We came here the beginning of the year desperate for help. My daughter was assessed with a 1.7 (out of 6) in reading skills. It was suggested from the school to be held back a year. I still wanted her to have a tutor while re taking the first grade. The director at sylvan sees we have this desperate need, but tells us she won't work with us unless we paid 12 weeks in advance. Not only did my daughter succeed without their assistance, she was reassessed with a 5.7 in literacy. You don't need this place to have brilliant children. She went three days a week, she loved it there, the staff is so friendly and I felt she was actually learning something. I swear all they want is your money, and LOTS of it! The tutors are always changing and all have different styles of teaching, which is definitely confusing for your child when he/she goes back to school. Oh and forget about the flat fee you pay (via loan by their lender when forced to sign a contract) before your child can begin being tutored. Once you've run out of the amount of tutoring hours you initially paid for, unbeknownst to you, they don't tell you you've run out of hours they just run a tab and to your shock and surprise they give you an additional (new) bill! This is our second tutoring place and third tutoring place we visited. Sylvan is quite expensive. In fact, they even have something similar to a student loan you can take out. However, they conduct an extensive 3 1/2 hour assessment and test the child very thoroughly. My daughter has attended 4 hours a week for the past 2 months and I have seen a great improvement in her reading. They do not hand her worksheets (like at tutor club and kumon) to do for the hour or take home and have extra homework. She actually has her own program and certain subjects they work on certain days. I am very happy that we sent her here. read more

I can not say enough about how effective the Sylvan program is. My ten-year-old son started Sylvan in California last summer and had amazing results in his math improvement. When we moved to Henderson I knew I wanted to continue with the program. I found this center and it has gone above and beyond surpassing my already high expectations. My first contact was with the director, Tina Herrera. She is AMAZING! Even though I was familiar with the program she gave me more insight and information that was really valuable. Ms. Herrera is very kind and easy to talk to. The days and times my son could come to the center were plentiful and varied. The program isn't cheap, but it WORKS and my son likes going. He is being tutored in reading and math. He goes three times a week and never complains when it's a Sylvan day. My son raised his math level an entire grade this summer and raised his reading a full grade and-a-half in less than two months here in Henderson Math homework is now easy for him on more concepts than ever before! My son loves all the teachers, especially one who will treat the kids with a magic trick when tutoring time is over! My son also adores Ms. Herrera. She always warmly welcomes each child when they arrive and always has a happy goodbye when they leave. From talking to other parents in the waiting room (which is always stocked with current magazines) everyone really likes Ms. Herrera and the effectiveness of the program. If your child is struggling, like mine was, look into this program. It's a game-changer for kids. read more

My son is in the reading program here and loves it. He has a ways to go, but they start at the basics and make sure he knows all the fundamentals before moving on to the next subject. I brought my daughter here as a last resort for me and it's the best decision I have ever made. My fourth grader has been struggling basically since kindergarten and I had tried everything to help her. I had worked with her school and it felt like I was hitting a brick wall trying to get their help. So finally after getting fed up with thinking that the school would do anything to help her I turned to Sylvan. Tina was amazing she explained everything there was nothing that wasn't discussed and no hidden surprises. My daughter has been going here since January and has basically jumped 2 grade levels to where she is almost currently. I have not only seen an improvement in her demeanor but also her confidence and her excitement for learning. I can't thank Tina and all the teachers at Sylvan enough, without them I don't think my daughter would be where she is at now.
