Go Vikings! I…read moregraduated from Mills High School and was one of the few (2-4) Asian girls in the Class of '68. My father was George Yin-Shou Che, who served as General Consul of the Republic of China in the Bay Area from 1961-1968. Later, the Republic of China was referred to as Taiwan, when the People's Republic of China (Mainland) bumped Taiwan out of the UN. I remember my 4 years at Mills High School with great fondness. Though I was always in the minority - e.g., my Latin class had 25 white boys and 1 Chinese girl (me) - I never felt isolated or alone since my 5 close girlfriends were independent thinkers who focused on the wackier side of life. I credit the students and teachers of Mills High (1964-1968) for instilling in me the traits of hard work, good health, good humor and love of people. At Mills High in the 1960's, I learned the BIG lesson that anything is possible if I wanted it and didn't give up! So after Mills, I went on to major in Chemistry, get a Ph.D., have a family, start a US pharmaceutical company (OPTR) and bring a life-saving drug (DIFICID) to the world. This summary of my life and career is short, but the journey was very long one. This year, I'm a member of the MHS Class of '68 2013 Reunion Committee and in my search for MHS info, I found this "Yelp MHS Review" page, and I could not resist giving my Mills High School a five-star rating! For Kindergarten, it combines academic learning, personalities and social abilities building. My kid is happy to go to school every day. She has been taught so well in Language/Math subjects that she has exceeded grade levels based on tests. She also likes the Art, Music, Tech, PE and Spanish classes. Ms. P and Mrs. A are experienced and super nice teachers. They set high standards on learning and personal growth, but also tailoring to each child's overall progress. I like the daily/weekly communication from both teachers. It makes knowing my child's school experience so much easier. For the school, it feels like a welcoming big family. The office is so supportive daily. Principle S. and VP C. are always there taking care of the school and students' needs. Teachers are friendly, students are polite and caring. Parents remain close and support each other. SD offers several activities every month that parents can enjoy with their kids: Annual festival, Breakfast with Santa, Art activities, Music Performance, etc. It also has many sports programs. The Extended Care program after school time has fun activities and is very affordable. My kid enjoys staying in school with her friends all the time. It says that it takes a village to raise a child. We feel that St. Dunstan is providing such wonderful environment to help my kid thrive.

The principal, faculty, and staff truly care about each student and it shows. If you are considering private high school, I highly recommend St. Dunstan's to lay the academic foundation. My daughter loves her teachers and said that the high school entrance exam was relatively easy compared to what they are learning at St. Dunstan's. I've spoken to many parents who transferred their kids in for middle school who've said they wished they had started at St. Dunstan's sooner because it is such a welcoming and warm environment. They have a ton of extracurriculars and events. Sports intramurals for K-3 and competitive sports for 4-8th. We have musical theater classes and performances. As well as Spanish classes and technology. Every month there are family friendly events- from family movie night, Casino Night, Lobster Feed, the father/daughter dance, family bingo night, lady knights and men clubs events, and so many fun events. We have the spring festival and middle school dances. Fun Day with games and an end of year school wide picnic. The kids are kind, respectful, and inclusive. The parent community is amazing and we have made lifelong friendships with other families. Choosing St. Dunstan's for our kids is probably one of the best decisions we have made for their academic, emotional, and social well being. We are grateful to Dr. Sandoval and her team for creating an environment where our children are thriving!

Daily Academic Support Systems (DASS) has worked out really well for my 8 year-old son, Aiden. He…read morestarted when he was in first grade. He will be returning for the 3rd year in the fall, and I will be enrolling my daughter who will be six. Initially, I had reservations about enrolling my son in DASS. The program has ~40 kids with many of them older - up to high school age. I was concerned that my 1st grader was too young, may not get enough attention, and would be bored spending all afternoon doing homework from 2:30 until 6pm. My concerns quickly went away because Marian Kong, the program director, is great. I would recommend DASS to parents who want affordable after-school homework support. And here's why: 1) My son gets help from a tutor for his homework. I don't have to spend time helping him with homework after a long day at work. It's done. 2) He is learning Chinese. A Chinese tutor comes in 2X a week and he is picking up some basic Chinese. (And he seems to enjoy it!) 3). Marian communicates well with the parents and keeps a close eye on the kids. I can either ask her to help Aiden focus on an area that needs work, or she would proactively let me know what he needs to work on or how he is progressing. They also provide additional worksheets for the kids to work on if they are done with their homework. I like her approach - with a Chinese academic focus but also balanced with the American individualized learning. She works with kids based on their individual needs. My son loves to read. So not only did she encourage him to read on his own, she had him read with other kids to help them develop more interest in reading. It also helped him build his self-confidence. 4) They are located across from the library - easy access to books (more reading). 5) There are actually many kids his age there. Aiden loves the free play time, and enjoys playing a variety of games including chess, puzzles and hide and seek.
