It is a nine hole course that can be played back to back for 18. No major water hazards, but the woods will keep anybody, but a straight driver, searching. One of my favorite features, however is the clubhouse. Yes there is a pro shop and you can get some basic refreshments but what you MUST do after your game is sit in one of the many rocking chairs that bedeck the wrap around porch, marvel at the decades of markings in the old wooden floor from years of spikes trodding on them and enjoy the spectacular view of plum lake!

Such a BEAUTIFUL place to play golf. So well maintained…read more Greens definitely have some undulations, but are quick, and roll well. Fairways are lush and wide enough to be fair. Balls off line will be lost in the woods in a lot of cases, but there are generous landing areas. Great place. Worst part of the day was the bar wasn't open when we finished at 11:15 so no after golf cocktails lol. Get out and play it.... you won't be sorry.

The woman at the counter was not all that friendly..it just might be her nature. The grass was mediocre. They put styrofoam in the flag holes and if the last guy didnt put them in properly..you might miss out your hole in one. The course manager was quite friendly.

We booked online and confirmed at a price of $50. As you can see in the attached picture, it shows $50 due at course. When we arrived at the course they told us the price went up that very day and they would not honor our confirmed price of $50, but instead would have to pay $90 if we wanted to golf. They understood we booked for $50, but they would not honor it, due to their new "dynamic pricing". The second picture explains that. This isn't about the money. This is about the principle. What if our hotel did that? We book for $100 per night, and when we get there they tell us the price went up and it would be $200? Dynamic pricing sounds a lot like surge pricing for Uber. The major difference, Uber is clear you're paying surge pricing up front. They don't quote you at a $50 ride and when the driver pulls up says, "just kidding, that will be $90". If you want to avoid a bait and switch, avoid Trout Lake Golf Club.

Unbeknownst to us, the course is undergoing a massive renovation project and several of the holes were significantly shortened due to the renovation work. No mention of this on their website. Staff only mentioned some renovation work AFTER we had paid. Even though we did not get to experience the entire course (courtesy of several of the holes having temporary tees in the fairway, in each case, about 150 to 200 yards ahead of where the tee boxes normally are), we paid full price. When we called to complain, they told us all tees and greens are accessible (a false statement) and no discount would be offered. Golf courses typically provide advance notice of greens being aerated and usually offer a discount when greens are aerated. Any course (other than Trout Lake, apparently), will most definitely provide its customers with advance notice of massive renovation work and offer a discount. Trout Valley apparently has no problem pulling a bait and switch on its customers - this was an unfortunate experience. Sadly, we will not return. It's a great course, but customer service is an afterthought.

Found a breath of fresh air in Mellen. Yelp showed me some possibilities in town but they were no…read morelonger open. Some nice ladies in a closed restaurant directed me to the golf course country club. Advising I don't have to be a member and the food is great as it usually is at golf courses. The club is charming with a narrow road that looks to be the original except paved over leading to a couple of ample parking lots. The dining area was empty and the manager friendly as he explained the two specials and gave me a menu. There is a full bar and a small selection of items for dining. The special was $7 and has to be the bargain of the area. Plenty of chicken wings, coleslaw and potato salad. There is Wi Fi but not for me as this northern Wi., region has limited service from phone companies. There are other items on the menu I'd like to try such as the Milwaukee Brat. But that will be a future trip.

Or you might feel your heart bursting for the sheer beauty. Or maybe that was just me. I'm the crappiest golfer ever but I was hanging around with people who know how to hit the ball. But it was no skin off my teeth to join the crowd and inspect the local wildlife on the course. Not good: No beverage cart girls Not good: Overgrown weeds in spots that obviously began life as landscaped spots Good: Wildflowers!!!! Wildflowers as far as they eye can see! Very Good: Views of the greatest Great Lake of them all. True story: I saw a deer. I inadvertently scared some baby birds. And I singlehandedly rescued a turtle on the 15th hole.
