That said, I had no significant complaints. Jill and Alex were responsive and worked to conform to our requests, and our daughter found her assigned tutors engaging. And she, in turn, did the assigned work. We originally found Compass via recommendation by parents of an older student who had already used them. We, in turn, have now recommended them to parents of younger students whom we know. We told them the same thing I'll now tell you: Compass isn't the cheapest option, but I suggest you use them anyway. To us, the results were well worth the expense.

She was assessed at Huntington and we learned that she was a grade level or more behind on certain subjects. We knew that she needed additional support to get up to speed prior to the start of 6th grade. Mona provided a clear action plan to address my child's needs. We were provided a set number of hours that was an estimation of the time needed for my child to catch up to her grade level. We would meet up with Mona every 4-6 weeks to see the progress our daughter was making. We will see the scores our daughter achieved on different subjects. We would also discuss the focus of the upcoming weeks. The improvement was gradual in the beginning. Once my daughter got used to the process and routine, we saw dramatic improvement in her grades. We wanted our kid to have every advantage available because schools are extremely competitive nowadays, especially the UC's. First, we attended the PrepPoint SAT prep course, which is very reasonably priced and does a great job preparing your kid for the SAT. Our kid thought that it really helped. Then, when it came time for college essays, we hired Eva Holtz directly to help fine-tune the essay. At first my kid didn't like the idea and told us that we were wasting our money. However, by the time the process was finished, it was a different story. Our kid was saying that Eva was a tremendous help, and that the essays wouldn't have been anywhere near as well written without Eva's keen eye and unique perspective. Our kid got accepted into UCLA, UC Davis, and a bunch of other UC's, CSU's and out of state universities. We definitely feel that that every penny we paid for Eva's tutoring was very well spent! We emailed her to tell her the great news and thank her. We are experiencing an education environment we have been hoping to provide to our kid with an asynchronous learning style. At Acton, students learn at their own individual paces, together. Learning at their own paces, most of the time, but not always means accelerated. Sometimes, it takes a squat to leap higher. There are no teachers to lecture students on the same materials at the same time but guides to provide a guardrail to ensure students focusing on their goals each school year and milestones each session. We think Acton as a project-based progressive school. For example, in one session the elementary studio is learning oceanology. Students studied anatomy of gut and cleaned sardine, blew a tank of blue water to observe waves, created dioramas of coral reefs, and made dumbo octopuses by shredded papers. All of these are backed by students' own researches which were presented to their parents at the exhibition by end of the session. This review feels like overdue. We are very grateful to have an opportunity to learn and engage with Acton Academy. Kids need to feel safe, not judged, when they need more time to master a topic or make mistakes. They hold each other accountable to be kind, supportive, and inspiring. They bound with each other through music (taught by a musician), PE, and filed trips in addition to the science and art projects. Teamwork comes naturally because the students host seven exhibitions a year. In such a small community with ages from K to Middle School, everyone has something to contribute. I have to say the transition from a traditional school to Acton's learner-driven education model took our family sometime to embrace the differences. Now looking back, it was totally worth it. Part of me want to keep this micro-school a secret but I think it would be selfish if I do not share knowing other families may benefit from our experience.
