Our excitement was shared by the packed theater. The theater is intimate enough for this kind of Genre. A horseshoe shaped upper area all in Red Velvet and Gold. A giant Chandeliers hangs from the center of the ceiling inside the Auditorium. A smaller chandelier hangs in the Lobby of the Theater. The acoustic is good and so was the viewing from our seats. I hope to come back to enjoy more Zarzuelas in the not so distant future.

Ballet + flamenco? It's true. I saw it. I am a witness. I'm sorry, perhaps I'm from Canada and born in Hong Kong. There's nothing here like that. Ballet with Spanish influences!?!? GAH I wish I lived in Madrid! I would visit here nonstop. Now for tourists, there's cafe on the 2nd floor. There's also a little outdoor area (in the centre of this building) where you can enjoy a coffee and study away. Apparently upstairs there's a patio but it's not always opened. This patio lets you see Lavapiés from above, and I hear it's nice. There are exhibitions as well, look at the dates on their website and the room number. These are opened during regular hours. When La Casa Encendida closes, shows start at 10pm. I watched a dance/song comedy performance, you can buy tickets online or at the door. People start lining up early! There is a lot happening and the staff expects you to do know what you're doing here, you can't aimlessly walk in and hope they'll guide you. They will not! I found my shows and exhibitions (as well as the room number) online, but the website is hard to navigate especially with Google Translate on. You definitely need to do a bit of research before coming! They don't have shows or exhibitions all the time, hopefully they have something going on during the days you're in Madrid :)

The Theatre has that historic feeling that you are looking for when visiting Spain. The theatre has been well maintained and the service is very good (the lines moved quickly upon entrance). The only downside to Theatres in general is their lack of a decent selection of "Tapas" or foods during the intermission break. With that said, my first experience here was very good and would always be willing to watch a show in this theatre!

I loved the fact that everyone just kinda minded their own business and did their shopping, while most stood or sat around, eating food or talking with friends. We sat in the square, eating slices of pizza, and people watched while avoiding hungry pigeons and random folks offering to take photos LOL. It's a tourist spot, so what can you do! But it was a nice respite from the hustle and bustle of the main city, and I took a stroll every day.

If you're in the west side/ south west of the city, you must walk along Madrid rio and then go into the Matadero. You might want to go into a movie, have a bite to eat around, visit the free exhibit or if it's winter maybe even ice skate. Like I said, Matadero is really a nice place for the family and to spend some time walking around, but it always leaves me with a feeling that I want more from it, as if there is too much space and it's not being quite utilize or something of the sort. I do suggest you try it and enjoy it because it has many things to do and perhaps it's more enjoyable for a whole family than for a couple.

The free greenhouse next door is also worth a look and very quiet and peaceful. The park nearby is a great way to escape the hordes of tourists in the downtown core.
