After a lovely long walk along the Canal near Rodley, we were well in need of lunchtime refreshment…read moreand of course- needed a dog friendly pub. Sadly, the one near where we were parked was lacking a bit on the menu so we began our aimless drive to venture into the unknown of finding a dog-friendly but nice food serving pub- thought this was a bit of a Leprechaun idea! (aka- imaginary) After a bit of google help and nearly giving up on life, we stumbled upon The Old Glen House. The drive through the village had been quite nice and on 1st sight, the pub looked a bit underwhelming. How mistaken can one be! Not only is it a lovely setting but the menu offered and food provided was superb. I took advantage of a 'Blond ale' and the Mr had a Guinness, both were good quality and this place seems to be proud of it's Ale business and treats it well. We'd rang ahead to make sure the listing on the Internet was correct and they did still allow the pooches so they'd reserved us a table near the door and on the stone floor area (understandable as sometimes dog smells and carpets don't agree). I'd originally thought this would have meant us being stuck in the 'poor relation' corner but no way- I'd consider where we sat to be pride of place! The locals were very friendly and chatted away while petting the pooch- he obviously loved this. We absorbed the menu and had been told of a slight wait due to a party of 13 just getting in before us- didn't bother me, plenty more time to appreciate the surroundings. The pub is a very old building with decking and seating outside (and a Tea room annex attached which served teas/coffee/scones etc) and decorated to a modernish but very sympathetic high standard inside. Plenty of wood and wrought iron. We found it difficult to choose off the menu but eventually did so and the service was great. We were given so complimentary rosemary focaccia to sample while waiting for the food and I could have melted with it's gorgeousness! Served warm with lovely creamy butter. Rabbit and chorizo terrine to start with homemade tomato tapanade- OMG- lush as lush can be- very tasty, lots of flavoursome rabbit and chorizo and I must pinch the recipe for future! Our mains were Steak and chestnut mushroom pie with mash and sticky belly pork with soy and sesame noodles. Whoa- there was mounds of noodles and so much belly pork I thought I had been given 2 portions! It was absolute heaven! And with the silence that descended on the Mr- I am confident that the pie was top notch also- there seemed plenty meat in it to please him anyway. The puppy was suitably quite while whist fully waiting for scraps unfortunately for him it didn't work on this occasion- far too nice to share with the dog! A nice side of al-dente veges had been provided which were also very good quality and went lovely with both dishes. A couple at the bar who'd we established were regulars looked on salivating while we dined at the smells wafting their way. By the time we'd finished the main course, there was no way we could have managed dessert which I'm sure would have been just as delightful. A soda and lime, the half of ale,Guinness and all the food came to £33- a true bargain for the pleasure we had encountered. The staff are all so nice, the food top quality and the setting very welcoming. If you are ever in the area- pop by and you will not be sorry.

Called in here this evening after reading last two reviews. This place had rather a nostalgic air…read morefor me as we had many family picnics in the 50's at the top of the Glen, having come by bus from Keighley (I now live in Cheshire) and had a ride on the tramway up to the top. But I had never been in the pub or adjoining tea room. By car its not the most accessible place, you either have to do it from Baildon Village or from Eldwick. Strangers to the area should use a sat-nav ! Orderd a pint of Harvest Gold bitter (3.9%abv) £2.80 and was shown to the table by a pleasant mannered an chatty young lady, who brought the menus, enough to choose from but so extensive it takes ages to read . Now there was something you rarely see, Potted Shrimps (£4.95) and I decided to stay fishy and have the battered Haddock for main (£8.95) Before they were served , a different young lady, also pleasant mannered, brought a lovely chunk of Olive bread, which must have been either home made or from a local bakery. The shrimps arrived as expected in a small pot of dill butter, and four good sized pieces of excellent wholemeal toast and some green garnish. Thoroughly enjoyable. The fish arrived with proper home cut chips and a too small pot of mushy peas, too bright green in colour to have been home made the proper way and therefore must have been from a tin. The fish itself was well cooked , but was let down by the batter, a rather pale batter with a floury texture, I suspect from vegetable oil based batter mix. Yes it was crisp on the outside, but had a soft partially cooked floury layer on the inside adjacent to the fish. Not dark ,crisp and from beef dripping like the one time local Harry Ramsden used to serve at his nearby establishment in nearby Guiseley (alas Ramsdens chain now are but a shadow of their former self). I left most of the batter. Was a bit tight on time so declined a dessert. Bill was £16.70. I saw a good variety of other food passing by and it all looked pretty good, so maybe I have to revisit and try something else, but something should be done about that batter ! Another small criticism, could you offer better quality table napkins. Paper is fine but not so flimsy as the ones you are using. I stay a couple of days nearly every week in the area so should get the opportunity, and will happily review again.

Second internet date here with a blonde bombshell from Manchester. She was hungover from a night on…read morethe tiles in Liverpool but I was as fresh as a daisy. Initial impressions were 'warm' - there were a lot of rosy faced Yorkshire men sat around us. Food was good and the portions huge - I had the steak with chunky chips and my date had the caesar salad. Waitresses were young, pretty and attentive. Desserts were enormous and we shared one. Only complaint is that the staff started wiping down at around 5pm and dragging chairs across the floor - this didn't help my companion's splitting hangover and I was tempted to ask for some tin foil to chew on just to finish her off. VAT included on bill - tips in a pot by the till. Worth it for the size of the portions!!!!!

There are lots of highchairs and room for puchchairs but the menu isn't particularly child friendly, there are no specific options although they will let you order a half portion from the main menu. It's definitely not a cheap lunch out but if you go at the right time it's well worth a visit.

I firmly place Salt's in the category of local hidden gem. A charming little shop, it is packed to…read morethe rafters with whole Italian sausages hung from the ceiling, beautifully presented pasta and oils, chutneys and jams. Priding themselves on creating a Spanish-style delicatessen, Salt's have gone to great lengths to import an intriguing selection of hams and cheeses. This provides wonderful variety, but Salt's clearly understands the importance of locality with regards to their ingredients. Their sandwiches and salads are made using Yorkshire outdoor reared dry-cured ham and sausage, cheese from the Hawes creamery and various chutneys from the Ripon based Elizabeth Smedley range. Salt's came to my rescue recently by solving the problem of what to buy a couple for a Golden Anniversary gift. Their Spanish Hamper (£64.75) was a huge success - apparently the fig bon bons and partridge pate were the stand-out items. The price definitely makes it a special occasion gift, but the presentation and quality of the products are exceptional. A fantastic range of hot specials are available daily, a recent favourite was a deliciously succulent chicken and chorizo stew with vegetable couscous (£5.95 for an extremely generous portion). The local sourcing of ingredients and the involvement that Salt's has in the local farmer's markets, give this business a positive community feel, worthy of support.

My plan was to create hampers for my dearest and I needed the final few items - I wanted a mixture of food, drink and non-edible gift items and I'd sorted most of these at a variety of places but for the finishing touches! Having been advised that Salt's was *the* place to go for hamper-type goodness I wasn't disappointed. The arrangement of the shop is delightful to begin, as you wander through the door you're greeted by a veritable cornucopia of goodies. It's filled to burst with meats, cheese, chocolates, pickles, pate, chutneys and more. Can I say "yum"? Whilst the lunch time offerings come at a hefty price I can only imagine the delights one might experience in consuming some divine looking goods! Now to the hampers. The friendly lady asked me if I needed a hand and I explained that I was compiling my own hampers, but I needed the baskets and a few more final treats. She was only too happy to help me, in spite of the fact that they had their own ready made hampers (which looked fantastic!) and readied two baskets whilst I picked up a few extras. I opted for some of their specialist chocolate, the sea salt and rose varieties I can personally recommend having sampled it after Christmas, a few of their pates and some other added extras. Everything went down brilliantly and my folks couldn't be happier with their selections. As an extra bonus the lady even allowed me to take some of her cellophane wrapping to finish off the presentation, which was extremely kind and at no extra cost! A truly delightful deli with a hoard of specialist delights - worth every penny!
