So, you have a girlfriend, OR maybe you have a wife....If you do, you know neither of them listens or takes any instruction from you...EVER. They love you, and you love them, but you just don't jive when it comes to giving life-changing advice, even if someone's safety is at stake. This WAS my dilemma....until yesterday.
I have to give my wife a lot of credit for giving it the ol' college try, and taking up "scary" mountain biking. Unfortunately, while my wife is a real gun on the road, mountain bike escapades were typically limited to, "I don't like drop-offs"..."That's not a drop-off"..."I don't like that, then...", "I don't like you for bringing me here. You know I don't LIKE this stuff...", and you see the direction this is taking. Bad. Like an over-shot switchback....
Now, I was an accredited cycling coach in the past. I've coached on two continents. I have coached women exclusively, and I've coached co-ed. I have R-O-C-K-E-D. My athletes have R-O-C-K-E-D. However, I just couldn't get through to my wife. It wasn't her fault, and it wasn't mine. We just couldn't jive.
Finally, we also have a BIG race coming up. If you've raced, you know that most people are in a hurry...to be slow. So, it tends to be a lot of pushing and shoving, and yelling. If you are not comfortable on a bike, behavior like this tends to unsettle you further, and you spend the whole morning in everyone's way, including your own. So, since she doesn't listen to ME, I decided I would go looking for someone she MIGHT listen to.
See, the thing is, my wife DOES listen...just not to ME. So, I decided that maybe I could find someone she WOULD listen to, and this brought me to the door of Tahoe Mountain Guides....
I jumped on the web and started having a look around, and by chance ran into TMG. Turns out they have a womens' clinic coming up and I wanted to get details, and talk about one-on-one too. Obviously, as an ex-coach, I am picky and wanted to make sure this wasn't just going to be a half-hour at the pump-track and a sandwich. I wrote them and promptly went back to shopping for bike parts. A few days later, and I'm thinking "Must have been an old site"... But, just like an ex, Ken got in touch with me right when I was finally beginning to forget about it. ;)
He was immediately cool, and I felt right at home with his whole vibe. I told him our problems, wishes, and upcoming race with resulting deadlines. He understood exactly where I was coming from, with the listening thing as well as our timeline, and said he had a great guide who could work through it with her. Not only that, but he also got super creative with a tailored solution for us.
See, his first thought for guide didn't work out because that guy was headed out with three dudes. Don't know if you've ridden with a group of just dudes, but you can just imagine being the only girl. It's about as comfortable as going to the bathroom together. What is super cool though, is that Ken was honest with me, and invested in our best-interests as opposed to the money. SUPER COOL.
So, he says, "Hey, let me jump off the phone here, and make a call, and I'll call you back." Cool. Ken calls me back immediately, tells me he's got a killer guy lined up, and that he can get us in next day too (yesterday).
We show up (staff is awesome, BTW), and spot-on 10:30 (appointed time), Tom rolls up and says, "Kristi", like, even if my wife WASN'T Kristi, she was now!
Now, I think Tom is typically a TMG guide, built to put the hurt on Bay area guys who come up and think they're tough. Believe me, the way he looked, I'm glad I ended up riding off in a different direction! Guy is built like a fire hydrant. Harder than woodpecker lips!
So, we give him the back-story, that really we're here for skills drills. Tom takes it in stride, and you'd never know he's redoing the math in his head. He disappears for 2 seconds, comes back with keys to the van, and says, "OK, let's go." This is in addition to giving ME some great trail advice, so I have something to do while they're gone (NEVER stalk your wife's class. NEVER.).
Here's the most important piece. My wife came back with the BIGGEST smile you've EVER seen. She was super stoked and telling me about a whole bunch of stuff she had ridden, and using a bunch of terms she didn't know before. Tom was equally stoked, and they were talking about homework and practice, etc. It was AMAZING. They wouldn't shut up! It was exactly what we were both hoping for. Additionally, seeing the video she took, and Tom's patience and skill translation to her in it, I was extremely impressed by his knowledge and "bedside manner" and re-doing sections to land the skill. Long story short, we're thrilled about this decision. Tom made my wife safer, faster, and most importantly, he enabled her to actually find enjoyment in this new sport. So, if that's what YOU are looking for, you owe it to yourself, or your loved one, to give these guys a shot. Period.
Thanks SO MUCH all at TMG!!! read more
