Peace Of Mind When Trying To Catch Your Flight…read morehttps://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/taxi-stockholm-15-00-00-stockholm-2?select=OYlkopPH5VCs7TBVZ-YnAQ&userid=3mNz5nQFTIBQm0oU5mBR0w SITREP We just disembarked from Royal Caribbean's "Serenade of the Seas" at one of Stockholm's Cruise Liner Ports of Entry. We were not the only cruise shop disembarking either. Imagine the logistical nightmare this can be when trying to get to another destination - this time an airport - within a specific time frame to make your flight. THE SETUP Unfortunately, we find out at the last minute as we are disembarking that Royal Caribbean Customer Service really dropped the ball on hundreds of us passengers when their system "disappeared", "lost", "screwed up" (take your pick) our final destination transportation plans to get us either back to downtown Stockholm and/or to the airport to catch flights. So there we are: we've just arrived at the Frihamnscaféet port terminal, and are trying to locate & grab our luggage, find our loved ones and friends in order to figure our transportation detail. ALTERNATIVES For those who did not make plans - or had theirs botched - it's difficult enough, like herding cats trying to find your ride (anywhere) with thousands of people in the terminal, at the curb, in the streets trying to locate your pre-made rides (if those were set-up correctly). Imagine if you are then stuck trying to secure a ride. *CABBIES & VANS: The port is some dozen miles or so outside of Downtown Stockholm. Cabbies and vans usually are only going to the port if they already have a patron reservation made in advance (and this is where Royal Caribbean dropped the ball on us because our reservations were not processed by the front desk as we had communicated to their agents, in person; * BUS: Only about $5 U.S., but the nearest bus stop is more than a mile away - imagine those in your party with two or three suitcases trying to make it down the street, and THEN deal with that on the bus. [That's how I actually got to the port with my one roller suitcase, which wasn't a big deal, but walking through half the harbor was a chore with it.] But the Port is basically on the other side of downtown Stockholm, so the buses come back to the downtown Stockholm "Central Station", where you then have to jump another $10 bus ride to get to the airport which is about another 20 miles out. Or you can catch a $15 bus that goes straight from Central Station to the airport. So at this point, you in at least about $15-$20, and anywhere between two (2) to three (3) hours transit, just to get to the airport. TAXI STOCKHOLM 15 Another international passenger gave us the recommendation to call Taxi Stockholm 15. As it turned out, a Taxi Stockholm 15 cabbie was going to be there in 20 minutes after they dropped off another cruise passenger on a nearby line's pier. RIDE METRICS: * The fee to go DIRECTLY to the airport was $125, but split between the five (5) of us worked out to $25 each; * The cabbie flagged us at the curb where he stopped and we saw him immediately since we recognized his taxi logo; https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/taxi-stockholm-15-00-00-stockholm-2?select=OYlkopPH5VCs7TBVZ-YnAQ&userid=3mNz5nQFTIBQm0oU5mBR0w * The car was big enough for 5 passengers (out of nine; four in our group were staying in Stockholm another 2 days) and all of our luggage; and most importantly; https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/taxi-stockholm-15-00-00-stockholm-2?select=sTxVf6s3m_1me5MrDJlDUQ&userid=3mNz5nQFTIBQm0oU5mBR0w * We made it to the airport within 20 minutes, which meant that ALL of us would make our flights with plenty of time to make it through Security, through Passport Control, and even catch a quick snack. https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/taxi-stockholm-15-00-00-stockholm-2?select=AD7dbcWTjFZposclfUBGJA&userid=3mNz5nQFTIBQm0oU5mBR0w THE LOWDOWN Much obliged to Taxi Stockholm 15 for putting our minds at ease and getting us to the airport without any attendant-incidents associated to being late. Stockholm Sightseeing offers a number of tours both by land and by boat. I took their "Under the…read moreBridges" waterway tour and I can recommend it because the only way to really see Stockholm, an area comprise of islands and waterways, is by boat. The tour I was on was basically in English, the American type of English, which the tour guide spoke so perfectly one wouldn't even know she wasn't a native of America with the possible exception of the fact that her spoken English was in fact better than that of most Americans. The boat was low immaculate clean and comfortable glass covered boat with heat which heat was invaluable as it was off season and rather cold. The tour took about 2 hours, and true to the tours name, Under the Bridges, took us under all sorts of bridges. Everything along the way was explained and I was able to see sights and obtain views that would have been impossible by land.

The Silja Line Vartahamnen is basically a cruise ship, which I personally am not a fan of cruises, but hey, this was quite a way to travel from Stockholm to Helsinki. It's a must for anyone traveling around the Nordic area. First of all, when I was trip planning, I was trying to figure out a way to get from Stockholm to Helsinki other than a plane, in order to see the area more, which is how I learned about this ferry. There's a ferry that goes from Stockholm to Helsinki aka Silja Line Vartahamnen, which is an overnight ferry that leaves Stockholm in the early evening and gets into Helsinki in the morning. I booked my ticket online, which was easy to do, and just like a cruise ship, there are different rooms that you can book, depending on the amenities and price you want to pay. I paid for a basic cabin, which was good enough for me as it had a private bathroom, twin bed, wifi, etc. Plus, when you're on this ferry, you're not going to spend all your time in the room since the ferry has entertainment, different restaurants, a duty free store, casino, etc. I was impressed with all that was offered here. This is truly an experience you must take if you're traveling around the Nordic region, especially between Sweden and Finland. And the ferry terminals were both very accessible by public transit, which was a huge win for me. I had a fun time traveling by sea to get to another country.

Still a decent little airport with a few dining options

What I walked into is an airport pretty behind on the times. Remember, I flew into this airport so my experience was primarily what I saw at the gate, customs, and baggage claim. This airport is no frills. From departing out of my plan the incoming terminal was pretty bland. Kind of sterile looking and blah. Customs was a super interesting experience. This was one of the longest customs lines I've ever been in. For non EU members our line took about an hour to get through. More wild was the hour was to assess about 50 people? Two lines, 25 people in each. They take their job very seriously which is a good thing but dang, the line was so slow and I would never have thought an hour. Hell my plane ride from Dublin to Stockholm was 2 hours, half of that flight I was spent in customs. Interesting to say the least. At least they are thorough. Last little quirks are near baggage claim are that the bathrooms are single stalls. The states could never. Three single stalls near one another? I think in LAX just one women's bathroom has 15 stalls. Wild. People don't need to go to the bathroom then I guess at this airport. Maybe that's why so many people used the plane bathroom?? lol. I thought it was weird for a short flight lots of people using the bathroom but maybe they knew what they were walking into. Baggage claim was old school. Lots of suitcases pilled up and some would even slide off of the belt as it doesn't have a protective arch to keep the bags in. Wild. Thankfully got my bags in a jiffy and was out of there. The one plus I'll give this spot is when you get outside they have a tremendous amount of taxis lined up. Literally rows upon rows waiting to whisk you away. That was very nice and convenient.

Don't forget to plan on 30-40 minutes on your trip when going to the airport, on top of being their two hours in advance. Great transport option!
