Love the cilantro and raw onions on the side with a spoon so I can control the amounts per taco. Avocado slices, grilled onions, and melted cheese added a depth of flavor that I've never experienced before eating tacos! The steak was approaching slightly oversalted, which helped maximize the flavor within the meat as well. This place will be my go-to if I ever need to visit the DMV again! read more

I was in a taco slump! I thought they had raised prices, but it was just the food delivery apps gouging. For $12 you get 5 bomb ass street tacos of beef or pastor! I went in and asked for a beer while I waited for my to go order. They gave me charro beans and limes. Dude! I've only been to the East Fwy location, but I'm sure all spots have great service too. Highly recommend. The tacos are so good I don't think I've had anything else on the menu. The employees are always nice and I'm so glad this particular location bounced back from the covid shutdowns. So I'm from out of town and I travel to Houston once in a while .I stay in a nearby Hotel. I think it should be mentioned before I write the review that I am Caucasian. So for about the past year, I've been out in and out of this restaurant great food great people not a complaint in the world. English is not very good but I can get around that. It's authentic Mexican food and I love it until today. Yesterday I went in there and ordered no problem. I always hit at the same place. I had the same waitress. I'm never rude. I always leave a good tip. I'll leave 20% because it's so cheap. I feel bad about leaving a lower percentage so I always leave 20% until today. Today I went over and I had coffee from McDonald's. I still had the cup and handed it to the waitress and I said can I have some coffee she gave me kind of a scowl. I asked her is it OK? I just wanted to refill it up top it off that's it so she said yeah that's OK. I said OK and I said I'd like that and a beer. It was about 11:30 in the morning, I had work the night before and I was going to bed so she came back over. I ordered the burrito. I drank the beer and I waited for her to come back and I was gonna get some water she never came back. She got the empty bear bottle and the plate and didn't even look me in the face. It was kind of weird. I could tell something was wrong for the minute. I walked in the restaurant and she gave me the look about the coffee so after I ate the food, the burrito which was delicious. I waited waited waited. She never came to my table. I finally just got up. I went to check out. She finally came to check me out and I didn't leave a tip I think maybe for the first time in my life and my skin color is the only thing I can figure out why because I haven't done anything the day before when I came in I remarked that she had lost weight and she looked very nice and she kinda laughed and giggled and said thank you and I left it at that and I never said another word and today I couldn't even get her to come to my table, except to deliver the food. It's really too bad. I hate writing bad reviews, but I can't let this slide. This was purposely bad service. This wasn't a bad day. This wasn't. She was busy and she just forgot about me. There were only me and one more table in the whole restaurant and she was the only waitress working great food, though really great food. this was the location in East Houston. read more

I'll start off by saying how much I love Mexican food. I love it so much I learned to speak Spanish just so I could order my food more efficiently in Mexico. This helped me here too, it was so authentic that the servers don't speak English. My beautiful latina friend told me about this place, she said that it was the most authentic mexican food place that you could eat at in the city. I'm not going to say I didn't believe her, but most stuff I just need to see for myself. I would like to confess that I am now a firm believer in Taco del Julio and all the glory of authenticity. They win! From the beans (I don't even eat beans like that) to the jalapeños, and especially everything in between made me feel like I was back in the streets of Puerto Vallarta going from market to market tasting the city one bite at a time. I came to this restaurant unknowingly, since it was the only thing open at the time. After a long day on the road, I didn't want anymore fast food and figured some Mexican food would be nice. Upon arrival the restaurant was empty, however it quickly filled up with other travelers from a tourist bus. The service was friendly yet slow. I decided to order a pirata combo, which included red rice, beans and basically two steak quesadillas with avocado. I was quickly disappointed when I took a bite of the rice and it was cold. I proceeded to try the beans and to my surprise they were hot, however too salty, to the point of being inedible. The quesadillas were basic with flavor, since the steak was not seasoned. The only good thing about my meal was the green guacamole salsa. I didn't have to ask for salsa since the bottle was already on the table when I arrived. I love spicy and found this to be mild. Overall, the meal was unmemorable, I wish I would of just stopped at fast food joint instead. Also, skip out on using the restroom they are unkept. read more

I've eaten at this location twice. The first time was better than today's experience. I ordered enchiladas, a gringa and a limonada the first time. Good food and service, but the limonada tasted like Minute Maid lemonade with lemon squeezed into it. Gross. Okay. So, the second time...worse. Three friends and I got breakfast. One of my buddies ordered a coffee with his food and only sipped it once. I asked why he wasn't drinking it and he said it tasted like lemon. I laughed and grabbed the cup. When I sniffed it, I felt bad. It smelled like a cup of tea w/lemon. I ordered the chilaquiles, which were ummm alright. I also order the americano. My excuse is that I'm eating for two right now lol The pancakes were tasteless and the eggs were okay. I was stuffed, but the kind of stuffed where you feel like it was a waste to waste space in your stomach for such a terrible meal. Love the "Regia Burger"..My Husband ordered the "Ta-combo", which is two tacos and rice and beans. He ate half of my burger and said it was so good, he would rather order the burger next time. TERRIBLE!!!!!! The food is absolutely DISGUSTINGGGGGG. Horrible cashier, nice waiter but what's the point if the food is repulsive?! I will NEVER COME HERE AGAIN!!!!!!! The food had no flavor. The dishes were filthy. They took spoiled grated cheese and melted it to call it "melted queso." The cheese had a refrigerator taste and smell, it was super duper greasy and weird. The enchiladas had a green sauce on it that was totally awful, I couldn't even eat it. The shredded chicken was so dry, I thought it might've been microwaved from previous days of being cooked. The booth we sat on was broken and uncomfortable to sit in. Thanks to the never-ending construction near my job, I was forced to take a detour and saw the sign for this place. After doing a bit of research I found that this is actually a mini-chain all around Houston, which was good news. I'm as "gringa" as they get but I've never had a problem venturing out to the many authentic Mexican places in the area; however, most of the food was just not good and many of them have gone out of business since--owning multiple locations was a good sign. In fact, for about two years I was on a mission to find authentic bistec tacos (with cilantro, onion, etc). I decided to try this restaurant today and to my delight, this is the place I have been dreaming of. The menu is rather small and simple compared to others, but they also get props for that. I think it's great when a place knows what they do best and they stick to it! Upon arriving you seat yourself. A friendly waitress will take your drink order, then bring each person a bowl of *delicious* charro beans -- no chips here. They also bring a small bowl of fresh onion and cilantro so you can top your food with as little or as much as you like. This is also great, because personally I like a wee bit of onion and a pound of cilantro. Two of us ordered the Thursday special (one each of 3 different tacos: pirata, gringa and something else I can't pronounce). I had practiced saying " Dos Juevos Especial" before heading out, but thankfully our waitress understood English so I didn't have to embarrass myself. Husband tried the enchiladas (chicken, not cheese) and he scarfed them down, along with two tacos from our plates, but was way more impressed with the tacos than enchiladas. I have to say I think the plain bistec (pirata) was my favorite taco of the three, though they were all good and I would definitely get them again. To be more specific, the three tacos are a "regular" size, not miniature (although I do believe they have those as well) and two, along with the charro beans, were definitely enough to fill up myself and my lunch buddy which is how my husband also ended up getting two to enjoy. The bistec was tender, juicy and cut into small pieces as oppossed to large chunks of grainy, chewy beef that you might find at other places. The fresh salsas provided were excellent (I like green), and who can go wrong with a bowl of cilantro?? The part that makes them melt-in-your-mouth amazing though, is that the tortillas are grilled. Like a quesadilla, without 800 extra calories of cheese. Mmm. We'll definitely be returning. Also, for $1.99 complete your Mexican taco experience with an ice cold coke in a bottle. I'm so glad I ventured out to this place and I'm so glad it's about 30 seconds from my job. read more

great food, good waitstaff, HORRIBLE CASHIER. A "Gabriela" works the cashier and she keeps the place feeling like a bar. She sings along to her favorite songs on the radio or tv, loud and obnoxiously; so loud that you can't even concentrate on locating an item from the menu. I experienced Gabriela laughing with her colleagues, eating in the lobby, loudly and rudely singing to random songs, and even going as far as to pointing and signaling out the table I was eating. She threw indirect remarks towards me the whole time after I asked my waitress to ask her to keep it down. After the waitress asked her to keep it down, she made it a point to make sure that I had a horrible time. She made indirect remarks towards topics in my own private conversations, as is she was voicing an opinion to what I was talking about. Her obnoxious attitude made my stomach knot up. I am a patron, a paying customer. I understand this isn't a five star restaurant, but I also understand this place is not a bar. I love the food, but as long as People like Gabriela are employed, I will not be dining here or in any other don Julio again. there's a tostada Regia down the road, so someone needs to tell Gabriela that people have a choice when it comes to dining. I asked to speak with a manager, but I was told there wasn't any kind of supervising agent on duty. I asked for a to go box as soon as my food came in, and decided it was best to leave. I have never gone to a restaurant and be treated soo badly that I didn't finish the dinin experience there. Fast and friendly service. The food is typical of what you would find in Houston. No chips though you get a small bowl of charro beans. The sad part is they charge you if you ask again for beans.
