At this beer bar they specialize in Mexican beers. If it ain't a Mexican brew, it won't be sold here. Which I enjoy quite a lot, because it gives you the opportunity to explore the many different beers that are brewed in this country. At Calacas they have some of the better-known brands like Tempus, but the majority of their selection is a more obscure variety of lesser-known beer brands, like La Riata, Border Psycho and El Portal.
Make sure to check their Facebook page, cause there they publish the promotions they have for that particular night. For example, Wednesdays are always profitable for those arriving by bicycle: 15 percent off of all beers and there's a handyman who'll fix you're bike for free if needed. Fridays are often 'dark beer Friday', with 15 percent off of all porters and stouts. The offers vary on a weekly basis (although the 'bicycle discount' on Wednesday is a weekly reoccurrence).
I like this place because of the relaxed atmosphere. The owners are very nice and always up for a chat. Furthermore, they really know their beers. Some nights it'll be pretty quiet and other nights it's packed, leaving people to drink on the sidewalk. Which leads me to the only downside of this place: it's small. Which is fine, but it being so small results in very few seats and no space to prepare food (they have special nights when someone comes in to prepare food, but normally they do not offer any snacks). But those are minor details that are totally insignificant to those that like good beer at an affordable price in a friendly environment (spoiler: I'm one of those people!). read more
