Shortly after returning from Australia and New Zealand…read moreI had a call from Hannah Mirsaeedy and I was back in a long-term temporary assignment soon after. I've got such a nice boss in the city and my temporary employers have just been so helpful in trying to keep me employed around some long holidays that I've got coming up. Spring and my boss were very good at letting me have a day off for a competition prize that I've won. I had a lovely surprise when Sue Perry from Spring turned up at my workplace and presented me with my 'Temp of The Month' certificate. I've won this prize through other agencies but this was presented so much more nicely and I look forward to seeing my picture in a newsletter. Although I thought the voucher I won could have been for a higher value if I'm being honest. It's nice dealing with Sue and a sensible middle-aged woman for a change. I know I'm being paid less than some of the other Spring temps as I've seen the invoices come through the postroom where I work. However after visiting over 100 different countries, including Australia 11 times and having my flat and world cruises bought for me I'm not too bothered! These days one really gets a broom shoved up one's arse working the postroom no matter who the employer is. Up to the mid-noughties there used to be about 5 of you in a small postroom tripping over each other but these days you're on your own. I've had some variety in my role helping out the facilities department and reception. Yes I've been very lucky with this Spring Personnel temporary job and I used to work through them at different branches between 1999 and 2006. Excellent!

This place is very good for young people who need a bit of extra cash but dont want to be stuck in…read morethe same old weekend job and want a bit of variety. It is very easy to sign up to, all you need is NI card and passport, fill out a basic form, and answer a few test questions just to make sure you have good basic numeracy and literacy skills. It took no more than a day for me to get my first job from here. They just ring you up as soon as they have some work for you, for example, to fill in for someone who has called in sick ie cafe work. To attend events where venues need more bar/waiting staff for the night, but mainly its warehouse work ie putting together information packs etc. You are given a time sheet that you have to get your employer to sign and give back to Status. Then you just have to sit back and wait for a cheque, which almost always comes through on a friday. The pay is also minimum wage no matter what job you are doing. All in all, a brilliant idea for young people to get out there and gain experience in different areas.

That March, I started an archiving/postroom temporary assignment at a private investment bank through ROC/Temps-Online which proved to be one of my best jobs ever and lasted for 17 months. I won their Temp of The Month prize once. In more recent times, following the credit crunch, I've had short term assignments but I'm enjoying the variety to be honest. A media company that Temps-Online introduced me to in February 2006 call me in directly from home and I fax over my timesheet to the agency. I've completed over a year's work since 2006 on and off with this media company. Jools Lambe is lovely! They also have Christmas parties for their temps. I usually get on with their clients although I've had a couple of bookings that I would not have stayed at because I didn't like the bosses (but fortunately these bookings were only for a few days anyway). Pay rates are average and I have been paid on time nearly always.

One of their consultants rang me, saying she had found my CV online and would like me to go in and register. I went in at the time and date she decided (this bit is important). Well, I arrived and it was friendly enough. The receptionist was very nice, she checked my right to work and took a photo of me just for our records. She then gave me lots of forms to fill in which I started. The receptionist showed me an area with sofas where other job applicants were filling in forms too. I had only just started when my consultant came in, said hello, but then took the forms from me unfinished because she said there wasn't time to bother with all that because she was in a hurry. She then took me to an interview area with more sofas, asked me a couple of questions about my journey and where I lived, then said it was nice to meet me but she had to go to lunch now. I thought this was extremely rude and unprofessional, especially as SHE chose the time and date, and I had paid all my travel costs on the tube and train. I have emailed a couple of times but they have never been back in touch. I think they were well out of order and I wouldn't recommend them from this experience.
