I'd been hearing so many people talk about Tacos 1986 that when I happened to walk by one by the pier, I walked in without hesitation. I was here on a Sunday in the late afternoon. There were only a few other customers there aside from me. I ordered a combination of two tacos with rice and beans and asked the really friendly cashier which his favorites were and he said he liked carnitas and beef so I chose those. The restaurant itself is on the smaller side with seating is either at a counter or long communal table. There's a salsa bar with limes, salsa, etc. Both of my tacos were excellent but in my opinion the beef was better than the pork taco. The rice and beans were good, too. This a great spot for a quick bite when you're out and about. It's also close to the Santa Monica pier and very affordable parking garages. read more

The one thing that keeps this from being a full 5 stars is presentation and cleanliness, especially with the sauces. Everything tends to come out a bit messy, which makes it harder to serve cleanly at events. With a little more attention to how the sauces are packaged and presented, it would elevate the experience so much. Tragic experience here. Does not compare to the Westwood location at all. The staff was friendly but the food could not have been worse. The curbside pickup offered in toast is not actually an option which led to some scrambling to try to get our order. The toast app also offers weird choices for toppings on your tacos making the "default" option actually an entirely plain, naked taco. Our food was cold and devastating. We will not be back sadly :( read more

This little taco spot is located right by the beach on Colorado Ave, and is really convenient after spending the day in Santa Monica or watching the sunset. The staff was helpful, and I ordered a mulita with Al Pastor and a Carne Asada Taco. Prices were great, and it was just enough to fill me up. Both were delicious, especially the Pastor meat. And they have a salsa bar which I LOVE. I will forsure be back, this will be my new go to taco spot after the beach! read more

If you need a quick bite in downtown SM this is a good option. Wandered in at 1pm and noticed the Breakfast Menu said 'until 12 (after we ordered I saw people getting item from that menu, so maybe they do have eggs after 12, I'll have to go back and see). So my BF and I shared a huge Chicken Burrito. Super juicy, it was running down our arms, not a ton of chicken in the burrito, what was there had very mild spice with a lot of flavor, lots of white beans for protein, excellent sauce. We thoroughly enjoyed the flavor and if we need a quick meal near downtown Santa Monica, we'd go here again. Homemade lemonade was perfect, not too sweet. read more

However this place, I eat every single thing. Love their salsa selections. Service is fast here and you aren't waiting too long for food. Only con would be that there isn't any seats. Tacos are 3.75 but come with guac - meats are seasoned and cooked well and laid ok top of a nice tortilla. They have their own take on al pastor that's decent. Burrito at $13 is a bit small and lacking vs what you'll find at a street stand, but tastes solid. They have sauces on the side you can get - orange has a decent kick and the red is well rounded. These tacos are tasty juicy and authentic, I tried other places and I can say they have the best tacos in the city and also have the best taco Al pastor, the pastor is well seasoned which makes it juicy and flavorful it's so good compared to other places I've tried, the only recommendation I have is adding pineapple to give them extra flavor! but even without it is very tasty and yummy. If you are from NY these tacos are like Tacos #1, the best of the best! Came to this place during my vacation in Santa Monica and wanted this place to be good so bad as I was so excited to get some Mexican food but unfortunately it was such a terrible experience with service and food. The cashier was just extremely weird. She was helping someone when I showed up to pick up my order. She asked me what could she help me with while still attending the other customer, I responded in English "I'm here to pick up a order, and followed to speak in Spanish and said "It says it's ready in the app" and she looked away and didn't say anything to me & continued helping the person. She clearly spoke Spanish since she had a very strong accent & also was speaking to the cooks in Spanish, that whole interaction was so unnecessary and uncomfortable, she finished with the customer & followed to do other things while I was just standing there waiting to get her attention and receive my order. I waited but then, I just asked her about my order and she followed to give it to me, I didn't appreciate getting ignored just because she felt like it.. Now: Food was soooo bad. We ordered Steak Vampiros and it tasted as if they were 2 days old, the salsa and just everything tasted so nasty. I ordered the vampire. It was perfect. I was actually surprised. The carne asada was so perfect. The meat was juicy and well seasoned. They could give you a little bit more. The al pastor was also very good. I would pay for double meat, though. Their spicy sals is very delicious. Not hot. But very delicious. Must try it. The guys are very friendly and fast. And I DESPERATELY want to gatekeep the fact they have an addictive horchata cold brew they make in house! It is my favorite cup of coffee in Santa Monica right now. Ahh,Tacos 1986. What can I say? They sure have interesting food. But what I really like is that you can find a special surprise, in the form of glass, in your burrito. It's really something when you take a bite out of your meal and have it cut your mouth and throat on the way down. But really, really, what I love even more about this place is that when you let the staff know that you found this special surprise in your food, they respond nonchalantly with the following " Oh yea, some glass broke over the counter. I guess it fell into the meat." And don't make any intent to get rid of possibly contaminated meat. Oh, top notch service for sure.
