Hallertau is a fantastic brewery and has been a staple of the NZ craft beer scene for many years…read more On a recent trip I got to visit the source, and am thankful I did. If you're a beer fan visiting Auckland, it's worth the extra time and distance to visit. Located in the wine country, you feel far away from the city even though you really aren't. It's along a quiet road, you can't miss the cool retro sign. Parking is free and in the front. The place is much larger than you'd guess; the original brewery and taproom is the main building interior with vintage looking furniture and cozy lighting if it's too cold or wet to enjoy the outside. To the left is the beer garden, which is all enclosed with plants to make you feel you're out in the middle of nowhere. They have an outdoor bar here with pizza ovens and a meat smoker. There are tables and bar seating here. At the back is a climbing wall and playground for kids; the tables nearby have hot water pipes running through them so your tushy stays warm even in cold weather. In the main building is more seating and the indoor bar, restrooms to the back. They also have a merch area and lots of beer for takeaway. Their beer list is large and focuses mostly on their core lagers. Behind this area you'll see the main brewing equipment, which goes back well beyond this area. Outside I was given a tour of the finishing tanks and their garden, where they even grow hops for some of their small batch beers. Thanks to the generosity of friends, I got to try various pizzas, jalapeno poppers, and other appetizers. The pizza was maybe the best I've had in NZ, with so many locally sourced toppings and rich flavors. The beer is fantastic as well, think classic styles made to perfection. The bar staff is friendly, so quick to serve. I can't rave enough about this brewery, and it's really one you need to visit.

Previously home to a branch of ASB bank ( no doubt redundant in the face of online success), this Grey Lynn bar is a cute concrete fronted, sun drenched hideaway with a colorful deck and cosy modem interior to match. Offering a good selection of alcoholic beverages, a thoughtful sample of organic teetotal refreshments and a range of healthy (believe it or not) bar snacks, Pocket has created a niche of its own. Recommended are the taleggio and zucchini toasters and the hummus, however the rest of the menu also looks great. The staff are very friendly, the vibe is relaxed. If you live in Grey Lynn, this could definitely become your new local. If not, this is still a great little meeting and hiding place.

I typically go here most Sundays with my father. We turn up for an afternoon beer/coke and a snack before heading to the movies. More often that not, we sit outside and bask in the sun, while listening to some live music. Usually we buy their hot chips (delicious) but occasionally we branch out and get a bigger item to share, like their nachos or wedges! I would love to go back for dinner one evening, as I've seen their pizzas and they look rather nice. Aside from their standard hot chips, their other 'snack' meals are quite large - which makes them perfect for sharing! I would definitely recommend coming here if you want a chill, relaxed vibe. Oh, and tip the musicians - we want to keep the live music coming!!

I had just walked in to the city from Mount James. Because an older gentleman had told me " it's such a beautiful day to walk". So I did. Yup about 4 miles. Lol. He sucked me into it. Lol. So an hour and 20 mins later I made it. And I needed a good beer. And they have me many to sample before making a choice. They even had Lagunitas. I was shocked to see that. And the other import was Guinness. So props to them. I did order the Steak and chips. With peppercorn sauce and blue cheese. It was a good steak. Made to order. Mid Rare. Yes. That's how I row. No greens here. I'll have to double up next time. But they did lead me in a direction for more drinks.

Young Maori girl took the order of someone who. sat down after us and was clearing tables when we were obviously waiting to have our order taken. Every time we needed something had to get up and ask. This girl and another staff member chatting with each other when there were empty drinks on table and I we had our plates removed with empty drinks on the table and no one asking if we wanted another - whoever owns this place lost a fortune in sales this night. Finally approached this girl about her behaviour and she sneered at me rather than apologise! 5 minutes later she was chatting with her friend again!!! Wouldn't go back.

The lighting is really nice. The service was okay, not great but not bad either. It was rather unremarkable. When we first arrived, there were a ton of guys there watching the UFC fight - if you're into UFC, this appears to be the place to go. We started with drinks, I ordered a prosecco and the bf got a beer. The beers didn't have prices on them, but we were still surprised when we got the bill and the beer was $15 - almost as much as my dinner. I'm not sure if that's normal or if I'm still getting adjusted to New Zealand prices, but when my boyfriend asked the kiwis at work, they said it's definitely not normal. I ordered the vegan buddha bowl (was really excited to see a vegan option on the menu at a pub that isn't chips) and my boyfriend ordered the fish and chips he was so excited about. The food came out pretty quickly. Mine was fresh but lacked flavor - it became obvious really quickly that the chef who invented this dish is not vegan nor do they know any vegans. Vegan food is more than just vegetables without dressing ;) Nonetheless, I did enjoy the mashed sweet potato in the middle and I was very happy to be able to eat something healthy at a pub! My boyfriend was very happy with his fish and chips and it came out looking perfect. All in all, the Flying Moa is a standard pub. I do hear that they have a good trivia night which I would be interested to try out, and their drinks list looks enticing - I wouldn't mind trying some of those jam jars and cocktails.

I only had drinks there on Saturday night but I did see nice looking pizzas coming out served on boards. They looked nice. The bar has the works. Service was friendly, a little casual but that's OK. :) There is what seems to be a kid zone, a separate area for kids to colour, play, sit on cushions and be away from the grown ups. There are windows out the back overlooking the Mt Albert train tracks. There is no TV so no way to watch games but again, OK for some, maybe not others. All in all a nice place to go locally and worth a try to support local Mt Albert businesses.
