A framed copy of a magazine article about the restaurant.

I had already tasted some of this restaurant's food at a business meeting in which they had it bought it to go in serving trays, but this was going to be the first day I visited the restaurant, took a look at the menu, and would have a total dining experience in its physical location and atmosphere. A friend of mine just happened to invite me to go try this restaurant out. It is located in a strp mall in Salem, Virginia, with plenty of parking spaces in the mall's parking lot. In front of the restaurant, there are stairs as well as a cement ramp to make the entrance easily accessible to the older population and wheelchairs. Its bright red business sign is found over the brick building, and a bright blue canopy under the sign announces FREE DELIVERY. When one enters the front door, around the foyer, one encounters a multitude of frame certificates of Dining Awards from the Roanoker Magazine and other places as well as framed articles about the restaurant and its owners. One can see the pride that they have for this restaurant. When one enters, the bar is on the left, also surrounded by framed awards and photographs of the owners. It was very clean and simply decorated with a nice carpet, blue ceiling, and bright red round chandeliers. The seating arrangement was blue and light color wood booths all over the restaurant. We were quickly greeted and taken to our booth as soon as we arrived by a native host and given a copy of the menu. Then, after a short time, a native server greeted us with a big smile and took our order. I thanked her in Chinese, and she smiled back, indicating that she understood the language. We ordered the Crab Rangoon as an appetizer and the Happy Family main dish from the Chef's Suggestion part of the menu. The food was plentiful, included fried rice, and very well presented. The chicken and beef pieces were very thinly cut, but the shrimp and scallops were nice and plumpy. And the whole dish could have used more seasoning because it was a bit bland, even though they had a bowl with soy and duck sause on the table. Many customers of all ages arrived while we were there, and as we were leaving, an older group of individuals were just arriving, so this seemed to be a very popular place. Who seemed to be the manager greeted me with a smile when I went to use the restroom, and I thanked him for such a well organized restaurant and wonderful food and service. I highly recommend this restaurant to all and look forward to returning soon.

Yes! This restaurant has great food, bright atmosphere, and affordable prices. I'm not normally a fan of Chinese restaurants in strip malls, but I'm glad we took a chance on this one because it was excellent! It was very clean with friendly service. As you walk in you see lots of awards they've won and calendars from over the years. This photo is just the starter soup and it was delicious! Everything else was just as fresh and appetizing, but we were hungry and ate it before I remembered to take more photos. Anyway, we were just passing through town, so we've only eaten here once, but we'll definitely go back if we're in the area again.

    Crab Rangoon (8) -

The food was bad. The Rangoon's were like jelly and very oily. The sea food was extremely bad, extremely bland. It said that it was fried in the description with king crab meat- they used imitation crab and it was steamed. The plate came out in a bowl with a lot of water and she dumped it onto the sizzling plate in front of us. I tried a little bit of everything on it and spit most of it out. They seated us in the corner and the server didn't come see us too often. The service could have been better.

Hands down the best Sunday oriental buffet in the area!! Got there and the place as busy but we were seated quickly and our server got our drink orders. From there own we were on our own. Our drinks were never dry and any requests we made of our server, she fulfilled within moments. The food on the bar was hot and fresh unlike most of the rest of the buffets in town.

    Lunch Beef and Broccli special

We very much loved our lunch special. I've added pictures for you to see. Food presentation was beautiful and everything was delicious. The cost for three lunch spiteful meals and 1 bowl of Sweet and Sour soup was less than $30. The dining atmosphere was very pleasant. I will definitely come back her next time I'm in town. But not only was…read moreit a great disappointment, it is absolutely one of the worst, if not the worst Chinese food restaurant that I have ever dined at. If you can call it that, because I immediately left the place after having one bite of their disgusting food. When I arrived it was early evening, yet due to the change of time it was already getting dark. There was one person in front of me making a Take Out order. When he was finished ordering the young lady behind the counter just looked at me saying "Can I take your order." I was not ready yet, but in a while, she repeated the same thing, sort of rushing me for no reason at all because there was no one else behind me to order. I finally ordered Chicken on the stick with Pork Fried Rice and an Egg Roll to eat and a Strawberry Boba Tea to drink. When she went in the kitchen to put the order I took a photo of the counter with the menu on the wall above, and as I did that another employee came out and ask me not to take any photos of them. I think he said this to avoid me capturing the what looked like a dirty kitchen. So I agreed and erased them from the only photo I had taken that hardly showed the cooks cooking in the kitchen. After waiting for some time, the young lady who took my order arrived with my food on a plate. It looked appalling; like if the Chicken on the stick had been fried in dirty oil and at the same time burnt. I don't know how the lady had the courage to bring me this food. I invite you to view the photographs accompanying this review to get a better sense of the place and the poor quality of the food. I took a bite of the Chicken on the stick and it was repulsive. Hard and tasteless. And when I took a look inside all the crunchy burnt batter that surrounded it, it was nauseating. The Egg Roll was somewhat better, but tasteless. And the Pork Fried Rice hardly had any pork and was reheated but hardly hot. I went on and tried drinking my Strawberry Boba Tea, but I just couldn't. At that moment I gave up on the food and the drink. This had been a nauseating dining experience. My only hope was the fortune cookie. I slowly opened its wrap and read what the tiny slip of paper had to say: "Success and prosperity are coming your way." I took a close-up photograph of this and quickly walked away from the restaurant with the deceiving name. The only good thing was the fortune, even the cookie I just couldn't eat after this horrible dining experience.

The food was very fresh, tasty and cooked well. The servings were generous! The prices were good.read more

Its name takes you directly to the kitchen item most commonly used for stir-frying Chinese food…read more But unconsciously what you think about when you hear this name is the exquisite Chinese cuisine that's found inside. After being awarded the Triad Yelper of the Year 2024 Award at the Yelpies Award Ceremony last year, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to uncover those found in hidden paths that for one reason or another have not reached the public in its totality. And China Wok Restaurant in Roanoke, Virginia, is the perfect example. The Wok is a large, bowl-shaped Chinese cooking pan with deep sides, traditionally used for stir-frying, and invented in China over 2,000 years ago. Its origin possibly dates back to the Han dynasty. Yet by using its name as part of this Restaurant's name, it seems to remind us of the flavorful food that is the Chinese cuisine. And this small and unassuming, family-owned restaurant focuses in it's totality in delivering quality food, cooked right. And this is precisely what they deliver. I arrived at the restaurant and the outdoor parking lot sign read: "CHINA WOK RESTAURANT / CHINESE FOOD / DINE-IN CARRY OUT / 362-2266. Although the majority of its sales are Carry Out, and this is why their phone number is listed in large print on the sign, they still have a small dining area with comfortable booths where customers can come and dine in if they prefer. And in that area they even offer self-service complementary Chinese tea. They lack space due to the large demand, so this dining area is shared as a storage area as well. But everything is clean so you don't seem to mind eating in a room that is also full of boxes. As soon as I walked in, a young Chinese lady was taking the take-out order of another customer who had arrived before me. I took the opportunity to take one of their menus which was on one side of a poster size sheet of paper, and were laying on the counter. It had such a great variety of dishes, specials, and combinations plates, that I was a little lost. But when it was my turn to approach the counter, the young lady who spoke perfect English greeted me with a friendly smile and gave me a warm welcome. She even helped me find a dish when I told her that I would like something with Roast Pork. I ordered the Roast Pork with Broccoli. It came with Pork Fried Rice and an Egg Roll. And they even included a Fortune Cookie. That's when she told me about the complimentary tea in the dining room. The young lady who took my order delivered it in person at my booth and even brought me a cup of tea with a container of sugar so that I could sweeten it. The food was amazingly delicious. I invite you to see for yourself in my photographs accompanying this review. The roast pork was so juicy and tasty, the broccoli so fresh and crispy, the egg roll not greasy at all, and the rice cooked to perfection. In conclusion, I highly recommend this Chinese Restaurant, after experiencing first hand the reason for its popularity. Their great hospitality, joined in with their amazing food, to make it an extraordinary dining experience.

I went to this restaurant because of one review that said: Best Chinese Food in Roanoke and many other good reviews from reviewers with no photos of themselves and with very few reviews done. And wow was I disappointed. First of all the location of the restaurant is not in a nice area. But that is no problem because sometimes you can find restaurants with great food in not so nice areas. The interior of the restaurant looked presentable with booths with table cloths and a mini Chinese Market next to the cashier counter. The menu looked fantastic, even with Hibachi. The lady who greeted me and took my order was very nice and friendly. The food was served in real plates with real silverware not plastic ones, and was brought to my booth by the lady who took my order at the counter. The place was clean. I ordered the Four Triple Combination, which had shrimps, scallops, beef and chicken. And came with Fried Rice. The dish looked very good when it came out. In fact too good to be true. When I started eating it I first noticed that the sauce was not cooked well enough with the food items, the chicken was tasteless, the beef was tough, the shrimps and scallops were better but very few, and the broccoli were frozen broccoli and many were still cold in the dish. Then when I went to taste the Fried Rice that looked so good, it had a horrible taste. Like if the wok where they cooked it had been washed with dish soap but not rinsed well enough. That really got me. I stopped eating and left the restaurant. It was the worst Chinese Restaurant that I have ever eaten at. What a bad sensation. I hope you learned something from this review like I have, and though I don't like to write bad reviews, I feel obligated to do so because I don't want any others to go through the horrible dining experience that I went through at this restaurant.

This Asian fusion restaurant in the Cave Spring area of Roanoke, is definitely one of my favorite restaurants of all times. And my first visit and review is something that I will always hold very dear. When you finish reading this review I invite you to go back and read that review and view my photographs accompanying that review, for it was a very unique dining experience that I will never forget. From the time you arrive at this restaurant the contemporary building design seems to beckon you to approach and enter. I love their unique logo design made up of letters and a number of a particular font that communicates a certain air of distinction. Once inside, you're like in another world altogether. If the outside of the building was impressive, the interior immediately captures your attention and mesmerizes you with it's beauty. When I arrived today, a very lovely and distinguished lady, dressed very elegantly, welcomed me and led me to the table of my choice. Later did I find out that she was the owner of the restaurant, and I had an opportunity of talking with her about the restaurant, its Sushi Bar, and Sushi chefs. Soon after, my friendly server, who was from Indonesia, came to introduce himself and take my order. To drink I had a Vietnamese Iced Coffee. It was served in a tall glass and tasted marvelous. As appetizer, I had the Dim Sum Platter. It contained 3 shrimp dŕhumai, 3 pork dumplings, 3 pork wasabi shumai, and 2 roasted pork buns. One of those items was extremely spicy, I had to drink water to cool down. The others tasted reasonably good. As my main entrée I had the Lobster Tail Tempura Maki. It was very colorful and tasted, and completely filled me up. My original server did an excellent job serving me the food and coming by to check on me. But then he disappeared and another server, also Indonesian came to bring me my main entrée. I think it might have been a shift change, but feel the first server should have let me know about this fact. But if the first server wad excellent, the second was amazing. He answered all the questions I had about items on the menu, and while delivering special dishes to other customers, he allowed me to photograph this food for the benefit of the readers of this review. Then, at the end, he helped me choose the dessert to have for the Grand Finale of my meal: the Banana Basket. It was amazingly delicious and had slices of bananas, kiwi, mangos, whipped cream, and strawberries. And topped with caramel and chocolate sauces. Considering its friendly and relaxing ambiance, its extensive menu with a wide range of Asian dishes, from traditional Chinese entries to a full sushi bar with raw and cooked options, and its amazing customer service, I definitely highly recommend this restaurant from my own experience. Every time I've dined there I've had an exceptional fine dining experience, and as I'm leaving I'm already looking forward to returning.

Looking for a…read moreplace to eat after an upset with 419 West Restaurant for not having enough parking spaces to accommodate their booked customers, after canceling the reservation that I made through Open Table, I drove off to a tiny strip mall next door, and there I found this place called Szechuan Chinese Restaurant. After being awarded the NC Triad Yelp Squad Yelper of the Year 2024 Award at the Yelpies Award Ceremony last year, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, celebrating their contributions and accomplishments throughout the year, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and businesses, and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to uncover those found in hidden paths that for one reason or another have not reached the public in its totality. And Szechuan Restaurant in South Roanoke, Virginia, is a perfect example. As I was walking towards the restaurant after parking my car, since I hadn't had an opportunity to research it to find out if it was good, I asked one of their customers who was also headed that way and he replied: "After more than 40 years of being their customer, I haven't found a place with better Chinese food." What an outstanding live testimony to the place, I thought to myself. Then as I got closer, Their windows were displaying framed articles about the restaurant. Inside, the owner was seated at his open office located in front of the restaurant, and the walls around him were inundated with framed awards and photos related to the restaurant. The owner, very friendly and hospitable, greeted me, and explained how since Covid they no longer had table service. But you would look at the menu, order and pay there, and then the food would be taken to your table in take out containers by a young lady server. As I went through their beautiful and extensive menu, he was able to notice that I was not too familiar with many of the items on the menu, so he helped me by asking me some questions of my likes and providing some recommendations. I ended up ordering a Coke to drink. A Vegetable Spring Roll as appetizer, as well as a Scallop Roll from the Sushi Bar. And as my main entrée I ordered the Pork Szechuan Style with their Fried Rice. And for dessert they had only three options Cheesecake, Chocolate Cheesecake, or Donuts. I went for the Chinese Donuts because I always wanted to try them. After ordering and paying with my credit card, I went to their dining room to look for a table to sit at. I picked a booth next to a window to provide enough natural light to be able to photograph the food nicely. The server brought me a plastic bottle of coke with a styrofoam cup with ice. The dining room was very nice and had the most beautiful and elegant fish tank that I've ever seen in a restaurant. It's a pity that they hadn't return back to regular table service since Covid is now under control. While waiting for my food to be prepared, I walked over to the Sushi counter to watch the Sushi Chef prepare my Scallop Roll. I invite you to view my photographs and videos accompanying this review to get a better sense of the place and the quality of their food. Finally, the friendly young lady brought my food to my table on a tray which she placed on the table. Both her followed-up to see how I found the food and to see ifvI needed anything else. What can I say, the food was amazing! From the Sushi to the Pork in the Szechuan sauce, to the Spring Roll, and Fried Rice. By the time I ate the donuts they had cooled down and hardened and were a bit dry inside. While I was enjoying my meal, several customers stopped by to pick up their To Go orders that they had ordered by phone or through their website. Others came with the intention of eating in but when they found out the situation, they ordered for Take Out instead. And a family who came to eat in, left when they found out the dining situation. The dining experience is not the same eating out of plastic containers. It's like drinking wine out of a plastic cup is not the same as drinking it out of a Baccarat wine glass. I highly recommend that the owner return back to the normal way of operating a restaurant. The inside of the restaurant is much too beautiful and the food much too exquisite not to do so.

And this love is reflected in their delicious food and in their togetherness as a couple and as a family. After being awarded the Triad Yelper of the Year 2024 Award at the Yelpies Award Ceremony last year, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, I decided that it would be appropriate this year to go back to this restaurant and write a follow-up review, since my initial review was one of my reviews that contributed to me obtaining this highly esteemed Award. Wok N Roll Kitchen as we know it today is located at 120 Campbell Avenue, a prime location in downtown Roanoke. It was conceived and founded in 2016 by Mario and Celi, who met online, fell in love, moved to Roanoke, married, and with their years of experience in the restaurant business, decided to establish this restaurant serving a mix of Asian cuisine with a home-cooked, family-style approach, aiming for warmth and flavor in their fresh, made-to-order dishes. The Restaurant first opened in the Crafteria on Church Avenue, and then in 2020 moved to its current location. I first learned of Wok N Roll Kitchen through a good friend of mine. I went to visit him one day and he had just arrived home with a takeout order from this restaurant and shared it with me while he talked about how much he loved this food. It seems like today and always, word of mouth has been and always will be the best form of advertising. Today when I visited the restaurant, I realized that the person taking the orders and serving the food was the co-owner of this family-owned business, together with his wife. He had a wonderful personality and made you feel at home while he took your order and served your food. He talked highly of his wife and I could feel the chemistry between the two that had been the key to the success of this small business I enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant. It was very clean, with framed inspirational sayings on the wall, and many Assian items decorating the place, starting from the Lucky Cat to other very interesting items. I invite you to view my photographs and video clips.to get a better sense of the restaurant's decor. To start with, I ordered a Mango Smoothie with Boba, remembering that this had been the place where I had Boba for the very first time. As appetizer I ordered the Pork Fried Dumplings and for the main course, the Combo Lo Mein with chicken, beef and shrimp. Everything was so fresh and tasty. I liked the quality of the meats and vegetables in their food. The beef was tender, the shrimp was plumpy and the chicken was very tasty. And those skinny noodles tasted so good. And the amount of food was amazingly plentiful. I was even able to take part of my food home. As I was eating, several customers came by to pickup their To Go orders that they had probably made over the phone. One of their customers wearing a Virginia Tech t-shirt, had such a large order I don't know how he was able to carry it all. Another thing that was interesting was their Hours of Operation. Many of the restaurants around the area were closed on Mondays, I guess because it's considered the slowest day of the week for restaurants. Yet they were open. And they were closed on Sundays. Their reverence in God and love of family is reflected in the hours of operation of the restaurant. In conclusion, I highly recommend this Asian family-owned restaurant to everyone in the area, whether they are locals or just visiting. It is one of those rare places that you feel good about inside that they exist.
