In the mine, duck!
Roz M.

We literally stumbled across this castle when out exploring St Andrews. As members of Historic Scotland we don't need to pay for admission but didn't have our cards with us. The lovely Michelle kindly phoned the admin office to check our names and let us in with out having our cards. I'm giving the castle ruins a 5 star rating for the simply awesome mines you can explore under the castle! They are not for those who don't like confined spaces, can't squeeze through tights gaps or if you aren't wearing trainers or decent shoes, but we loved them. They fitted a hand rail and a ladder to access the lower parts but be prepared to do a bit of scrambling! The history of the mines is quite fascinating to read about and then to be able to explore them was brilliant. I think they should advertise this fact better as we nearly missed the mines. The castle itself is mostly a ruin but Historic Scotland have added lots of info boards / plaques to highlight what the remains used to be part of. There are lots of benches around the site and large central grass area that would be good for kids to run about and have a picnic on a nice day. We really enjoyed our visit, I'm sure the mild, sunny weather helped. I'd definitely go back for another visit the next time I'm in St Andrews.

Didn't actually go in as it's a ruined castle and didn't want to pay the admission but can see it in its entirety from a distance and impressive against the water. It's a short walk to the cathedral which has more places to explore. A must-see if going to St Andrews (second to the Links & Old Course). There's also 3 parallel streets (North St, Market St & South St) that make up the town center which with lots of shops, restaurants and bars. We tried an Indian / Thai on North Street but were shortly disappointed. Another thing to note is you have to pay for public toilets (30p) which was annoying so we skipped it and went for an early lunch! The Visit Scotland place recommended walking along from the street where the castle is off to the golf course but there actually isn't that much to see.. I'd say the walk is worthwhile from the cathedral to the castle then going off on to market Street towards the golf course and then along the beach. Wonderful place to visit especially if you get good weather!

This is a pretty but ultimately unspectacular castle ruin, with a capital "R" in "ruin." Certainly not worth paying for to get into. From the side (see my photo) you will get a pretty good impression of what to expect. And when you're walking along the front and side of the castle, that's pretty much everything you need to see. Spend more time at St. Andrew's Cathedral, which is much more impressive, and free (if you're not a total dork). The beach view from the castle is the same as from other parts of the promenade anyway. Scotland has so many spectacular and important castles to offer which will be worth your while and money. This isn't one of them.

Stopped here since we were in St. Andrews. A nice little gift shop leads you into a maze of information which, then pops out onto the castle grounds. The castle, isn't much more than ruins at this point however, it does have several rooms to walk through. Also, it features amazing views of St. Andrews Bay.

It's beautiful and historic. A very majestic place to visit and extremely picturesque. Everything you want out of an old Scottish castle.

Review Highlights - St Andrews Castle

The Castle itself, a ruin, gives fantastic views out across to Dundee, and also has several levels great for exploring.

I marveled at the joy of running in the greenery. However, I also realized I was out of shape on this heritage travel trip I was taking through Scotland (in July 2019). It had been a while since I ran a sub-5 minute mile (2012), but my zest for speed was reawakened (my personal best now, at 30 years of age in May 2023, is 4 minutes and 41.27 seconds). While making my way to the memorial I saw various insects and birds, though none of the famous Scotland red squirrels. Pondering this, I also started thinking about if it was time for me to find a new spirit animal, perhaps a Russian hamster... they run 10 kilometers (approximately 6.2 miles) during the night. While my mind, and occasionally my body, raced towards the memorial, I did not lose sight of it and the trail led directly to the memorial site. The memorial honors local people who died in various wars in the 20th century (1900s). The entrance was straightforward to find from the trail, admission was free, and the memorial itself was open to the environment. I liked the design, which helped me spot it from afar. Scurrying back to my car I arrived about a minute or two before closing.

When I was in my teens and lived in Stonehaven they used to hold the town's Remembrance Service up at the memorial every November which made the impact of the service even greater as it really brought it home to you that those who had died had been a part of the town and the landscape in all its beauty. It's free to enter the Memorial. There's a steep walk which is more than rewarded by the view, but this means that it may not be a suitable destination for those of limited mobility.

Therefore, no photos of the castle were allowed during the tour. Pictures were allowed in the waiting area prior to the tour as well as in a room at the end of the tour. There was plenty of information provided on the history of the family and castle. Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (Queen Mother) lived here, and her daughter, Princess Margaret, was born at Glamis Castle. It was also home to Queen Elizabeth II. This castle was the inspiration for William Shakespeare's Macbeth. Overall, the castle, gardens, and grounds were well maintained. When we got to the castle, we had to stand in a line to get in. The weather was on and off drizzly. However, the tour was well worth the wait. There is a gift shop and coffee shop. When you turn into Carberry you are met by a long, tree lined drive with cute wee bunnies hopping around the grounds, I couldn't help but let out a huge "awwwwwwe" at the beauty in front of me. Round the side is no less beautiful with well groomed gardens and knee-height maze-like plants (yip I had a wee run round!). Then there's the hotel; full of olde-worldy grandeur (you know, the kind with knights armoury and shields dotted about the place), you can't fail to be impressed by its appearance, and inside is no different. It's a rabbit warren of snugs, stairwells, nooks and crannies and so much fun to explore. The library is utterly charming while the drawing room has a piano tucked away in one corner (cue chopsticks by a slightly inebriated me!). There is a very small bar, which for a wedding wasn't ideal due to the large number of guests (probably fine for regular stays however), and a word of warning, it isn't cheap...2 (single) Hendricks and tonic waters...£14! And sadly not even served with cucumber! Bar prices aside it was a really lovely venue for a wedding, I'm told there is even a Chapel in the grounds - you can't get more romantic really. As an evening guest I haven't tried the food so don't feel I can award the full 5 stars but it's definitely now on my radar to go back for a meal.

The hotel is set in stunning grounds and we found it quite easy to find. We had booked through booking.com and experienced no issues with the booking process. We were allocated room 315 which was right at the top of the hotel with a window that unfortunately was painted shut. It was an unbelievably hot night when we stayed and the room was stiffling hot. It would have been nice to be able to open the window for fresh air. Although our room was compact there was a great use if space and we were very grateful if the free water! Due to my appt we didnt sample breakfast the next morning but I did manage to make great use of the amazing white company toiletries on offer and the shower was brilliant! I would really like to return here and stay when i dont have the stress of such a major life event looming where i can truely relax.
