I got my first guitar in July 1960. I've bought and sold 1,000's of guitars., amps, drums,…read morekeyboards, etc... No exaggeration. I owned a 1,500 square foot musical instrument shop from 1998 to 2007. So I know equipment. I've visited Skip's several times over the past few decades. But my last visit was long enough ago that it was at the former Watt Ave location. This new store is visually impressive. Plenty of space which gives the room a majestic feel. It's dramatically lighted. The overhead music system is not obnoxiously loud. It's a fun place to browse. The inventory is all good quality. Every item is a real musical instrument, not a junky toy. No Amazon type crap here. The 5 staff members I interacted with were all friendly and helpful. I stopped in with my family to buy some Xmas gifts for the grandchildren and a few cables for myself. I pre-shopped the items on the Skip's website. The items were in stock. We bought a mini electric guitar for the 6 year old grand niece who actually knows already how to play some basic chords. We also got her a small amplifier, cables, guitar strap... Everything she will need to start her musical journey. Pricing is pretty standard MSRP. I know the price structure at wholesale and retail level and was not going to haggle for a discount out of respect. Profit margin after all the business expenses is meager. There's a high riser stage for in store events & concerts. There's also programs when students perform. Great experience for students to begin public performances (Where, hopefully, they get prepared for paychecks when they graduate to playing at bar gigs, weddings, birthdays and maybe even the big time (if they work really, really hard)). If you or you little virtuoso wants some gear I highly recommend that you shop here rather than at Guitar Center. Shop local, support a family owned business rather than a corporation.

I started guitar lessons as a beginner two years ago with Sean. I take a 30 minute lesson each…read moreweek from Sean. I will cut to the chase: I will grow old with Sean as my 'gee-tar' guru. I am very pleased with my progress during these last two years. I have had years of piano lessons and voice lessons from a number of excellent teachers. I rank Sean among the best of them despite being the youngest. I think his relative youth is actually a wonderful asset. His enthusiasm for guitar music and performance certainly shows. He always understands and relates the difficulties I face to his own experiences and quickly suggests proven ways to address those issues. I believe it is because he is not that far removed from his own learning experiences. It is always comforting to know that my issues are not unique, and just as importantly, I now have proven methods to overcome those difficulties. I also want to mention that Sean is extremely attentive during lessons and very quick to catch my errors or issues, and suggest corrective remedies. As a consequence, I have been able to make steady progress during the last two years. As a person, I found Sean to be level headed, well rounded and mature beyond his years. I always enjoy conversations with him about diverse subjects. It is an important consideration because some light diversion can restore balance when the learning gets too intense. His teaching style is mellow, sometimes funny, even though he is direct and exacting. So I always look forward to the learning experience instead of fearing it. After two years, I can now perform a number of my favorite songs to my own satisfaction. I am in the process of putting together my first performance portfolio, and will perform at an Open Mic with Sean in a week. In summary, if you are serious about learning or improving your guitar skills, you will do very well by engaging Sean as your teacher.

I joined the Sacramento Community Guitar Orchestra to see if that might be a way to learn. It was not for me, but I was impressed by the professionalism of the conductor, Sean O'Connor. He has such a calm spirit and really has a natural way of teaching. He also has an excellent musical education and background. Our son keeps improving his skills and we owe that to his experience at Music Lab. He also took an interest in guitar and bass. He first started on guitar and then moved to bass lessons. His bass teacher is also incredible. I think he could play and teach just about any instrument. He is very calm and intentional with his lessons. He is another good fit for our son. One of our favorite things about Music Lab, beyond the lessons, are the semi-annual music showcases that they put on for their students and their guests. It's the perfect way to showcase the students' new skills and highlight their growth through the years. The owners, teachers, and staff are all so supportive. Music Lab also puts on great summer camps with fun and talented teachers. Last year, our son did intermediate drum camp, and this year, he tried a musical theater camp. I love that there are so many areas for him to expand his talents! I even got brave and took voice lessons. My teacher was very patient and talented. I learned so much and improved my skills, too. I can't say enough good things about our experience at Music Lab!
