I like this place. It's a lovely 3-story mansion in KC, right around the corner from the Uptown and…read moreall that. Side note: This place boasts what is probably my favorite bathtub in town. What? Why is that weird? I know of at least 3 reading series that happen here on a regular basis, but they host other readings and workshops, too. Riverfront Reading Series is second Fridays at 8pm. Main Street Rag is third Sundays at 7pm. Monday Open Mic is fourth Mondays at 8pm. The downstairs is really open and bright. Lovely hardwood floors and there's often local art on the walls. I think it's the second floor that has a small bookstore with lots of local writers' work. There are also offices here for the Latino Writer's Collective. It's a really lovely space with some good events. My only caveat (and maybe I'm wrong because I live more than a hop/skip/jump away) is I think they could use some work on how well they advertise some of their events.

We came into the Tiffany Ballroom as we were attending a Murder Mystery Co dinner. The chef came…read moreout at the end of our evening to inform us that they rent out rooms for weddings and private parties--in no way would I ever consider this venue. She informed us all of the special hand laid marble flooring and the Tiffany windows, which were pretty, yes. The food, however, completely turned me off. I would not feel comfortable feeding what they fed us to my wedding or party attendants. We were given the option of a gluten free dinner, cheese tortellini, or the chicken Parmesan. My chicken Parmesan was in no shape to be server. The chicken's outer costing was mushy, and the meat tasted old and had many areas of fat, which weren't trimmed. The noodles were tri colored, and was very watery and over cooked. The sauce was extremely bland. The cheese tortellini was still cold in the middle, so it was obviously not fresh and frozen. In addition, they served a side of veggies, which was frozen peas and carrots. We paid $60 a person for this event, and anticipated that the food would be edible.. It definitely was not. For the marketing tactic that was made on us tonight, perhaps it would have been more beneficial to future patrons if we focused that time on the food prep instead.

What a lovely afternoon to see the finale of Color Purple…read more KC Repertory- Spencer Theatre located with UMKC campus is right on the edge of Cherry. Parking can fill up early and not too many handicapped spots so dropping of my mom at the door was next best thing. Once inside, so many smiling patrons around. We headed to the bar, to checkout drink and food offerings. The Color Purple color changing cups held drinks. We tried: Frozen Sangria, Frozen guava lemonade (NA) and Vieux Carré cocktail. All were delicious! Adrian and LaVera were helpful and patient bartenders. There were a few vendor tables to checkout, including a The Black Repertory Theatre of Kansas City promoting the upcoming productions. And for the most interactive fun, a tablet Photo Booth station, where the resulting picture had play brand border. There was an air of excitement, enthusiasm and friendly people all around. Our seats in the Terrace were very nice. Comfy seats, aisles with amble markers and space to pass as long as you stood up and the elevation of slopes for tiered seating was perfect, whereas we had a clear sight line to the stage. This made the acoustics and sound have a great quality and clarity. The entire cast was phenomenal. The well known story translated well onto stage. The drama, tragedy, triumphs, comedic timing was felt in every word, lyrics and various musical scores from entire company.

KC Rep is SO GOOD!! We have season tickets and love all of their shows!!…read more The company is very talented and every show is unique with a new cast and so many talented people involved in every product production from the people that build the sets to the costumes and make up people and those who run the lights and sound. This latest production of Emma, which was staged at UMKC was one of the funniest shows I've ever seen! My wife agreed. It was a very interesting adaptation of Emma from Jane Austen. They also perform shows at Copaken Theater in the H&R Block building. Both locations are wonderful and we've seen such incredible shows as Brokeology, and Lady Day to name a couple. If you can attend a KC Rep production, I highly recommend it. We love supporting this theater because for one show every season they take it on the road and perform it for free at several locations all around the metro. They believe theater is for everyone not just people of means. That makes me love this company even more.

My wife and I took a friend from out of town to see Trey Anastasio as he played with the Kansas City Symphony. He mentioned from the stage several times how impressed he was with the symphony and the pristine sound in the hall. The concert was fantastic as they played Trey's arrangements of his music. They did an excellent job, of course. We've heard them play everything from Handel's Messiah to Mahler's fifth Symphony, and a ton of music that is incredibly beautiful and very difficult. These scores were not super difficult, but they sure were entertaining. Our community is blessed to have such an incredibly talented Orchestra!

He has immense knowledge about his industry & equipment and has an impressive arsenal of processes in place so that his team is ready for anything. We had to postpone our first date due to weather, and Michael was in communication with us the whole time we were working to reschedule. We even had a hiccup with our planned site the night of our rescheduled event, and he and his team pivoted their entire set-up process like it was nothing. As a person in the events industry, I cannot say enough about their unwaveringly calm demeanor and creative problem solving. The night of the event, they arrived with plenty of time to set up the screen, sound system, lights, and popcorn machine. Everything was set up on time and looked organized. The screen was bright and displayed the picture beautifully, and the sound system was top notch. Michael and his team worked tirelessly to make our event seamless so that our staff could enjoy the event as well, and they thought of every little thing. I was thrilled to celebrate my birthday at the second annual Midwest Tea Festival in Kansas City!…read more I booked my admission in advance, which was a reasonable $12 per person and came with a goodie bag upon arrival with coupons, Tea Time magazine, tea samples, and a small tea cup for sampling. There were so many wonderful vendors present from all over the region, with an especially great local presence. I sampled many delicious teas and purchased some teas from different vendors. People were very willing to educate us as we visited booths despite the enormous crowds. I never got upstairs to see the Main and Specialty stages for open presentations as the lines were long, but Eric R. and I did participate in a free workshop on 19th century tea culture and Gunpowder Green tea. I was happy to see Harney & Sons, whose showroom we visited in NYC several years ago. We ended up buying 4 oz of Gyokuro from them ($10 off for the event). We also purchased pineapple upside cake black tea from Anna Teas (our way to transition Eric R. from solely drinking green tea to maybe black tea?), Long Island Strawberry from Queen's Tea, and Berry Genmaicha from Proust Teas. I also was excited that Bimi Bakery from Lawrence had a booth, where Ayako and Ray were selling her delicious Japanese sweets. I had pre-ordered from her and picked up my goodies at her booth, which included sake cake, green tea brownies, and sesame seed cookies with umeboshi. I happened to chat with the Adventures with Tea owners while standing around and mentioned it was my birthday. The emcee of this festival, Austin, snapped a group photo and even gave me a shout out in the microphone! There was also a Tea Rex mascot roaming around for photo opportunities, and funny TEA shirts being sold. This was an absolute blast and as I like to say, husbands who go with wives to tea festivals are Teariffic!
