This school combined students who are from many elementary schools in the district. They have 7 and 8 grade. Each grade belongs to each side of school. The hallway has a line in the middle to help students to travel safely from one class to another. The teachers are knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. In some classes, teachers give students second chances to retake tests to improve their grades. Hot lunch is available for all students with reasonable prices. They also have a snack room full of delicious and reasonably priced snacks. The majority students are taking the bus to school. There's an police officer on site during school time. After they finished 8th grade, many students go to different high school based on their home location (such as Bartlett High School, South Elgin High School ) to continue their education and fulfill their goals.

This school year (2013), we have two children enrolled in St John the Evangelist. One is in first…read moregrade and the other is in kindergarten. There were a few major factors that played a role in our decision to choose St John the Evangelist: 1) Class size: Last year, our son's kindergarten class was the first year they split into two classes instead of a single class and it helped in making class sizes that were already comparatively small, even smaller. The amount of attention each individual student receives is incredible! 2) The Principal was a delight in our interview process and has been an administrator and teacher in Catholic Schools for quite some time. She personally gave us a tour of the school, invited us to sit in classrooms to examine teaching styles (we visited multiple grades, not just the kindergarten). She is determined to get the best out of her staff and our children each day. She is extremely approachable and available to us, as parents, with any questions we have. 3) Our family's Catholic faith was a big reason in choosing to educate our children through SJE. It is truly inspiring to see our children grow in mind, body, and spirit simultaneously. We are truly grateful that our Catholic Tradition is integrated in their educational upbringing. One of the many success stories that we have with our son from last school year is that he was already reading beginner books by himself after just a couple of months of Kindergarten. I couldn't believe my ears when he started reading to me; it concreted our decision even further. Now that we are armed with our own experiences of St John the Evangelist, we wouldn't hesitate doing this all over again. We highly recommend anyone considering a private education in the area to put SJE on their short list of institutions for consideration. It is a blessing to know our children are getting the best of what the teachers and administrators have to offer every day.

Stumbled across St Johns. Ironically I used to attend St Johns back in the 90s. Sounds like nothing has changed. At the time I was the ONLY black student in the entire school. k-8. I felt like more of an attraction than anything. Definitely felt like the teachers were all harder on me than my peers. Mind you, I have never been a troubled kid, nor a bad student. I was considering allowing my children to go there but thanks to Lady L, I think I will pay more for another school rather than subject them to the type of scrutiny and racism I endured while there.
