El Borrego Taqueria - FAjita

There is no streetside taqueria in the Edgebrook taco scene that is more famous than El Borrego…read more (#1) While other taco trucks are closing at 3AM, they remain open 24 hours a day and have more staff preparing food than anywhere else. Other places operate as a cart or a truck, but El Borrego is operating out of full fledged bus in a church parking lot. With bright lights and more parking spaces, people flock here more than the rest of the competition. Just sitting in the lot and observing will see plenty of in and out traffic, as appetites and people are buzzing at all hours of the night and day. They even have a handwashing station, which is pretty awesome. Overall, the food is solid. While I've been known to rock a barbacoa and chicharron taco here and there, I especially appreciate the fact they have carne deshebrada (shredded meat), molleja (sweetbreads), longaniza (spicy pork sausage), and milanesa (breaded cutlet) meats. Between 5AM-11AM daily, they also offer breakfast tacos. Site note: I appreciate that they have a handwashing station, despite not having any place to sit (#2). There are also Mexican style hamburgers, piratas + gringa super tacos, tostadas, gorditas, sopes, burritos, and quesadillas. They all have a place for cravings sake, but don't supplant what's available taco wise. A woman constantly shouting orders from the window of the truck. This is 100% part of the experience and should be embraced at all costs. That being said, a lot of people are still confused because they can't (always) understand what she's saying. At $2.50 for corn, $2.75 for flour tacos, it has become standard pricing in the area. It's not the cheapest or the tastiest tacos, but seeing as other competitors have masked their prices, I am appreciative of the transparency. Charro beans are no longer offered for free, at $1 a cup. It is strictly cash only. With bright lights and more parking spaces, people flock here more than the rest of the competition. It is cash only. They get a point for consistency and another nod for longevity, which says a lot in a place that is as saturated as Houston. __________ (#1) For locals arguing noting Taconmadre, they've since become a full fledged restaurant with a drive-thru. Keyword here is "streetside" i.e. de la calle~ (#2) Everyone eats inside or on their cars.

The corn tortillas are very crispy and greasy, as expected, and the meat was very tender and cheesy. I enjoy the array of sauces and toppings that are brought out with the tacos. The restaurant is very clean and has a nice ambiance. Although this is probably controversial, I preferred the salsas to the birria consomé.

It's Pearland so parking won't be a problem. After perusing the menu, I couldn't say no to the pizzadilla. I'll be back to that in the moment. Service (4.5/5): Pretty much what you hope for. A seamless ordering experience, the food was ready when promised, and no issues arose. One thing I like is that they go above and beyond in providing you with extra limes, and a generous heap of onions, cilantro, and veggies. Ambiance (3/5): Pretty much a standard small Mexican taco joint. Nothing to write home about. Drinks (4.5/5): I love agua frescas and they have them here with 3-4 flavors to choose from. I went with a large pepino (cucumber) agua fresca. Delicious and refreshing. Food (3/5): This is interesting. The pizzadilla sounded amazing. Think of it as a huge quesadilla of sorts, served in a pizza box You can choose your meat. Naturally, I went with the birria which is served with a generous portion of consome. All sounds good, right? Here's where things fell apart. The quesadilla had an overwhelming amount of cheese and an underwhelming amount of birria meat. This is coming from a guy who absolutely loves cheese and feels like it makes anything better. I think this is the first time in my life I'm saying otherwise. There was so much cheese that it overpowered the dish and you could barely taste the birria. Which shouldn't be the case as the meat is the star of the show. Maybe the kitchen made a mistake. Or maybe their ratio is highly off on this dish. Either way, disappointing as I thought this spot would crush it.

They were sitting outside of a cheer competition which was a little bit of a questionable choice because of the suggestive nature, but my kid is young enough that it went over her head so did not concern me. The lines were insane so we went to the listed website on their Yelp page to look at the menu and the prices. We were happy with the selections and the price so waited in the line. 45 minutes in line and we get close enough to see the menu on the truck and was super irritated that the prices they were charging at the event were significantly higher than what is listed on their online menu. SIGNIFICANTLY. The mini nachos are on their website menu for $11 and they were charging $18 (a $7 markup!) . The tacos were listed at $15 and we were charged $18 (a $3 markup) and the quesadilla was listed as $8 on the website and we were charged $12 ($4 markup).... so we were charged $18 more than their website menu would have us paying. I was not going to get out of line after nearly an hour and stand in another long line with our limited time so just had to deal with it. We ordered the Pink Tacos, the Pink Quesadilla, and Nachos. We waited at least another 30 minutes for our food and I'm pretty sure the nachos had been done for most of that time because the chips had the texture of oatmeal and would disintegrate as soon as you tried picking one up. The tacos were cold but the quesadilla was warm so guessing food was just made in random order. Everything was just ok flavor wise. None of us finished our meals, ate about half and tossed the rest. So 5/5 for the fun, cheeky vibe. 0/5 for the sneaky prices versus their online menu. 1/5 for the food. It was cold and lacked flavor
