The downtown Portsmouth branch of TD is the best. Always friendly and helpful. If they don't know the answer, they find it for you. The manager (Lisa) is awesome as are the Asst Mgr (Erin) and the crew: Melanie, Anthony, Diane, Mike etc. I also like their safety deposit boxes: the locations and rooms are convenient and you feel safe. read more

I don't know who this guy is who wrote the review back in 2016 about "fake friendliness", but I can tell you that I certainly wouldn't want to have to interact with him or his company. I actually work for an investment company, but one that doesnt offer bank accounts. I opened an account here, and have been nothing but impressed by the professionalism, the courtesy, and the attitude of all of the employees of this branch. Virtually every interaction with this bank has been excellent. Perhaps that guy would be better served at a less friendly bank. I think B of A is accepting new accounts! TD Bank - America's Fakest Bank After almost three years of enduring the phony friendliness at TD Bank - not just this branch, every branch - I decided today enough was enough. I own a business as well as work for a large corporation. I go to a lot of stores, the post office, take-out places, banks, etcetera, on a regular basis. I know what normal behavior is for clerks and other employees of these businesses. We all do. Yet about three years ago, if I walked into a TD Bank branch, all of a sudden I was accosted with a barrage of phony friendliness. From 50 feet away, four clerks would almost shout, 'Hello! How are you today?!'. What? When you get to the counter, another barrage. 'How's your day going?', 'Any plans for the weekend?', 'Is it still cold out? It's supposed to warm up later'. I don't know any of these clerks personally. They never asked these questions before. Nor did any of the four clerks at the post office just down the street. The difference? The USPS clerks still don't. Nor does any other place I walk into. It's the customary 'Hello, how are you?' or, 'Hello, what can I do for you?'. I am now an expert in TD Bank phony friendly-speak: on Thursdays, they start with the fake interest in your weekend plans. Always the same exact line: 'Any plans for the weekend?'. All I did was say hi and hand them a deposit or whatever. But if it's a Thursday or Friday, you will get that exact line every time. Today was the last straw: I got the asinine 'Doing anything fun today?' as the selected line on this woman's list of official TD Bank fake-friendly lines. I've heard the line many times before at TD - never ONCE anyplace else in past 40 YEARS - and as it was anything but a fun day for me I finally snapped and told her to spare me the stupid lines TD trains her to say. A look of feigned innocence didn't help my mood: "If you try to tell me TD doesn't train you to say these things then you're lying to a customer. So go ahead and tell me that they don't. Try me." She sheepishly looked down, finished the deposit and handed me the slip. But I couldn't let it go. "If you people think that this fake friendliness nonsense doesn't annoy the hell out of many other customers you're sadly mistaken". Which was an understatement. About a year ago, during a holiday dinner, for some reason this subject came up and I went on a short rant similar to the one you just read. In unison, three of the seven adults present said, 'Oh, my God, can you believe them?', and related similar experiences - and annoyance. I would therefore presume that TD really is annoying many customers with this asinine fake friendliness campaign. If you think I'm overreacting, I've endured three years of this nonsense before saying a word. I was brought up in a polite family life and know that what TD is doing is socially improper: it's a campaign of phony social interaction to build a façade of friendliness in front of their branches. Pretending to care about my day or weekend plans and forcing me into a pretend conversation which I have no interest in having is absolutely impolite and unfriendly. It makes me wonder what else is fake about TD Bank. Other branches have toned down this nonsense but this State Street branch is incessant in its accosting of customers. read more

I've had TD Bank for about a year, and recently applied for a small personal loan with them at this branch in downtown Portsmouth. I applied and everything seemed to go smoothly, and the man who helped me through it said I would hear within 72-96 hours (in business days, I applied on a Saturday) so I would probably hear by the middle of the following week whether I was approved or not. Come the following Friday I still did not hear anything, and whenever I called I was told that anyone who could help me had either just left for the day or had meetings all day and wouldn't be able to come to the phone. The people I spoke to on the phone asked if I would like to leave a message to be contacted either later that day or the following day. I said yes, but still I heard nothing, and felt ignored. I work late, and even with the extended hours at TD (one of the reasons I began banking with them), it is hard to physically get into the bank before closing without taking time off work. I finally found out about the loan by going into the Kittery branch and asking a manager in person if she'd be able to help me. Understanding my frustration, she helped me out and I finally found the answer. I'm disappointed with the lack of communication and helpfulness with the folks at the downtown Portsmouth location, and will not be returning to the downtown Portsmouth location, if I even decide to keep my account with TD Bank (I miss the Penny Arcade too!) :-( read more

I have had a TD bank account since 2009. Going into the Kittery office is always efficient and fast and the people are super nice My one star is not about the tellers at the actual branch. It's about getting on the phone or being locked out of your TD bank account on line because I don't agree with their data collection of your personal information "all in the name of security". I have been locked out now for a month because I refuse to accept a "security code" to be texted to my smartphone. You'll see that one of these days, all of your information will be breached and you wish you hadn't given them your cell phone number. One doesn't need to give your cell phone number to TD Bank if you don't want to but you do need to give it to them to access your "on line" account from your personal computer-preposterous! They have said that they are "beefing" up security and are well ahead of all other banks which is complete BS. Their call wait times are over one hour to speak with a person because apparently I'm not the only person who is having a problem with them in their soliciting information. Even before this happened, their call wait times were still over one hour as they prioritize the people who call in with their smartphones over the ones calling in from their land line. What they are doing, no other bank does; if theres a problem with you logging on line, banks will send a security code to your e-mail or verify you while you speak with them AND you don't have to wait an hour to speak with someone. TD Bank is not going to do this, they are going to make all of us miserable in their quest to data populate. For those of you who have no problem with this should ask yourselves why do I need to give my cell phone number? This behavior from TD bank is disturbing as they toot "come to expect legendary service and banking convenience". PUKE! read more
