I really wanted to like this place (and find a great new dentist), but it just wasn't it. Let me preface this by saying that I've had everything under the sun done by dentists/orthodontists/periodontists, so I've been to many practices. I came in for a new patient consultation and cleaning, and was told I should come in every 3 months for cleaning for the first year, since it had been 12 months since my last cleaning (odd, I've never heard this before, and my teeth are generally very healthy). Regardless, I didn't think much of it. Two weeks after my initial cleaning, they scheduled two sessions of "deep cleaning". When I showed up for the first session, I was sat down, had gel put in my mouth, and when the dentist came in, proceeded to watch him inject my gums with a needle 4x on the right side. This was unexpected, as I had no idea anesthetic was part of the procedure -- in fact, nobody had explained the procedure at all to me other than "it's a deep cleaning of your teeth and gums." That struck me as odd, as I'm used to one of the staff sitting down to detail the procedure before they begin (especially if needles are involved). After the session, I went to pay and was charged $219 out-of-pocket, which was odd since the estimate was for $110. I asked the reason for the difference and was told it was the laser - also odd, as this was the first I'd heard of a laser, and no laser was used during the procedure. I was then told as I was about to leave (after paying) that they wanted to use a laser on me, but forgot. I asked what the laser was for, as this was the first I'd heard of a laser as part of the deep clean, and it wasn't included on the estimate. The dentist came out and told me that the laser was for promoting healing (which again was odd - why wasn't this administered during my treatment, and why was it assumed I wanted to pay for it)?I felt uncomfortable at this point, and should have just left, but went back to sit in the chair for the laser (since I already paid for it), then left. It's a bummer this place didn't work out. Just had a very thorough painless cleaning. My comfort always a priority.

First off, look at this list of reviews - they're obviously paying Yelp to manipulate their rating. Clearly. This is a one-star establishment. The obvious goal of this business is as you would imagine, revenue maximization. They will repeatedly try to sell you on additional cleaning appointments, their personal line of mouthwash, and worse yet, on services they know are not covered by your insurance. I found my self in a chair about to have a mouth guard molded when I started asking questions only to find that I was about to be billed for like $700 because Synergy, as they well knew, didn't except my Medical Insurance (Anthem). I got out of there just in time to avoid the excessive charge. More recently I changed Dental insurance. Before my cleaning appointment they called for an update so they knew exactly what insurance I had and they knew that they didn't accept my new carrier. You'd hope at that point they would tell you the cleaning wasn't going to be covered but instead they insisted on additional Ex-rays. The result is a $280 bill for services that had been covered via my insurance for 8 years as a customer of theirs. Revenue maximization at any cost. They knew I'd be leaving when I found out they didn't take my insurance so they tacked on additional services on the last visit. That is dirty. I hate shady practices like that and this place will use any trick they can use at your expense. An annoying side note, when you go in there you feel like you've taken your car to a car wash and they guy washing starts giving you crap about the gas you use and whether or not your have changed your air-filter. You're a dental technician - clean teeth. When a doctor is needed one will seek out an actual doctor, not a dentist selling soda pop and mouth wash in their lounge. read more

I have been a patient of theirs for quite some time now. I made the decision to change my life and health for the better. I needed a whole new smile and come to find out, also more bone added to my jaw due to an assault from years ago. I will leave gory details out. I chose Synergy because they had already done some minor work on me previously. And the staff has always been epically accommodating to me and my schedule. Also as a single father I've had to bring my little boy on multiple occasions. He enjoys diving into their toy box. I've never gotten even a sniff of annoyance by the staff. To put it quite simply, they have CHANGED MY LIFE! I am still in the process of my transformation which includes root canals, bone graphing, implants and veneers. I will be a lifetime customer! Now, per my recommendation, multiple friends also use them as their dentistry. Dr. Hubenette is the most patient, kind hearted medical professional I have ever encountered. And her staff, including Elizabeth, Kaylin and the rest of these amazing people show real dedication and genuine care for their patients. I have received multiple phone calls and messages through this process to check on me. Their inter-personal skills are bar-none to other medical offices (I've been to many). I adore this crew of professionals. They help alleviate the inevitable mental and physical pain in any way possible. If "Cheers" were about a dentistry instead of a bar...this would be the location. Their office is quite comfortable. They have sparkling water, massage chairs, coffee in what I would describe as a lounge more than a waiting room. Went here some time ago a couple times and had a great then horrible experience. I have extreme anxiety about dental work and voiced my concerns. They were very very helpful and gave me options. I was honestly impressed with their professionalism and consideration. I left feeling that their 5-Star reviews were justified and that I had made a great choice. They're definitely 'sales oriented'... and provided me with an appropriate (but very comprehensive and expensive) treatment plan. It was about the same pressure as a used car dealer, but a good one. It also cost as much as some used cars with all of the optional/suggested treatments. Over 20k out of pocket in total. I agreed. They checked me out while explaining what costs I would incur during the plan. That was great. They also explained I could 'take advantage of a great promotion they had' by paying them a significant potion of the plan up front. I agreed, but once again, it felt odd. I paid for the first visit (a few hundred) and the dental device (a few more hundred or so) and gave them my insurance card which would cover a very small amount (a few hundred at most). This is where odd went bad. I received a call from them. It started in a semi-accusatory tone telling me that I owed them because I gave them 'invalid' insurance information. I was taken back. I gave them the card... I explained to her that I was looking online and it was very valid. I read her the information and she said it was what I had said. I gave her more info about the policy. We realized that my policy from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Iowa needs looked up or something in another way. I then explained to her that this obviously wasn't my fault and that I did not appreciate their attitude towards the issue. She argued with me and told me it was my fault for not giving the correct information. I told her that she personally copied the card and did the filing off that and how could I have 'given her the wrong information'? Seriously? So I asked for the manager. She paused and then told me that would be fine. I waited for an extraordinary amount of time. Like crazy long. Then someone unbeknownst to me (as Management) basically told me that she had spoken with the employee (the long wait) and that she was sorry about the situation and I wouldn't need to pay obviously now that the insurance thing was resolved. Okay, great. I then requested that the employee (whom I would need to further interact with during the treatment plan and had treated me rudely and in an accusatory tone while being the one in the wrong)... Would need to apologize to me as a condition of my continued patronage. Even if just over the phone. I felt it was justified, especially from a customer service if not ethical standpoint. They said they would not do that. I asked if protecting rude employees from having to own up to their mistakes was worth losing 20k+ in billing and almost 7k up front (that 'deal') in the next week and they literally told me that I would need to do what I needed to do. Crazy when it's the right thing (IMO) to do and I was about to give them 20k (especially when 20k cash out of pocket looked like far above and beyond their average customer). I did so. They got zero more dollars and now they have this review. For being so about their money, they seemed more about being right and maintaining their inability to admit fault. That isn't a place I want to do business with. read more

Please look around and do research with your insurance company before you let them do any work. I was very impressed by their office but not so impressed by the pressure they put on you to do more services.... They make you sign that you are aware of the charges but when my insurance company paid it was way less because the pricing of Synergy is higher than what the insurance company will pay. The last straw was when I was told I had the start of gum disease and needed a very expensive cleaning... Beware! This is one of those (regretfully not so rare) professional operations where they push every service and product in the book on you before you can even think, needed or not. Synergy turned out to not be in my insurance network, but I found out this too late, just after my first visit when I was charged close to $400 just for an initial assessment and half a clean-up. I could have gotten that for free elsewhere, and I find it really unethical that I was not warned beforehand. Luckily I escaped without getting involved in further work (estimated at about $1,400!) which I was told was urgent and should be done like in two days; something that the next dentist I consulted considered totally unnecessary. Dr. Kimberly Hubenette of Synergy Dental Group is the best and most Compassionate dentist in town, hands down! Not only is she my dentist, but she is now my husband's dentist. Recently he had an emergency toothache on a holiday 3-day weekend and Dr. Hubenette was the only dentist in our town who could be reached and was willing to help him. In fact, she came into her office and got him out of pain very fast. I don't know of any other dentist that would have done this! I can't say enough good things about Dr. Hubenette and her practice! Oh by the way... Synergy Dental Group is the only dental practice within the Sonoma Valley open both on Fridays and most Saturdays. I have been going to Synergy since 2008. After having gum surgery before I moved up to Sonoma I was not having a good dental experience. The dentist I saw in San Francisco could have been from 1968 with dental hygiene and technology at best. Synergy Dental Group is amazing! They have the latest and greatest in regard to all things dental. The best part of my experience is Ann Martinez. She literally has taught me how to take care of my teeth and as someone who has had a past of gum disease and surgery etc., she has turned my mouth around. I no longer have deep pockets, I have healthy gums and most importantly she gives me great techniques on how to maintain healthy hygiene. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HER! Dr. Hubenette is great too and the whole staff makes me feel welcome and calm... At 50 years old, this is not something that I had never experienced before. Best dental experience ever! Every staff member was amazing.

Brought my daughter to this dentist, they had told me that they take my insurance. They cleaned and X-rayed her teeth, I waited in the waiting room, and a woman came out and sat down next to me and proceeded to tell me that she had 13 cavities and it was going to cost me $1300 to get them filled. I have never paid that much for feelings in the past anywhere else and was skeptical of the price she had quoted me. I went home and talk to my husband. He called them and found out that they actually only cover 60% with my insurance, which they neglected to tell me. I ended up going to a dentist that covered more with my insurance, my daughter had 9 cavities not 13, and I only paid $130. I never went back to this dentist again, but they called me a few months later and told me my daughter had an appointment, I told them we had found a new dentist. A few days later I received a bill in the mail from them for $1300, for work which was never done. I feel this dentist is trying to pray on and scam unaware people. I wish I could give them zero stars but I had to put one to write this review. read more

I figured it would be a good second opinion.... However, I found out that my Big Name dentist in SF hadn't caught some potential Big Problems in the xrays he'd previously taken. Great family oriented, friendly office. I'm not one that cares to go to the dentist, some bad childhood experiences I'll save for another time, but Dr. Hubenette made me feel completely at ease and comfortable with her relaxed atmosphere and her gentle hands.
