    Fantastic pies is correct.

Went for a walk to Primrose Hill and found myself at that odd time of evening to be hungry in London. This would be 5pm or as they (and jet fighter pilots) say 17:00. This time for those not familiar is generally an hour before the better restaurants are open. They have closed for their lunch service at 3pm (15:00). So the choices are going to be limited. Now you CAN use the open now feature on Yelp but what that can do is help you find a pub that is technically open... but not yet servicing food. I that feeling of being all wide-eyes and excited and announcing to the barmaid "I'll have one of your famous pies!!!" Only to be told that they don't serve any food for another 45 minutes. And something about the look from everyone around me gave me the sense I should have known this. So a pint of cider will do and I turn around to find a place to sit when I see Nelson. Nelson is a cat. A pub cat. A cat so perfectly content to lie peacefully sleeping on the front bar rail. This gets an ancillary star if one exists. The menus come out (about 15 minutes late) as the staff switches from barmaid to two swift moving pleasant guys that make the bar run rhythmically as folks order food. I order the chicken w/leek and tarragon pie with mash. I'm not sure how they make these oversized hockey pucks of filled amazingness and I don't really care. Neither did Nelson who had approved of my selection by leaping off the rail bar and sidling up to my thigh to say he may want a bite of chicken once it's prepared. It was perfect. Great neighborhood pub off the beaten track and a couple blocks away from the hecticness of Camden town. I'll return one day and try another one of their rotating pies.

Steak pies here are definitely the way to go with a bit of Elvis in the background. A great pub quiz on the Wednesday and this pub has all the trimmings. Lots of different bitters and real ales. Alas no stouts. Other big plus, close to the overground, so can stumble home safely.

Really good food, lovely beers and nice staff. A nice littlelocal that brings on a mix of clientele. If you're in the area, it's worth a visit.

Certainly my favourite pub in London. Great Fish & Chips, fireplace, cats, beer selection and friendly staff.

My wife actually booked dinner reservations in advance for Ye Old Cheshire Cheese, it was one of a few we did that for rather than just popping in. For some of these, Cheshire included, it isn't a bad idea if you want a full meal to do so as it gives you a table in a dining area that is quieter than the More raucous areas of the pub and guarantees you plenty of elbow room to dine. Every pub has fish and chips, and we had our share of it during our 8+ day trek, but my wife swears by this place as having the absolute best. I'd likely agree with that--we both had the traditional fish, chips, peas platter and every bite was great. We had a few slices of sourdough to hold us over while waiting for those plates. My wife had a bit of wine, and I tried a lager, lower ABV ale, and a pour of scotch opting for their "house" scotch. The spirits/beer menu was the same I saw used at a couple of what I think must be "sister" pubs all using the same distilleries and brewers. We were too full to try dessert. Service was friendly. Not sure if it was the vintage of my scotch or her wine, but price-wise this was by far our priciest pub visit in the area and I can't quite point my fingers at why, but I don't regret our meal and time here. As for historic interest, you can find pictures and placards of many of the pubs famous patrons from history--Dickens, Mark Twain on visits to London, etc. A first edition of a Dickens' book adorned a post by our table.

Cool pub dating back to 1300s?…read more Fish and chips were great. Price was okay given its a popular and historic spot. Beer was excellent and prices reasonable Only complaint was the dining area was extremely quiet on a Friday afternoon. A little strange for a pub

The history alone makes it worth visiting, and the location is perfect if you're exploring the area. It feels very classic London in the best way. We stopped in for a pint and honestly... the whole after-work beer culture over there is something I really need to bring back with me to the States. The beer was great, the atmosphere was lively without feeling overwhelming, and it just felt like one of those places where people naturally gather and stay awhile. Definitely worth stopping into if you're in the area.

Two story space - the ground floor feature the bar and handles walk in lunch; the upstairs is a dining room for those with reservations. Fun fact, as part of the history, the pub used to be the host of bare knuckle fights and had regulars like Charles Dickens. Wildfarmed sourdough - served with whipped salted butter and Guinness butter. Well toasted bread and the butters with salt were well made. Fuller's London Pride marinated steak and ale pie - served with seasonal veggies and red wine gravy, as well as either mash potatoes or triple cooked chips. If there is one dish London does really well, it's their pies. It was beautifully made and loaded with steak. The red wine gravy was decadent and added a perfect amount of moisture to the pie. Triple cooked chips were perfectly crispy but fluffy on the inside. Corn fed chicken breast - served with garlic and sage butter, mash potato, cavolo nero, and crispy onions. Only took a bite of this as it was my partner's dish but the bite of chicken I had was very juicy and well seasoned.
