Since many Asian and Pacific cultures live in diaspora on Turtle Island (North America), finding cultural touch stones can be valuable. There are various Asian and Pacific events that take place throughout the year and health services for the community. The location also has artifacts from around the world. The employees are very helpful and professional as well. When we visited to make Chinese dumplings, we were expected to jump in and help and it really felt like being around family. Of course we also got to taste them afterwards. My friend and I also sent our kids here for their summer youth camps which initially felt frustrating because the location was not very forthcoming with information, especially since parents were not allowed to stay and we had very young children. However, having experienced this, we'd confidently allow our children to participate again. They had lots of fun and learned a lot about many cultures. The location has helpful teachers and kept the location secured throughout the day. Parents had to stand in line to pick up their children for security purposes, which we appreciated. In the future, I would have preferred to help out, even if just to contribute to a specific cultural day. The location itself feels "sketchy" because it's in Tacoma, near a casino and has a few homeless people wandering around nearby because there's a community park next to it. But personally I had to let go of my stigma towards this community because of the helpful services here, including a food bank distribution group that uses the parking lot.

My wife and I attended a comedy show there on Saturday night March the 14th 2015. There's a three step process to get in the door. First they check your ID and strap a bracelet on your wrist. Next, if you're a woman, feel free to pack whatever weapons you want in your purse or on your person because they'll just let you waltz right in. If you're male however, be prepared to get frisked. After your initial screening, you can enter and present your tickets and check your coat if you choose at this classy establishment. Then you'll enter a giant cold empty space with a large bar with a very limited selection. This place has absolutely no beers on tap and the selection of bottled beers is terrible. They charge $9.00 for well drinks and they have one waitress who has no idea what she's doing. We'd been busy all day and hadn't had the opportunity to eat dinner so we decided to order food at the venue. The menu has about 7 items on it. I ordered a burger with fries and my wife got a hummus plate. When the food came to our table, there were no utensils, no napkins, no condiments. There wasn't even salt and pepper. I can't say anything nice about the food either. After the comedy show that was severely rushed was over, the entire audience had the option of either leaving or going to an upstairs loft area so that they could make room for their next event. This place is unfriendly, overpriced and generally unwelcoming to it's patrons.

To help soften the blow, they have lowered admission price in the interim. The hot shop is also still open and you can watch live glass making there. There are a few exhibit cases on view. There are lots of fun works that kids' designed that are also on view on the main lobby and down the hall. We went for a glass making class, which was tons of fun. I'm sure attendance varies widely - ours was not crowded. The person monitoring the class, Audrey, was friendly; she explains everything and then you have at it. She is there to help, which includes cutting glass pieces to suit whatever design you are making (this probably depends on the style of glass you are making). FYI the gift shop is really nice and is available even if you don't go into the museum. You can purchase works by glass artists who have been at the museum - so it's more than your average gift shop.

Water play area is definitely the most high activity zone. My kid almost spent an hour playing in that area. The air flow duct with scarves is another fun area for the kid. Among all the other museums I have visited, the painting, arts & crafts area is quite unique to this museum. The wooden boards and the net at the end of the museum is another adventure for all kids and not available in other museums. This was the first time I saw my kid feeling the courage to climb over the ropes and explore. The paid parking area near the museum has good number of spots but the signs can be confusing as it says "only reserved" and you tend to wonder if you will get ticketed. We came to see Filipiñiana, and from the moment we walked in, the experience felt welcoming. We were greeted right away when we entered, and the staff continued to be friendly throughout our visit. Even when we stopped for popcorn, the service was warm and personable. And speaking of the popcorn... it was honestly some of the best movie theater popcorn I've had! Before entering the auditorium, another staff member greeted us and pointed us in the right direction, which was a nice touch. The theater itself has the traditional upright seats you'd expect from an older cinema rather than the large recliners found in newer theaters. I actually found them quite comfortable, and they fit the intimate, classic feel of the theater perfectly. Overall, I really enjoyed my first experience at The Grand Cinema. I love that it offers an opportunity to see independent and less mainstream films in such a welcoming environment. It's so cool seeing the designs of cars across decades and manufacturers, and how that defined the soul of not just a subset of people at the time but culture (mostly American culture). Bummed they don't still make this! Would be perfect around lake Washington! Is recommend this museum to anyone, young or old, male to female. It's a welcoming space that lets you enjoy at your own pace and has never seemed too busy when I've gone. The people there are friendly and the Justin itself hosts lots of fun events both for the community and members. There used to be a cafeteria up top overlooking the special exhibit but I believe this is now upgraded as a Korean fast casual place. I didn't get to try it last time but wouldn't mind trying it out next time I'm wandering the museum. The gift shop has a fun selection of items too. David Lynch the Pacific Northwest... especially Washington State has a real attachment to David Lynch mainly because of the TV show Twin Peaks. This show wasn't to just honor his work with that show but for all of his films like Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet, Eraserhead and more. There was a jazz band that started out followed by dancer, a atmospheric electro music performer and more each with their own musical styles. The presentation concluded with a singer who sang Julee Cruise's "Falling" the song that is the intro song to Twin Peaks (although it's instrumental). They had mixed drinks named Agent Cooper and you could even get a slice of cherry pie with damned good coffee!
