Such a beautiful bridge with an interesting/tragic story. The bridge was designed by Thomas Bouch and first constructed in 1872. On 20 June 1879, Queen Victoria crossed the bridge during her return from staying at Balmoral, then on the night of the 28th December 1879, the bridge collapsed during high winds. A train carrying seventy-five passengers and crew, plunged into the icy waters of the Tay. All seventy-five people on board were killed. It is hard to imagine the tragic circumstances behind this bridge when looking at how beautiful it is and how beautiful the location is and I send my deepest respects across the water to the victims of this tragedy. An interesting fact is that Bouch is buried in Edinburgh's Dean cemetery and learning of this story, I now have a different view. read more
