I did manage to get there on Saturday just as they opened for dinner. El Gran Sabor is located in a converted vintage home; there is a small bar area and a medium sized dining room. The decor is comfortable and homey. Service was good and the menu pulls from both Mexican and Venezuelan cuisine which sounded like a great idea after a hard day of skiing. I ended up ordering the Shrimp Cachapa since I had not had this item before. This is a corn pancake topped with shrimp, vegies and cheese sided with rice and beans. A very tasty dish and just the kind of balanced meal to have after a day of exercising; also an item I have not seen on other menus before so I always like to try new things. I also really enjoyed the cup of spicy shrimp soup that came with the meal, rich shrimp flavor with a nice hit of spice warmed me to the core and got the meal off to a great start. I would strongly recommend El Gran Sabor if you are looking for a meal in Elkins, this was far and away the best meal I had during my visit and I would head back if I were in the area again. OK, then why three stars? I'm don't want to disparage this place but the consistent problem I encountered during three visits spread out over a year (most recently January 2025) is that they appear to enormously understaffed for both the size of the restaurant and breadth of the menu. On all three visits, food and drink orders took a long time to arrive. During the most recent visit with a party of four, two meals (same sandwich) arrived, followed by the third meal about 5 minutes later, and the last meal about 5 minutes after the third. Sigh. The staff members were uniformly nice, just seemingly overwhelmed. I will most likely will return in my next visit to Elkins, but as a party if one at the bar to see if there's a service difference.
