. I would recommend this place for the ambiance and the quality of coffee.

Dom Mário is hands down the best restaurant on Ilha Grande in Abraão!…read more Make a reservation if you're coming with a large group or on the island during the busy season or holiday week, as they don't have all that many tables. You start off with a bread basket and homemade butter with herbs and they had lots of English music playing on the speakers throughout the night. That butter though. Try at least one of the many caipirinha or caipiroska varieties for 12-14 reais each. I tried the maracuja com gengibre (passion fruit/ginger) and maracuja com manjericão (passion fruit/basil) and loved both of them. If you're a foreigner ie non-Brazilian, let them know if you prefer more or less cachaça in your caipirinha to get the drink of your taste. Vegetarian dishes are very sparse here, though my waitress did mention they had a veggie risotto that wasn't on the menu and they may have others as well. They are mostly known for their seafood dishes. I enjoyed my filet with gorgonzola sauce too. The restaurant is al fresco with a covered roof. Some of the tables are in the sand, so you can feel like you're on the beach even though you're a few steps away from the sounds of the waves crashing in. All around, a great experience and not so in your face of a tourist trap like the beachfront restaurants.
