    Chips & guacamole

This is a solid option for quick-service tacos in the heart of Santa Monica. The menu is simple and affordable. My food came out soon after ordering. There were limited seats and some stand up counters to eat at. I appreciated that there was a stocked salsa bar with a variety of salsas accompanied by onions, cilantro, and limes to elevate your tacos. I ordered the quesadilla combo with mushrooms as my protein. The quesadillas were essentially just tacos with a good amount of yummy melted cheese. The tortillas were fresh and held up well. The mushrooms were surprisingly very flavorful and juicy. The combo came with rice and beans, which were just ok by themselves. The chips & guacamole were interesting. The chips were huge (full on tostada size) and way too toasted to the point of being unenjoyable. The guacamole was average and could have been more seasoned. I got the horchata to drink, which wasn't too sweet and had a true cinnamon flavor.

I stopped by here while visiting the pier and really enjoyed it. It's a very simple ordering process with the kiosk, and food comes out in 5-10 min. The corn tortilla tasted great and the meat and cheese was so yummy. I recommend if you're in the area

First time coming to this place and I'm happy I did fresh tortillas along with fresh ingredients. Everything was prepped to order. Pricing is fair for fresh food and customer service is great. Definitely recommend 10/10. I'll be back again

We spotted this place while heading back to our car after hanging out in Santa Monica and decided to stop in for a quick bite. It's definitely a casual, no-frills spot that feels perfect for grabbing food on the go rather than a sit-down meal. The tacos were tasty and made with corn tortillas, which we appreciated. Everything came out quickly, especially considering how busy it was when we stopped by. Overall a solid option if you're in the area and want something fast, flavorful, and casual. Clearly a popular spot, and I can see why.

MUY SUCIO. Deberían mantenerlo más limpio. También para ser tacos tardan demasiado... tienen solo una persona que tarda años haciendo el burrito del de enfrente ... mejoren esos taqueros. Fuera de eso OK pero para el precio... meh.

I'd been hearing so many people talk about Tacos 1986 that when I happened to walk by one by the pier, I walked in without hesitation. I was here on a Sunday in the late afternoon. There were only a few other customers there aside from me. I ordered a combination of two tacos with rice and beans and asked the really friendly cashier which his favorites were and he said he liked carnitas and beef so I chose those. The restaurant itself is on the smaller side with seating is either at a counter or long communal table. There's a salsa bar with limes, salsa, etc. Both of my tacos were excellent but in my opinion the beef was better than the pork taco. The rice and beans were good, too. This a great spot for a quick bite when you're out and about. It's also close to the Santa Monica pier and very affordable parking garages.

Absolutely amazing! Love the food. Reasonable price. Everything was made from scratch. Staff was awesome! We will absolutely go back if in the area. We did the burrito and taco combo

Was looking for a spot in Santa Monica with food that's quick and affordable, and stumbled upon Tacos 1986. This little taco spot is located right by the beach on Colorado Ave, and is really convenient after spending the day in Santa Monica or watching the sunset. The staff was helpful, and I ordered a mulita with Al Pastor and a Carne Asada Taco. Prices were great, and it was just enough to fill me up. Both were delicious, especially the Pastor meat. And they have a salsa bar which I LOVE. I will forsure be back, this will be my new go to taco spot after the beach!

They'd been open maybe an hour and there was one other person there picking up an order. First time here. The guy at the counter was very friendly, asked if I knew what I wanted, and I told him no and asked what's popular. He recommended three tacos so I went with that. He never asked about tortillas so they came out on corn. I'm not the biggest fan of corn tortillas, but after I sat down, I looked at the soda cup, and saw "handmade corn AND flour tortillas." Would've gone flour if I'd known that was even an option. My bad for not asking, but also a great opportunity to let a new customer know it's an option. Food came out fast. Three tacos, chips, a couple sides of salsa. All the meat was cold. Not fridge cold, but noticeably below room temperature. I'm sitting five feet from the kitchen in a place that opened 30 minutes ago. How is that even possible? The non-beef tacos were seasoned well, both of them, that part was fine. The beef was where it fell apart. Every single bite had pieces I literally couldn't chew through, and I kept pulling chunks out of my mouth. After my second bite I just stopped going back for more. For over $4 a taco, that quality is atrocious. Very fast if you need something quick to eat. First and last time for me.

So classic, such a constant neighborhood food hub in the area…read more One of my first creative jobs (at $75 a day) was in a commercial production and motion design studio in a Frank Gehry loft on nearby 12th street. The work was tedious, the people often annoying, but the learning real. And I would duck out to grab a burrito at TPF at lunch because the walk there and back was almost meditative. TPF speaks to an earlier version of Santa Monica, before Silicon Beach happened. When Dogtown was still in transition, the commercial and industrial spaces still plentiful, and the creativity flowed. I usually get a chicken burrito. It's great. The space hasn't changed. And is never crowded. But you see people popping in, and you can tell that maybe they were having a slow day at home, and that a little homestyle Mexican comfort food is part of their ritual. Their salsas are incredible and I've never tasted similar ones elsewhere. If you're looking for a simple, satisfying, no-frills Mexican experience, this is it.

I don't think a burrito should cost more than $20 ever. If it does, it should rock my socks. Unfortunately this place checks neither box. I much prefer the nachos which is never the case at a truly legit spot. And also - why so many onions? I like onions as much as the next guy but I feel like they think I'm Stanley Yelnats from Holes when I go here. Absolute onion bomb in a tortilla. I don't get it.

However, El Primo has recently HUMBLED me. I have to give credit where credit is due and El Primo managed to slide in my number 1 spot for best tacos in LA - I am truly impressed. Of course, I always opt for carne asada and the meat here is just so tender and flavorful especially when paired with their salsa which has the perfect amount of spice and flavor. As a major pineapple fan, I understand it's more traditional to add that with al pastor but I add it onto my carne asada tacos and it is so yummy. Their pineapple is freshly cut right in front of you and is my favorite aspect of this vendor as I know not all vendors have it. Lastly, let's be clear that not all horchata is created equally but El Primo has superior horchata. The amount of milkiness and cinnamon is absolute perfection as I've had some watery horchatas in the past, so make sure you grab yourself a horchata while you're here. As someone who lives in the valley, despite recently discovering this spot a few weeks ago I find myself driving out to Venice a lot lately just for these tacos because they are just THAT GOOD and also very cheap. Just make sure you bring cash or have Zelle and enjoy the food here because it is phenomenal.

They're not the bargain like other places, but I know the quality is usually good here. Tuesday tacos are five dollars each. That's fine. We asked for some chips and salsa and the waiter told us they were three dollars extra so I said that was fine. Please bring them. So they bring out this nice basket of chips which was Ok but it came with very little salsa. So I asked the person who brought the chips and salsa out , could you please bring a little bit more salsa. So he brings a 1 ounce silver cup of some additional salsa. Later, We asked for the bill. When they bring you the little handheld computer, it's very difficult to see the breakdown of what everything cost. I'll remind you that this large basket of chips with a little amount of salsa is three dollars for but for the same amount of salsa without anything else they charged us an additional four dollars , they say it's a 4 ounce side order of salsa on the bill I received afterwards . This is complete B S !! You're taking advantage of a situation and if I would've seen the receipt like you should've brought to the table originally I would have spoken up about it that you're taking advantage of your customers. The other thing I noticed was when he handed me the tablet the waiter personally puts the checkmark at 22% instead of 20% or let me figure it out which I think shows greed. The bottom line is try treating your customers like you would like to be treated and not taken advantage of!
