The staff at LaPosada are exceptional! Kind, Welcoming, Helpful and knowledgeable. The services, activities, meals and quality of living is tremendous. My mother absolutely loves her apartment and she loves living there! She has made friends quickly and always has a friend (or new friend) to have dinner with each night. And we have joined her for dinner several times and the food is upscale and delicious! We especially like the cocktail hour each night in their bar area. I love that there are two restaurants to choose from and there are new specials every night. There are also plenty of fun, interesting shows, activities and exercise classes for her to participate in. She enjoys regular transportation to Publix, the mall, or a doctors appointment. In addition, the grounds and community center are so beautiful and peaceful. A special shout out to many of the wonderful staff members: First our initial contact Lonnie Ehmann who shared her time and talent and layed the foundation for our initial visits. Fabulous Kim Mancini, Yolanda, and Vivianna all made my mom's transition seamless and comfortable. Stephanie, Jennifer and all the wait staff at the Waterfront dining are so gracious and outstanding! The list goes on and on - I really can't say enough about all the staff at La Posada!! There is incredible comfort and peace-of-mind knowing that she is well cared for and that there are systems in place to check on her well being. We had a very poor and expensive experience in Memory Care at the Atria Park at St. Joseph's…read more If your loved one had any negative behaviors associated with dementia/Alzheimer's. Our 85 year old, 93lb., insulin dependent mother who suffers from mid-stage Alzheimer's unknowingly had a UTI when we placed her here and became confused and agitated. She hit one of the workers twice. We knew this was out of character for her so we sent her to the hospital where she was admitted for IV antibiotics. We were told that we needed 1:1 care which was provided by an agency they recommended. We then placed her on anti-psychotic meds to hopefully stop episodes of agitation. She was given 3 different medications which resulted in low BP and pulse, lethargy which resulted in syncopal episodes. I was not informed of the 1st incident. The second incident happened while I was there. When we asked the workers for the nurse, we were told that he was on the Assisted Living side and the didn't know how to reach him as he didn't answer the walkie-talkie. There were several times where a nurse was unavailable as they were on the AL side. Towards the end of the month, the nursing director stated that we would start tapering the 1:1 care and transition her to their care as there were no further episodes of hitting. Unfortunately, she developed a second UTI and again became agitated and confused. It was reported to me that she hit someone again and we were then told that due to her frequent UTI's secondary to her anatomy and her colitis, we would need to provide 1:1 care indefinitely 3 days prior to the end of the month. It cost us $16,000.00 for the one month in 1:1 care coupled with the $6,500.00/month for their fees. Of course, they know that no one can afford such exorbitant costs on a sustained basis. The man in the next room has been yelling and screaming out frequently and his wife had to find a new place for him. Most of the food was less than appetizing. When they served fish which my mother does not eat, they offered her such foods as hot dogs despite having discussed her dietary needs at our intake interview. This happened frequently. The facility is quite dated with small rooms. The A/C units are antiquated wall units which are loud and kick on and off all day and night. They supposedly fixed this issue when I complained, however, it was not rectified which frequently woke my mother at night. The patio was full of leaves and unkept. The hallways smell of urine and feces. My advice if you are considering a place for your loved one is to avoid Atria Park at St. Joseph's, although they advertise being a Memory Care for Dementia/Alzheimer's patients, if your loved exhibits or develops any of the normal/frequently seen adverse/negative behaviors, look elsewhere.

Over the past year, my father's physical and mental (dementia) declined fairly precipitously. My…read moresister and I lived far from Vero and we were concerned about our father having no family in the area, yet needing care (and caring). We were blessed to then have Caron D'Ambruso (of Active Home Health) enter our lives. Initially is started with Caron helping clean and dress my father's skin cancer wounds which he had not been properly tending to. Not only Caron provide care for his wounds, she demonstrated a compassion and a caring for him as a person, something he desperately needed in his poor physical and isolated condition. Despite my father's decline, he was highly intelligent and a former trail lawyer who could be a bit of a "curmudgeon" and not easily trust people. Caron's loving and caring style, combined with her high intellect (she is a Harvard graduate), quickly earned her a special place in my father's life. He respected her greatly and lit up when she would visit to care for him. She wasn't just providing care for his physical wounds, but also his emotional ones. And that is because she actually cares for the people she is treating. Knowing that his two daughters lived in other states and cities, Caron provided us with updates and shared insights about his condition and care that he needed. This was instrumental in our knowing what additional resources and doctors he needed. On the morning I flew down to see my father and take him to a new neurologist for memory issues, my father collapsed in his apartment with a stroke. After landing, I called him on my drive to Vero Beach and he did not answer the phone. I called Caron and expressed my concern, and asked her to let me know if she saw my father in the common areas of the facility. I was about an hour away in the car and was anxious. Caron took it upon herself to go to his apartment. When she knocked, she could hear his small dog barking, but no one answered. Caron sought security who helped her enter his apartment and they found him on the floor in dried blood and urine. Caron immediately tended to him and called for an ambulance via 911. The paramedics arrived and Caron called me to let me know what had happened. I re-routed my rental car to the hospital. My Dad had to be in the hospital and then a rehab facility for over three weeks. During this treatment period, Caron visited my Dad on her personal time in both the hospital and rehab facility. She helped bring changes of clothing and other items he needed. Given my father's stroke and his lack of proximity to family, my sister and I decided that we needed to move him back to his hometown of Fort Lauderdale once he was released. This would get him closer to family and friends which he clearly needed. The saddest part of this decision was that Dad would lose his nurse and caring friend, Caron. It was a big loss indeed. Needless to say, Caron was a Godsend to my father and family. She continues to occasionally check in to see how he is recovering. We miss Caron and hope that others who are in the Vero Beach area are fortunate to have her care, and the other great caretakers at Home Health Care.

The owner of the company sent me an email stating that she supported the RN's decision to file a false report and didn't see anything illegal about it.

I still remember the angst my wife and I felt when it was time to go back to work and we needed to hire a nanny. Who's going to love and take care of my child as I would. This is what we all felt going through search for the right people and we knew as soon as we met Marina we'd found the right place. Even though she was going on a big trip the very next day, she come over and sat with my mom and I. She wanted to get to know my mom, and learn what was happening with her health. She wanted make sure she had the right person on her team, who had the necessary tools to assist my mom where she needed it, but also give her the space she desired when she wanted it. Marina's team understands the word dignity. And they understand empathy. They realize that many times when they are called this may be the first time someone may have the need to have home care. The search for the right team is hard work. But Marina's team also understands the stress, fear, perhaps even anger felt by the person who needs assistance. This is a loss of freedom and control that for some, can be very difficult. It can bring emotions to light that are unexpected. The experience Marina's team brings in situations such as these reminds you that you have hired not only someone who can be there when your mom is hungry and can make her a home cooked meal, but a professional who has been there before and can help to ease those situations where there's someone who may be scared or perhaps dealing with a sense of a loss of control. Whoever does the intake will get ALL the details! What they like to eat what they don't. When they like to rest and when they are most active. What's the med schedule? Is there an exercise program? Are there therapists coming in for PT, or Occupational therapy. Once ALL of the details are understood a schedule is made and before you know it, you and your loved one will be meeting your new new caregiver. My mom was with a wonderful woman who ultimately became her right hand. She was an absolute professional who charmed my mom as well as my sisters and I. We felt lucky to have her in all of our lives. We could be with my mom whenever we wanted. There was no feeling of awkwardness or anything like that. And the amazing part, was when it was time to leave, we didn't have to worry. We new our mom was in the best possible position with that someone who we knew truly cared about our mom and her well-being. You know you've been in that spot when no one answers and the panic starts immediately?? And if we had any questions or concerns we could give my mom's caregiver a call and she'd be there to answer the phone. That alone...I know you get it. As a post script I'll also include a brief note concerning our insurance coverage. Assisting Hands did a great job of making this part easy for us. For the majority of the time they were with my mom the insurance company was fair and provided the coverage that my mom needed. However there was a very unexpected change that occurred in coverage at one point. The kind of change that makes most of us hate insurance companies....The details are unnecessary, but I want you to know that Marina and her team were staunch supporters of ours throughout the struggles we had with the carrier and we were reminded once again of the true partnership we knew we had with Assisting Hands.

VIP care management was able to handle all that was required to get the Medicaid application process as painless as possible. They provided ample information as to what they needed, and I simply scanned and emailed everything to them and before I knew it, my Mom got accepted by Medicaid. They even referred me to an excellent edler care attorney that helped in the process of getting my mom eligible where I had thought it might not be possible.
